Ah! My favorite game of all times! Had it on Amiga 500, 1MB RAM 4 disk (quite bearable compared to 11 of LeChucks's Revenge). MI had amazing atmosphere and I replayed it several times. A while ago I bought Special Edition (once again I might sound foolishly nostalgic) didn't like it quite as I wanted to.
irrelivant question homing into base camp: Sorry but i just wanted to ask what monitor is that you have in the background to me atleast its SWEEET and was wondering its cost and name :P , as im going to be upgrading my computers hardware (mohterbord, ram processor) and im interested in some monitors.
Anyway, sorry about that; another great episode of mattchat, watched this one like 3 times now, gotta love monkey island!
That's such a great game, I love it. Great Video too. I actually remember reading at one point that some stuff in the Disney Pirate movies was taken from these games. I was always waiting for Depp to take a rubber chicken with a pulley out of his pocket or find one somewhere. lol
I never played this game when it was first released. A friend introduced it to me in the late 2000's and I instantly fell in love with it. I didn't beat it though, as I started playing other old games I never heard of. I recently bought the "Special Edition" on Steam, which gives the game some nicer graphics, not that I minded the old style. If you pre-order Monkey Island 2 "Special Edition," you get Monkey Island 1 "Special Edition" for free. There's no reason not to do this, its only 10$!
I used to love this game as a kid, i think the problem with games such as Beneath a steel sky was they left way to much of the play area open, leaving puzzles really hard to complete because of the endless possibilities of solutions, and sometimes making you back track ten screens at a time to complete them, i think Broken sword 2 is very overlooked, it pushes you forward leaving only a few screens open at one time making it easier to progress, the puzzles were also a lot more logical.
Totally dig the new intro. What happened to the glasses though? You should go back. Glasses are a better look for you. There are no words to say what Monkey Island was. Keep up the great videos, love the history and related games. How about another great LucasArts game - Loom! Maybe you've got access to the original non-talky, I'd like to see that again.
Love MI games and a massive adventure game fan in general. First played this back on 1991 I think on the Amiga. Of course back then there was no hint systems and didnt have the internet to get hints from so I remember having to figure all the puzzles out myself. Brings back many good memories!
Aye, thanks for watching. This was one of the few adventure games that I think that normal people could actually solve back then without having to look at hints. I only wish more adventure games were like it!
yep totally agree. Before Monkey Island I played alot of the Sierra games and even though I loved them some of the puzzles did have me pulling my hair out! I did actually finish them all though but got to admit that a few times I did have to wait for walkthroughs in computer mags to help me through difficult bits.
Wow I don't think I've seen this EGA version. I loved these games but I played MI2 first and then went back and played this one but I have the VGA version.
This is an awesome game. i bought the Special Edition off of Steam! It's soo funny! Although I am REALLY bad at adventure games, so I have to use the hint system ALOT! I'm grateful they put that system in the game.
The graphics in the VGA/Amiga version gives the game a slighty different feel, like the bit where you walk across the bridge/walkway to the scumm bar, the VGA/Amiga version of that section seems darker, making it feel like night time, instead of a sunset in the EGA version. It gives it a different, more appealing atmosphere for me, but its all good.
It's a shame youtube only allows 10 min. videos, but you do a great job making a well rounded review or look back. Rrrrrr...
Yes, I prefer the VGA/Amiga versions as well as the talkie versions. All good stuff. However, I asked Gilbert which was first, and he said it was the EGA version.
...and now, they are making authentic remake of this game!
what do you think of that, folks...
i saw some gameplay here on youtoube, and... they DO make it authentic... but, I don't know how the new generations will accept it...
but the point is... this is a classic, and should not mess it up like the new monkey island series releasing this summer - the tales of monkey island... awful...
Yeah... It makes sense that they do it for money... But the new Secret of Monkey Island, as I saw, IS authentic to the original... And if it's up to me, I would like to play SMI and MI2: LeChuck's Revenge on better resolution, and most important - with Dominic Armato included!
I've not heard of a MI2 remake yet, but the resolution won't matter if your looking at the original graphics and if your looking at the new graphics, then its not monkey island imho.
Excellent vid, Matt. This one is really informative - great background info about Ron Gilbert and his hatred for previous adventure games. I too had a distaste for random deaths and oblique puzzles. Monkey Island changed it all - like playing an excellently written and drawn comic book.
Nice rockstar intro Matt! I have a similar t-shirt, by the way. It depicts the evolutionary chain, with cromagnon man in the middle and a hunched and seated computer operator silhouette at the end. Sort of goes up, then down, pyramid style!
Coincidentally, I found a youtube vid a couple of days ago in which the frustrating nature of pre-Monkey Island Sierra games is amusingly discussed. Kings Quest V review by a youtuber called excalibur brothers.
Funny you should say that. The authors of the "Rough Guide" gaming book say the 2nd one is the best, whereas I still like the original. I agree, though, a series like this should focus on content rather than graphics; that's not what makes them fun.
Do Space Quest!

Anyway, thanks dude! :)

And you can't understate the talent of Michael Land, such great soundtrack.

No doubt! I also like the many remixes and remakes you can find on the net. I still think it's some of the best computer music of the era.
