I just wanted to thank you for sharing your video clips of lawn mowers. My son who is autistic is obsessed with watching the spinning motion, and it has been a blessing to have found so many of these clips for him to watch.
wow that engine looks exactly the same as mine and runs exactly the same as mine it knocks burns oil low compression and loses spark occasionally I threw it away but kept all the parts(exept the block)
My dad has the same lawnmower as that, but with ball bearing wheels. His is in a bit better condition though, but it sounds and runs perfectly! The guys at the mower shop say that for its age, it is doing really well!!
I actually only buy the blue 1970s ones as they seem to hold up better for their age than the later red ones. This 200ES I've pretty much done my $ on (though it only cost me $18) and now when I see them I just walk past... good to hear your dad's is hanging in there.
Yeah, he bought it in 1987, and 20 years later it is still going like a champion! But the Blue 1970's ones that you have are going pretty well also. My dad also got a new STIHL brushcutter, and the guys at the mower shop said, if you look after it, it will go for 25 years or longer.
Hmmm.. in Australia, the year something is manufactured forms the model year, which is different from the USA.
However in this case I agree with you.. the engine was made in Milwaukee Wisconsin in Oct 1986, would have taken some time to be freighted to Queensland, Australia where Rover build mowers. By the time it was built and delivered to a dealer and sold, it may well have been 1987.
I guess this also holds true for all the other B&S engine I have posted here?
The 1976 Baron 45 code is 76120608 and the 1979 Baron 45 code is 79073108. The "1977" Craftsman I put up a couple of months ago I didn't take the details down before someone bought it and took it away (ironically only about 1/2hr before you emailed asking me about it). I responded to your email but I appear to be blocked.
Those two codes (in regards to the Baron 45s) would point to those models as being from 1977 and 1980 respectively, for the same reason I told you of this '87 Rover 200ES.
Do you happen to know where I might find the codes on a Tecumseh engine (I have one fitted to a Rover Baron 45) and a Suzuki 2 strok (I have one fitted to a Rover 2 Stroke XL)?
I can tell you where to find numbers on a Tecumseh engine: usually, you can find these stamped on the blower housing just above the cylinder head.
The Suzuki engines (which Toro had used on some of their commercial-grade mowers, alongside the Tecumseh and B&S models) are a different story, though (check either the shroud or the engine block).
Is that a rod knock or a main bearing knock ?

@1972FordF150 That's a rod knock. Sounds like my old '82 Briggs, but mine was owned by a church, so you can imagine the hours it had done.

Won't help much with the big end knock this engine has.

sounds great! (lol)
adb140275 4 years ago
Its pretty bad hey? :-) In fact it no longer exists as its been ratted for parts and the remainder sent to the metal recyclers.
RE1974 4 years ago
Actually, this would be a 1987 model going by the engine code because anything built after June would qualify it as for the next year.
The engine code # points to the engine as being built on October 6, 1986.

Yes. And now I would like to ask you, what are the B&S engine date codes (they too have 8 digits) on the 1974 and '76 Rovers???
