Stumbled across this introducing a sax student of mine to GWJ stuff.
Never heard a harp player or rack player for that matter approaching an impro, the right way.Now that is how to develop. Great music, ha ha understands totally the approach for this kind of vehicle. if he ain't the authority on how to go about it, he should be. Now for all you jazz cats out there that is how to approach Mr magic.A different bag of tricks.Makes it look easy. A great muso ,thanks
It,s more the player than the song that may make the music boring. I,m tired of poeple who say blues are boring and then play a song like Mr Magic that has a twenty minute solo over two chords. It,s up to the player to give each song it,s own identitey.

I am a Harp player out here in S.F. Calif. and very much dug what Mr. Jimmi Lee was doing. I read in the comments that he was playing a Minor Tuned Harp, was that a F Minor Harp? thanks for the Post . Eugene in Sausalito.
This video changed my life. Adam has been my mentor (via YouTube) since March of 2009, so of course I was familiar with Satan & Adam. I even thought about putting together a similar duo with my friend, Michael Tracey. Then I saw this, reminding me about the rack! Now, I'm doing it all by myself, playing a three-piece drumset with my feet, guitar with my hands, singing, and playing rack harp. I owe my musical direction to the education I received from Adam, Mr. Satan, and Jimi Lee. Thanks!
God how I hate Blues players...it seems its all they do...same ole same ole...and then bamm...you get a Jimi Lee in there doing jazz and other stuff and not just being good on the guitar but blowing circles around the angels on a sweet sounding harmonica. What a talent and as a musician...I am humbled & impressed!!!
the recording started after he'd been playing a bit but basically the first groove follows this progression: Cm7 | F9 |Cm7 | Ab/Bb - Eb7/Ab | Abmaj7 | G7#9
Second groove is basically:
EbMa7 | Abmaj7 | Ebmaj7| G7#9 |
Note (sorry, no pun intended) he uses different fingerings for some of the chords.
It's definitely a cool groove! Have fun playing it :-)
as guitar player and now learning harp, jimi's stuff with both is amazing. very inspiring. will try to develop my style with standard tuning side guitar and harp. truly awesome. thanks, adam, for posting and all you do for us harp hobbyist. aloha
Adam I met Jimi after I had left my harmonica case with all my harps and mics on top of my truck and it had fallen off going down the highway right outside of Austin. I related the story online with a local blues chat group and whammo I got an email from Jimi and someone had brought the case with everything in it to him. He returned about 500.00 dollars worth of harps and mics to me. He is not only an incredible harp player but a really good guy.
Jimi is rap star. He stayed up till 130 in the morning performing for about 6 of us at a Gindick camp in Dallas. The security asked him to stop I asked if he knew any rap songs and the guys from Texas looked at me like I had 2 heads so did Jimi but he played the best rap song I ever heard the Texas boys loved it also
Great tune, great guy. We met Jimi in Clarkdsale this spring and again in Columbus, OH. Jimi is the real deal. Check out his web site. Adam, thanks for posting.
Interesting... That is possible. A Bb in 3rd would put him in Cm. Also, Jimi's harp has a white comb - the LO is black... But, those licks he's playing lay so nicely on the Cm, and those double-stop-octaves @ 2:55 don't work on the Bb in 3rd. Another thought; it could be an 1847 F major custom tuned to play Cm in cross like the LO is. I'm gonna do some experiments... Anyone else? Let's keep it clean and civil. After all, this is kudzuRunner; where we come to learn.
Will: Congratulations! You're the first person to figure out that something interesting is going on. Jimi is using a minor-tuned harp; played cross, the thirds and sixths (3 draw and 5 blow, for example) are tuned a half-step flat. Jimi tunes them himself. And the DO make a difference! But without his soulfulness, such changes mean nothing.
I've got it. I don't want people to feel inundated with videos--especially when they're this potent--so I schedule them at roughly twice-a-week intervals. I've got some other stuff to post, too. But I'll get to it. Check back with me in a week.
Jimi's live CD is the best. Not only can he play Harp and Guitar at the same time but he can also sing while playing. He does a version of Whammer Jammer that is incredible, and he was playing it with the harp in the rack while playing his guitar. Met him at several Gindick's Jam Camps, he is a great teacher also. One of the all around good guys.
Thanks for posting this marvellous piece of music (and indeed for all the other videos)...
Harp-geek question: Adam, this sounds and looks like Jimi's playing 2nd position, but is he using a regular, richter-tuned) F harp with overblows for the minor 6th / top-octave minor 3rd? Or is he playing a minor tuned harp? Or is it something else entirely?

Excellent! This guy buries me. His playing is very inspirational. I always die with a rack, do you know what kind he's using? It seems hard to find a good one.
Thanks for a great clip Adam, I'll be referring to this one for some time, I believe.
What coordination!! I couldn't play a fraction that well, let alone having to keep in the back of my mind strumming and changes and rhythm on a guitar. Five stars.
Outstanding musicianship. I used to play with a harmonica player in San Diego named Refael Harp who used to play guitar and harmonica, and his ability to play fleet, bittersweet Butterfield style imrovs over his chord work was impressive indeed. Mr.Lee takes it to a new area, and it's interesting he'd be playing some Grover Washington. Great, full tone, wonderful solo construction, wonderful work on the melody. Thank you so much for posting this amazing player.
Jimi Lee is a national treasure. I had a surreal opportunity to sit in and play Mr. Magic, among many other classic blues/jazz tunes, with both Jimi and Adam last weekend in Va Bch...Very inspirational. Thanks for that video Adam!
Thank's Adam the best 7:50 mins on YouTube I'll spend today for sure. Funny, Ive heard this song for many years but never knew the artist or title until today.
Very clean playing with a rack. I notice the rack end is kind of embedded in his chest muscle for stability. Must have bruises there after a long gig. Great phrasing, too.
Absolutely Awsome talent!!! I met Jimmy 2years ago at one of Gindicks` jam camps in Tampa fl. He is a great teacher and a wonderful person, just a real pleasure to talk to.
Adam, I love the 'just cut my head wide open" conceding giggle at the end of the vid... very fitting
