I loved Roddy Piper vs Greg Valentine Starrcade 83 Dog Coller match. I mean he broke piper's eardrum and he's bleeding crazy. And Solie sold it so well, you were on pins and needles watching that match.
I'll give the casket match a pass because HBK and Taker pulled a good one out. However, HBK and Taker could probably make a Kennel from Hell match worth watching...
@mattytheking001 I think people give those matches crap but theats because it's usually the wrong people fighting. Bret vs HBK awesome, Brock vs Angle awesome, Rock and HHH was pretty good and even though it was 30 minutes not an hour, Styles vs The Fallen Angel. How about the shimmer one, a iron women match between Daizee Haze and Rebecca knox if I remember correctly. Awesome match
i dont htink u can blame vince russo invented the "reverse" battle royal...i think that either the original tri-state wrestling alliance (the pre-cursor 2 the original ecw)...& even the original "eastern"-era ecw did it,as well...maybe russo saw it & brought it 2 the wherever he brought it 2 (im guessing either wcw &/or tna)...
worst was Kennel from hell of couse but I liked the concept of having the Hell in a cell over a steel cage but that turned out wrong. the best is iron man match. Cena-Orton, Rock-HHH, HBK-Bret. so many good ones.
What State do you guys Broadcast from? Im a retired at age 33 wrestler out of Florida and We Here in Florida Wrestling Feds watch you guys all the Time, I am a Big Fan of you guys. You will all be Mainstream TV Level In the Next few years, i can totally See it!
i think the old ecw (eastern) &/or its predacessor...twa (pro wrestling)(tri state) invented the "reverse" battle royal...& was even used by iwccw/icw...wh even had a BR in an empty pool or something...during the fall/winter...in the east coast,no less (NJ/PA/upstate NY mostly)...
For worst matches you guys forgot Vince Russo's Viagra on a Pole Match. I think it was between Billy Kidman and Shane Douglas it was when they were fighting over Torrie Wilson
Any thing on a pole matches always suck and they were invented long before Russo, though for Russo also toss in Pinata on a pole and Judy Bagwell on a pole for pure sucking. Scaffold matches always sucked because it is impossible to do any thing up there and they led to horrible injuries. Blindfold matches always suck unless you are in the live crowd cheering the face on. Worst match nobody knows about is shark cage match with 2 guys in a cage smaller than a closet (see Wrestling Gold box set)
Let me ask you guys, do you think that any two wrestlers, currently in the WWE can wrestle a 1 hour iron man match. That means the fans being engaged for an hour of one match and still being engaged. And this doesn't include saying, Shawn Michaels ten years younger.
Shawn Michaels can still go an hour because I saw him carry Cena for near an hour in a great match (that proved Cena could go an hour too). HHH has proven multiple times he can go an hour as can most WWF guys if they get enough cardio training. Best gimmick match ever was Pat Patterson creating the Royal Rumble because that 1 match has sold pay per views for over 20 years now. Cage matches also have to be up there as best gimmick match ever whether you call Hell In A Cell a cage or not.
I think it would be entertaining to see the Roundtable come up with some gimmick matches of their own. You guys should do that at some point. Maybe put this one down for your next Q & A.
I realize how much it costs for microphones, but could you guys maybe talk a bit louder. I love the show, but half the time I can barely make out what you guys are saying.
I don't really think of them so much as gimmick matches as just matches with different rules than the standard match. My favorite special matches are Royal Rumble, elimination chamber, Battle Bowl, and anything that goes backstage or out of the arena.
I too think scaffolds are dangerous and uneventful, but the promos for them were pretty cool, and Night of the Skywalkers sounds like Star Wars. War Games is a great idea, but the cage was too low to do many moves. See Sid Vicious and LOD.
Sid injured Pillman on a powerbomb because the cage was too low, and the Road Warriors couldn't do a doomsday device on JJ in the cramped cage. Another gimmick match I really don't like is the loser leaves the fed / retires match. Why? Because they never leave the fed or retire. What's the point?
One last favorite that I forgot - The triple cage. Made famous by the movie Ready 2 Rumble, this match was not only dangerous but it just looked awesome. the cage nearly reaches the rafters of the arena. If WCW did all their post 2000 War Games in this cage, and put them on PPVs, it may still be in business today.
@WrestlingRoundtable King of The Mountain is my worst gimmick match. How many rules does that match have? I have too many for best. War Games is probably my favorite, Hell in A Cell, Ladder Matches, TLC.
actually...tri-state/e(astern)cw invented the "reverse" battle royal...i do believe they did...from what i remember...they did it better than ANY russo-ized version!!!!!...
As for the bets gimmick matches, surprised you didn't mention the triple threat match. Like most great gimmick matches, its simple but effective. It allows for fast paced action and is usually pretty exciting.
Also, the basic Falls Count Anywhere/hardcore match/street fight/belfast brawl/No DQ match/ No Holds barred Match/Unsanctioned fight is a great gimmick match. Once again it's simple and effective- anything goes.
going right back into history i would say that the most succesful gimmick match is/was the basic tag team match,so succesful it is now thought of as a standard match, you will see at least one on every card held.
I also hated the gimmick matches with Taker back in the day because if you were a smart fan in the 90s. You knew noone was gonna pin Taker so the gimmick matches was a easy way to put someone else over without pinning him. Look at his track record. Casket match vs Yoko, Boiler room brawl with Mankind, Buried Alive with Mankind. All losses.
I hate the bullrope turnbuckle match where you have to touch all 4 corners. It always has the same ending with the heel or face following his opponent touching every turnbuckle right after his opponent does till the 4th one. Then he halts the guy and is catapulted into touching the 4th and winning turnbuckle.lol.
I don't know if anyone remembers this doozy of a BAD match: But It was Dustin Rhodes' last match before coming to WWF as Goldust. It was againt Blacktop Bully (Barry Darsow) aboard a transport truck. The King Of The Road match it was called. God, that was awful for 2005 WCW, and WCW was awesome around that time, but that shit was GOD fucking awful.
lol hell yea I remember I was really marking out on that ending with Magnum T.A submitting Tully Blanchard with that spike to the eye. Great match. In the 80s u saw a cage match and you really thought someone might get murdered LOL another example is that War Games finish when RW Hawk is digging that spiked leather thing into the big masked guy's eye for the submission. I couldnt belive how Hawk could be so cruel! LOL those were the good old days
Cosigned on the mask and hair matches. What a great concept!
Also, I know some people view these matches as nothing more than collections of (needlessly) high risk spots, but I'm a HUUUUUUGE fan of the TLC concept. The first two had 3 tag teams that I'm not even a particularly huge fan of, but they still managed to be 2 of the most exciting matches ever because the gimmick just suited each team perfectly. I also loved the one with Jericho & Benoit and the later one with Edge/Flair.
I agree, Scaffold matches are awful, primarily because there is not a lot of actual wrestling moves you can do up there, so the wrestlers become limited in what they can actually do.
They've kind of gotten away from one very underrated element at RR. I like when the ring is full, action is full tilt, and those matchups everyone wants to see happen. i.e. old feuds renewed for a few moments; two simular guys face off, like two big men; and two young stars with huge momentum faceoff for the first time, like Cena/Batista in '05. That's always fun. I'd like to see them get back to it.
@kanedasrifle oh yes, it's actually on Mick Foley's dvd "Hard Knock and Cheap Pops" they play the match between Al Snow and Big Boss man with Mick commentating, I mean dogs humping and shitting outside of the ring........its terrible.
lol the kennel from hell! Oh man that was indeed the worst one! I remember Jericho coming out after that match, cutting a promo saying "I am here to save this brutal boring ppv!" And Jerry Lawler was commentating, and he said "You should of came during the dog match." ROFL!
The TNA Feast Or Fired Match is Terrible in my opinion. They never build the winners enough to make them believable, and the guy who gets the fired case is usually predicted on the net before the match even starts. That and it's a glorified MITB ripoff.
what is even worse is the winners dont have to climb to poles to grab the briefcase. they can beat up whoever gets the case first and then they are the winners.
Another bad match: The Hog Pen Match (The WWE had two of those, and they should have learned their lesson during the one between Henry Godwinn and Hunter Hearst Helmsley, but NO, we had to have Santin(a) Marella vs. Vickie Guerrero as well
WCW in 1996, when Hogan and Savage had to face like 8 guys in a 3-tier cage. that was a horrible match. another bad one was Sting vs Roberts in a 'coal miners glove match'. also the sumo monster truck match!
I can remember this really crappy ass match from WCW 2000 (a lot of crappy shit came from WCW 2000) it was a Graveyard Match between The KISS Demon and Vampiro. It was so bad, it was good, LOL
I'm surprised you guys didn't mention the blindfold match between Chris Harris and James Storm. Blindfold matches in general suck, because the potential for BOTCHED moves increases tenfold
ha, good one. But now that you mention it(HHH & Buried Alive matches, heh), the only ones I remember liking were the first at IYH : Buried Alive because Mankind & UT tore it up before the shitty finish, and I enjoyed the UT & Big Show Vs. Rock 'N Sock one from Smackdown in fall of 99. A good Russo-style chaotic tag match, plus it had that HHH/Austin ambulance brawl at the end.
one of the worst matches was the diva battle royal @ wrestlemania 25 now a nice sleeper for a good one is the storm vs harris street fight from impact
Hardyz vs. Dudleys vs. Edge and Christian TLC match, was that summerslam 2000? Can't remember, anyways, shit hot match great spots, great build up, the dudleys where real heel talents back then, edge and christian providing the comedy gold and the hardyz providing the high flying idiocy. HHH vs. Cactus Jack Street Fight, also Summerslam 2000?? That was a hella good PPV, if it was! Jack Pedigree onto the tacks, cmon!
Great episode, guys! I'd say my favorite gimmick is the Royal Rumble. They all haven't been great, but I just like the mystery about who comes out next.
Best gimmick match for my money was TLC at WM17. It was a spotfest, but it was a gloriously entertaining one.
You guys should've mentioned The Chair Match between Batista and The Undertaker. Ended in DQ? WTF?
But, the best gimmick matches imo is TLC and Hell in the Cell. Yes, both are the evolution of Ladder and Cage matches, but both have made several great moments and many great matches for it. HIAC would be Mankind/Undertaker which ended their legendary rivalry and TLC 2 in Wrestlemania 17.
Strange as it seems, I actually loved Cena vs Umaga Last Man Standing. I actually was entertained through almost all of it. To me it's been the best match either of those wrestlers have had in their career.
1 gimmick match I have only seen one time at a local indy fed here in Texas was a 3 2 1 match. It was a 2 out of 3 pinfall match, but after each pinfall the count went down. So at first it was a 3 count, then a 2 count, then a 1 count.
I will agree that TNA kind of over does it with their gimmick matches, they have too many rules that get changed all the time in order to justify the progression of a storyline
War Games at WrestleWar 92 is the best American match I've ever seen. I love War Games (excluding the screwjob endings during the nWo era).
Royal Rumble is very enjoyable almost always (not 99).
I Quit and Last Man Standing matches always get me going when the fued is really heated. JBL's best singles match by far was the I Quit match with Cena at JD 2005.
In my opinion: Best: War Games Royal Rumble Ultimate X Match I Quit Match TLC Good Old fashioned Cage Match Worst: Bra & Panties Match Anything done by TNA during the Vince Russo Era...In fact, anything booked by Vince Russo
That embarassing bedroom match was hot and a hot mess. Like, you said, T'NA is a click away and soft pillows DO NOT make a weapons match.
I DO find the Boiler Room Brawls very creative and interesting, though dead. Taker vs Mankind in that scary hardcore playground just caught all of my attention. The time saving "Technical Difficulties" was alittle predictable but smart.
first off great show as always. A bad gimmick match was the "You can't see me match" with Cena. that was pretty sad. A gimmick match that I like personally is a first blood match. But the Best gimmick match was probably the Taker/Mankind hell in a cell. Gotta love JR's play by play after Foley got thrown off. Anyways can't wait for next show... Will the Invasion be one of the topics discussed during the decade in review segment?
I thought the Triple Decker Cage match from WCW in 2000 was amazing simply just by the sight of it. If it was utilised better the matches would have been great also. It was a Hell in a Cell with a cage on top (with weapons inside) with another cage on top of that one & you had to retrive the belt from the very top cage & make you way back down to the bottom through the door for the win.
I love the Royal Rumble myself, my younger bro says he likes it more than Wrestlemania even. They do battle royals ALL year, but they are NEVER as good nor with the same stakes as the Rumble.
I would be fine with the gimmick PPVs IF and only IF we don't see those matches again. Breaking Point, all submission matches? Fine, just don't give me a submission match for the rest of the year. TLC? Cool. But again, ONLY do it at that PPV.
I just made a comment similar to your comment, LOL. Especially they one between Harris and Storm. The fact that the potential for botched moves increases tenfold in blindfold matches, it's a turnoff for me.
royal rumble and elimination chamber matches are my favourites and punjabi prison matches are awful. i also hate steel cage matches cos guess what you wrestlers, there is a fucking door right there. kind of makes the match stupid for me.
1st view... u guys r awesome, luv ur show its my only wrestling fix cus i cant watch tha crap they r puttin on now its unbearable and predictable... all i have now are tha memories thnx
Tim Conley should not be on the show. He is not interesting and is boring. Keep the panel the way it is. You, CHRIS HARRIS, Rodney and Lawrence. I don't give a shit about anyone else please.
PUNJABI PRISON!!! Oh god not that stupid reverse battle royal, that annoyed me, TNA are pretty poor with gimmick matches. Lol, kennel in hell god that was stupid. No that rock and mankind match was hilarious, i loved that on the old rock wwf dvd. Steel cage matches, meh but i hate the escaping out of door, just makes it seem so stupid. Agree with the good gimmick matches. Good show, lads.
one of the most degrading matches, along with the bra and panties, was the pinata on a pole match with the luchadores. plus it had oklahoma (HES GOT A STICK) on commentary
I loved Roddy Piper vs Greg Valentine Starrcade 83 Dog Coller match. I mean he broke piper's eardrum and he's bleeding crazy. And Solie sold it so well, you were on pins and needles watching that match.

Anything hanging from a pole, because guys have to pretend like they don't know how to climb the ropes to give their opponent time to stop them.

The Flag Match:
I can understand the concept of it, especially in the post-Cold War era (mid to late-80's).
However, I can't think of ONE match that was considered even decent. Any thoughts?

About the bra and panties matches, I guess now would be one of those rare chances to say "Thank god for the PG Era."

StanPowder 2 years ago
now in your opinion did ecw ever have a bad gimmick match?
SSGOKU44 2 years ago
one of the worst matches was the diva battle royal @ wrestlemania 25 now a nice sleeper for a good one is the storm vs harris street fight from impact
SSGOKU44 2 years ago
i gotta say The Royal Rumble, i get just as excited as the RR as Wrestlemania

No mentioned of the back-lot brawl or the boiler room brawl where they had little tv monitors set up at ringside?!

Hardyz vs.
HeroesofGrammar 2 years ago
Great episode, guys! I'd say my favorite gimmick is the Royal Rumble. They all haven't been great, but I just like the mystery about who comes out next.
Best gimmick match for my money was TLC at WM17. It was a spotfest, but it was a gloriously entertaining one.
Dreadpirate46 2 years ago
You guys should've mentioned The Chair Match between Batista and The Undertaker. Ended in DQ? WTF?
But, the best gimmick matches imo is TLC and Hell in the Cell. Yes, both are the evolution of Ladder and Cage matches, but both have made several great moments and many great matches for it. HIAC would be Mankind/Undertaker which ended their legendary rivalry and TLC 2 in Wrestlemania 17.
JohnStripedfur 2 years ago
Do celebs count as gimmick matches? Cause I didn't like the LT vs bam-bam match at all! (or Mayweather vs Big Show)
pdg90 2 years ago
Chair match. It's a TLC match where you get DQ'ed for using the "T" and the "L"
pdg90 2 years ago
Strange as it seems, I actually loved Cena vs Umaga Last Man Standing. I actually was entertained through almost all of it. To me it's been the best match either of those wrestlers have had in their career.
garrj8 2 years ago
That's not strange ; we've talked on the show before about how GREAT that match is :)

Blindfold matches are still the worst in my opinion. Even Jake Roberts couldn't make it a good match.
RowdyRodimus 2 years ago
blindfold matches are terrible gimmick matches.
1 gimmick match I have only seen one time at a local indy fed here in Texas was a 3 2 1 match. It was a 2 out of 3 pinfall match, but after each pinfall the count went down. So at first it was a 3 count, then a 2 count, then a 1 count.

I like the King of the mountain match
keh678 2 years ago
I will agree that TNA kind of over does it with their gimmick matches, they have too many rules that get changed all the time in order to justify the progression of a storyline
skullofajester 2 years ago
War Games at WrestleWar 92 is the best American match I've ever seen. I love War Games (excluding the screwjob endings during the nWo era).
Royal Rumble is very enjoyable almost always (not 99).
I Quit and Last Man Standing matches always get me going when the fued is really heated. JBL's best singles match by far was the I Quit match with Cena at JD 2005.
DoubleCrossKing 2 years ago
I thought that match was pretty poor.
JBL's best match to me was probably...vs. Eddie in the Bullrope match at GAB 2004 or in the steel cage match with him on SD!
And great gimmick matches:
Lesnar vs. Angle Iron Man Match in 2003.
The aforementioned bullrope match.
The first couple ultimate X matches before they started doing them 5 times a year.
Just to name some.

I wish WWE would do a war games match. War games 92 was by far the best, but it just wasnt quite the same without the horsemen

I enjoyed this show, but I'm excited about your commentary on the year and the decade. Keep it up.

The time saving "Technical Difficulties" was alittle predictable but smart.

mhc12k 2 years ago
first off great show as always.
Crazyguy151 2 years ago

Not one mention of the blindfold match in the "worst gimmick matches" discussion?
Blindfold matches! Guys, come on!
CallMeDjm 2 years ago 2
I just made a comment similar to your comment, LOL. Especially they one between Harris and Storm. The fact that the potential for botched moves increases tenfold in blindfold matches, it's a turnoff for me.

The punjabi prison matches where pretty stupid but the casket match between sting & abyss jesus that was really sad
the best off the top of my head was the piper/valentine dog collar match and of course the HBK/taker hell in a cell match
DaimondInTheRough 2 years ago
royal rumble and elimination chamber matches are my favourites and punjabi prison matches are awful. i also hate steel cage matches cos guess what you wrestlers, there is a fucking door right there. kind of makes the match stupid for me.

But My favorite gimmick match is the Last Man Standing match.
I enjoy Barb Wire Matches for guilty pleasures.
