@101MattSki Yes, it's difficult to say who wrote the song, cause many have done it ! That's the problem when you listen to the old Blues, You can't tell for sure who made the song originally ?
But, I know one thing for sure. Its a good song and they never die !
@clevblue Ya, you know there are many version of this song, but I think this one is one of the best. Don't ask me who made it up or recorded it first, cause, I don't know.
BUT, I know, one thing for sure : Good Songs Never Die !
In the old days it was rather common, artists "borrowed" songs and claimed they were their own. I think as you say, Jazz wrote it, but another got credit for it. Sorry, but true !
A piano player named Charlie Segar, who was active on the Chicago blues scene at the same time as Gillum, recorded a version of "Key To The Highway" a few months before Gillum's version. But Segar's version didn't use the distinctive chord progression that Gillum (and just about everyone else after him) used. So even though Gillum didn't record it first, it was his version that was the popular one.
Charlie Segar's original "Key to the Highway" was done in the form of a mid-tempo twelve-bar blues. When Jazz Gillum recorded it later that year, the song became an eight-bar blues, as it is usually known (May 9, 1940 Bluebird B 8529). A year later, Big Bill Broonzy recorded "Key to the Highway," creating the best known of the early versions of the song (May 2, 1941 OKeh 6242).
"Key to the Highway" is usually credited to Charles 'Chas' Segar and William 'Big Bill' Broonzy.[2] As Broonzy explains: "Some of the verses he [Charlie Segar] was singing it in the South the same time as I sung it in the South. And practically all of blues is just a little change from the way that they was sung when I was a kid . . . You take one song and make fifty out of it . . . just change it a little bit."
It aint easy to keep track of all the recordings, but its new to me that Charles 'Chas' Segar and W Big Bill Broonzy, did the original sound recordings.
I have often wonder who made this song up and why this chord-progression in the Blues !
Well, Music is good and to have a good friend, like you, is even better !
awesome! this piece is kinda bridging the gap between oldtime-harmonica & the "modern" blues progression that sonny terry & most succeeding artists established from then on...
Mattias, my pleasure to present The Key To The Highway. A wellknown song, and with a somewhat different blues chord progression. If you compare to the earlier recordings.
@Kickingmule no problem...thanks for the upload

Charlie Segar sang and recorded this first. It was written by him in collaboration with Big Bill Broonzy who had a hit with it a few years later.

According to Michael Bloomfield, who sought out those old blues players, Jazz wrote this tune but never received publishing money for it.

Bill "Jazz" Gillum did a lot of recordings, by himself as well as acc others. I think he's a very good blues- and harmonica-man.
