Nothing has been "given" to me. I've racked up alot of student debt. There are millions of things I cannot qualify for, but that has nothing to do with the point at hand. Hmmm. I've been working a long time and don't ever remember a job application asking me for race as a mandatory section to fill out? I am saying this as a woman also. I think alot of us forget times when if you worked on campus and were pregnant, you were fired. Is that fair? Isn't that discrimination? No merit there.
@mabmao. Wow a little bitter? I don't hear any whining except for yours. It is just a difference of opinion and experiences. Like I said it is what it is, nothing more. I have travelled the world and lived all over the US. Why does race matter? I wish it did not. I am quite tired of discrimination and people who think it is ok for the status quo to remain and let not anyone different prosper and climb up the ladder of success.
Why does race matter? What happened to merit? Education and jobs, amongst other things, should not given to somebody just to increase diversity. And I'm saying this as a woman. I don't want someone's job if I'm less qualified because they think hiring a woman will look good. The person who has the most qualifications and is best suited for the position, whether it be in school or work, should get it. They've earned it. I hate when applications ask for "race" on them--why should that matter?
As for the little debate going on about diversity & race at the University: I find the U of A plenty diverse. We have many students from different ethnicities and countries. And this is coming from someone who grew up all over the world. Racism works both ways (do you know how many scholarships I'm ineligible for because I'm not a minority? I've wracked up quite the debt in student loans, believe you me) & I find it sad that people chose diversity to focus on and whine about.
I worked there this past August (boy you some of you guys are presumptuous). I happen to know the engineering department really well. They do better as a whole than the rest of the university, but.........Muticuturalism and diversity are different subjects! The university is somewhat addressing this, but there is no way that they are ahead of the curve. They are not even ahead in the SEC! I am not complaining. It is what it is and it is up to the University if they want to change it.
For the people complaining about the race diversity. I can say that the teachers are of diverse races with in the engneering departments. I can also say that we have a higher percentage of international students than hispanic and blacks. The university is working on that but we are ahead of the nation compared with other areas for the percentage of minorites in college. I would also say that the offices that do employ blacks tend to have more blacks than whites. It is just the way people group.
What year did you work there? Because by your statement of "almost no" and "very little"...I can tell that it hasn't been recently. But we can agree to disagree. No problem.
You were a student there. I was staff there. I will stand by that statement. As far as staff and faculty...people of color are not well represented. I am not saying it is a bad place or there is this massive tension, but the fact that there is very little representation of people of color remains the same.
@lrobert9865 You are dead wrong about race. We have a pretty good balance of race at U of A that goes far and beyond just "blacks and whites" as well. I took a diversity training class when I was hired at U of A that I thought was very beneficial and we have a great diversity department here on campus.
@lrobert9865 I currently live in the town and currently attend the university as a student. There are a lot of races at the University. This year there are a lot of International students from South Korea. There is at least one South Korean professor at the school as well. I've met people from all over the world: I've met people from Mexico, France, Russia, South Korea, and Japan. You may have worked at the UofA in the past, but things change.
@blaz1tim Not sensitive, just don't think you can assess the race of a population of a university by a 9 minute video in an office.. perhaps you should visit their website, or the campus, and get a better perspective.
Why does this have to be a racial issue at all, its a funny video!
you should have just put an out of order sign on the elevators doors, down stairs and caution tape over them so they had to walk up the stairs if they did not figure it out.
or caution tape over the stair wells and an out of order sign on the elevators leaving them trying to figure out how they will get to the floor they are trying to reach

That's right, there is only 9 people, and they all work on the same floor. They had a green person, but turned out he was Gumby and he left.
