eswinthedrummer-Yes it is messed up. There is a reason why ALL of the suppliers of these devises are located overseas - these products are NOT LEGAL for citizens of the U.S. They won't tell you that, however.

Yes, I was disappointed also. I thought they would be fun for astronomy and hobby use. The sites are bragging about "military quality" and the destructive capabilities of these-that kind of advertising is probably why they are being seized at import. If they were LEGAL, why are all the suppliers overseas?! Beware of the ones sold on eBay-most have IR filters removed to give false high power readings-very dangerous-allows INVISIBLE radiation to possibly reflect and damage eyesight. Good Luck

They don't need it. Blu-Ray and Red lasers do not output any IR. This is only for green lasers because they are made with an IR diode and a KTP crystal.

No, red does not outpit IR. It outputs pure red light. Green outputs IR because they are pumped by an IR diode. Red lasers only use a single red diode.

Open up the DVD player in your computer and build a custom circuit to power the laser diode. Popping balloons at Disney Land with one of those bad boys is the best thing in the world.

The problem is that most of the eBay lasers obtain higher mw (power) levels by removing the IR (infrared) filters. This gives not only a false high power reading, but more importantly, is VERY dangerous. With the IR filter removed, there is also radiation NOT visible to the eye. If that invisible radiation reflects into your (or someone else's) eyes, you can have permanent eye damage. The companies that make the GOOD lasers are all out of the country. They are being confiscated at import.

you can get a good laser that can go for miles for cheap on ebay go on ebay and type in 5mw 532nm astronomy powerfull laser and u can get dem for £11.00 or $14.00
