All the assault rifle with the exception of the G3A3, have the same damage, 25-17 (the G3 have 30-20), and the carbines all have 25-14.3, with the exception of that Scar-H (does 30-17, used to do 34-17 before it was patched) and the Aks-74u that does 25-17. The M4 and M4A1 are pretty much the same gun with the exception of full auto and burst fire, so I usually go for the M4A1, unless there will be a lot of long sight lines and not CQC.

It also shows that the AEK-971 has a lot higher fire rate then the gun stats on battlelog says. Also if look at that sight you can see that the M4A1 has one of the tightest bullet spread compare to the other engineer weapons, which makes it more accurate and more effective.
