This arrangement was - as far as I can see - NEVER released on any of the albums from the period; "Broadway The Hardway", "Best Band You Never Heard In Your Life", "Make A Jazz Noise Here" or the "You Can't Do That Onstage Anymore" series.
Perhaps Frank felt it wasn't working well enough to even have performed it, let alone put it out on record.
Can anyone confirm that this was played at all during the '88 tour?
I think this is the first youtube video ive seen with zero "dislikes" Only Zappa could accomplish that, even keeping the most persistant internet trolls at bay from his grave.
1 minute and 47 seconds...I felt like it lasted for 30 minutes, Frank,Frank Zappa can actually make time flow slower.
I mean those 30 minutes were beautiful, but when I woke up I saw it actually lasted only about 2 minutes...What was that? What ever it was I am gonna play the video again and enjoy those ,30, minutes again, and again, and again...
the sleep dirt/black napkins hybrid - prformed only twice after 1975! actually, the great mystery of the official Zappa catalogue is: why haven't they released THIS song (again, I hope Mrs Z is reading this!)
This is one of my top favorite YouTube's ever. A soundcheck, even! Nice to listen to and to even watch an electric version of a great FZ instrumental, although even this one also is incomplete, just like the official accoustic recording. It sounds like a 'second voice' instro to Black Napkins, and still has a life of its own. Incredibly beautiful. Would somebody make this available on DVD soon, please?
zappa could turn anything into music and then make a whole bunch of completely different versions..;each one more fantastic than the other. mind boggling!
Because it's the only known video version of the song available. It was never performed in 1988, just at soundchecks, though there are a few recording from 75
Does anyone have this version of this song in full, maybe from this nights concert. If so would love to see it. The most amazing song I've never heard.
That's because he's improvising over this and he's bound to reproduce some licks. The original sleep dirt is only 2 acoustic guitars, it's really beautiful.
yeah it definitely does, he combined the two in some shows, i have an mp3 of him playing this and then seamlessly going right into napkins. brilliant.
i think i was looking for live versions of sleep dirt on soulseek if i remember correctly. the track title is '15 sleep dirt~black napkins' im on soulseek now by the way if you want to d/l it
absolutely, the first notes are napkins, the accompanying notes are sleep dirt though. Tears im my eyes every time I listen to the acoustic version from the sleep dirt album.... pure beauty
well, what can a few words capture and evoke a heart that resonates to such a being as Zappa? What a person. What an artist. What a father. What a lover. Though parts of me may be the antithesis or the focus of the ideologies of what Zappa shared in his works, I can say now, as I am 40, that he encompassed the epitome of brilliance in a time where there were no role models but ones made from constructed realities.
He was also one of te most insanely difficult human beings ever to be born. I try to bring an element of his overbearing anal-retentiveness to my band, but they threaten to kick me out. Gotta love someone who is enough of an asshole to get the job done in as spectacular a way as Frank did.
I can imagine. At the level of composition writing, musical ability and passion, you would think that he would have earned a gold in a musicians' form of the Olympics. I can always set aside a person's behaviour when what they have to offer is an incredible gift to display and to share of the creative side of our humanity. I can relate to your comment.
