Well the current configuration allows our trains to be faster(about 210), but for that we would first need to change our track configuration to concrete base than the current wooden base. This is now being done or is going to start soon(I sure about Mumbai) along with a bill that shld b passed in this winter session for a HSR between Mumbai and New Delhi. All the feasibility study is done and collaboration with Japan is set, just the bill needs to be passed.

Indian trains have 'unreserved' coaches and 'reserved' coaches...

'Unreserved' coaches can be boarded by anyone and any number of ppl. They have no limit.

'Reserved' coaches have limit on number of passengers...

They can be broadly classfied into Sleeper and Chair cars.

in Sleeper class, 1 seat and 1 berth will be reserved in ur name

In Chair car, only seat will be there... U can only sit, can't lay back and sleep....

chair car is basically provided in hi speed trains which will cover long distance in short time, or the train will not exceed the journey above 12 hours wer ppl can sit insted of sleeping. It depnads upon the mood of passenger wat they prefer.

@peterpocasset chair car is such a car which has only chair (and no sleeping facility). Such comparatively high speed trains called Shatabdis leave a city in the morning and reach ther destination 300-750 km away by noon, and return back to their home by evening or late dinner time. By the way this is not India's fastest train. It just averages ~75 kmph.

I guess the main problem is with the tracks. Don't think they are suited for high speed trains. Yours is also a good point. Many two wheeler riders try to cross the tracks even when the railway gate is down.

Up yours wikct2, Indian Railways carries 20 f'ing million passengers PER DAY. China's peak is 5 million passengers. A change to the system puts at risk many of those daily passengers. Also we became an independent nation not too long ago..It will take time but we will modernize soon enuf..
