Return to Oz gave me so many nightmares I actually convinced myself it didn't exist and that I faked seeing it. Then I stumbled across it on TV one day and was freaked out all over again. That damn scene with the screaming heads, ugh ugh ugh!
I would have put the Nutcracker Prince in this list. I remember at freaking 22 years old watching it for the first time, and at the end when that giant rat is slowly stalking after the girl while bleeding out and at his last breath while that dramatic piece is playing in the background was freaking haunting as hell.
in my opinion the hunchback of notre dam should be 1 because of the evilness of it all.Frollo wants to have sex with esmeralda and because of the song hellfire the entire movie nearly got a 13 rating.
I actually Recreated the Wheeler Costume wheels, helmet face and ALL! you can check the currently and unfortunetly one video i have posted in my youtubez!
the basilisk was very creepy, i read the book of Nimh before i saw the movie, frollo makes the movie almost pg13, poltergeist has something from Joshua, how could Gremlins (1984) mock Roald Dahl's first book, Mombi is scarier than Elphaba
@PlushMarioRhett1 Toto was left behind. When Dorothy is on her way to the hospital, Toto chases after her. Dorothy tells him to go home while he's chasing her. Toto listens and stays behind. But when she somehow gets to Oz, her chicken (who is last seen at her house) is with her instead of Toto. *shrugs* I know the chicken is important at the end. Though I think it's silly.
@PrincessJinx100 Well I ought to admit some parts of The Hunchback of Notre Dame were very dark and scary for me when I was a child including Beauty and the Beast.
Seriously, I don't see how you can really state your opinion on The Black Cauldron being ANYTHING like Tolkien's work, when it's by Llyod Alexander. Are you a moron? Do your research before saying that a decent movie is shit.
@kbkh1920 He never said it was shit jesus, it's a dark movie a good movie but dark but he is right it's not compleatly acurate to that style that it was portraying.
damn, Return to Oz was horrifying... the wheelers and the witch with the interchangable heads as well as the rock monster, and then dorothy flying through some psychadelic trip.. what the hell?
Hoor movies with kids getting the plug pulled is the only thing that really scares me but coraline actually freaked me out pretty bad and the fact I always watch the hunchback at night when every ones asleep might also be the reason that creeps me out.
What about "something wicked this way comes" its so scary that I will never ever watch it and thanks for giving respect to the movies instead of insulting them because they made them scary. And I own Pinnochio and it still creeps me out and once my sister came in during the donkey part and she was LAUGHING but she had like no idea what was going on in the film, but, Pinnochio is a classic and an old classic at that so it's good.
have you seen disney's Something Wicked This Way Comes? That was a very dark movie and from what I have heard the darkest of movies disney has produced
Secret of Nimh is Don Bluth at his best! It is so awesome! I also loved the first Land Before Time, All Dogs Go to Heaven and An American Tail.
Great list! However, I am surprised that Nightmare Before Christmas didn't make the list or Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. I mean the latter has this creepy candy maker who..."punishes" these bratty children in the most tasty of ways.
DANG pinocio however u spell that scared the CRAP OUT OF ME when i was little. I got a head ache and was terrorized after seeing the fair and donkey scene
@captaibtaco2345 i saw tangled...not that scary, in my opinion. but when i watched this as a kid back in the 90s, the wheelers totally freaked me out -_____-' now, i admit theyre not THAT scary...but still kinda creepy e.e
I don't think anybody will dispute the number one pick on this list. The scene when Dorothy is in Mambi's chamber and her head comes to life, screaming, seriously disturbed me. It still does, now that I'm thinking about it.
Have you seen the Brave Little Toaster? I remember as a kid thinking the film was all light and cheery, then I find out the film is as phsycotic as Pinocchio. To me, it's like a cross between Toy Story 3 and Watership Down. If you have seen the Brave Little Toaster, why is it not on the list?
Again, great commentary. The '80s film rating system was really messed up. It's amazing to see how dark and serious family films were back then compared to today's standards. But I'm going to have to disagree with you on one thing. I think "The Hunchback of Notre Dame", not "Pinocchio" is the darkest animated Disney film ever made.
@ThatFellowCoat I completely disagree with ya. It's one of those animated feature that treats the younger audience as adults and a very good adaption of Richard Adams' book.
@clashrogers You know, I really have to agree. On the whole, Disney's older features were for young and old, alike. That's most obvious in the early animated shorts where it wasn't very uncommon to see a one of Disney's famous charcters drunk, smoking tobacco or rolling up there sleeves for a fistfight. The more recent animated features definately pander to children more than they used to.
Very good list and commentary. I think all kids have watched one of these movies at one point and gotten the beejeebies scared out of them.
I just watched Coraline with some friends and it is really a great scary film, despite being rated PG and more marketed towards kids.
LOL "wheelers...ugh...send them away...[hiding] Are they gone?" I've never seen Return to Oz but the Wheeler scene you showed managed to freak me out. Out of context, mind you.
@alagateryandchesnut3 Nope, Return to Oz is not a musical. In fact, though it was marketed as a sequel to the Judy Garland musical, the only thing it has in come with that one are character and location names and they use the ruby slippers (even though, in the book, Dorothy wears silver shoes).
@Nsanity96 Ray Harryhausen was a pioneer of stop-motion special effects, who is probably most well known for his work on Jason and the Argonauts and Clash of the Titans.
@Nsanity96 Since Fellow brought up Clash of the Titans, you can watch the latest episode of Fantasy Movie Memories, which talks about the film and Harryhausen.
If I could suggest something about the YouTube uploads of the new episodes, if I were you, I'd hold back on uploading each episode on YouTube for one or two weeks after it's put on the site and on Blip.
@ForbiddenDouchebag The problem with that is that I end up getting a lot less views here on YouTube. Funnily enough, I'm not planning on uploading some of the next episodes on the schedule to YouTube.
@DanielLaux42992 Another recent example is Tangled. The film is a musical with songs by Alan Menken and Rapunzel the star. You wouldn't know that from the trailer.
@ThatFellowCoat Well, All Dogs Go to Heaven is a pretty old movie, but I understand what you're saying. Hopefully though, these types of trailers are gonna work (unless the movie's a bad one, but I doubt that's the case).
