I don't wanna come off as nitpicky but from first sentence when you said that "tactical adventure games" = RPG was straight up lack of research. I am curious what you're looking for in RPG's since you're whining about the most popular DS RPG's as boring. What you were complaining about in those games were basically what makes RPGs. I think you should try finding a different genre to play if you've been dissatisfied with what you've played so far.
@Goatse64 I don't use the term "RPG" because it does not do what a genre title should do, which is hint at how a game plays. I came to this decision a long time ago, but it would take too long to type out here. The thing is that most of the games in this genre are boring because they are easy, have battle systems where you don't have to use any tactics against the enemies you fight, and have dungeons that have no engaging elements like traps or puzzles like this game.
@nomadsoul If they are all so boring like you're saying, then you should honestly find a different genre to play. It's kind of silly finding a review on the game and hear it start out as a rant against most of the games in said genre. It really seems like you're just playing these games just so you can spite about them online.
PS. I'm not defending Nostalgia since I haven't played it yet, but it's kind of irritating seeing a review start off with a bitchfest on games of that genre on the console. Let's say you like FPS's and you're looking at a review on MW3 but the video starts off with a rant on how COD, Crysis, Halo, Borderlands, and Battlefield were all terrible. Then he responds that old games of the genre like Doom and Medal of Honor were good, despite those are not different from the current games he bitched at
Compare this game to something like Chrono Trigger, FFVII, Xenogears, or Valkyrie Profile 2. Each one of those games has challenging combat that involves more than choosing the attack option, and that have traps and puzzles in them to make dungeons more than going through paths that have nothing in them. Not to mention that they all have enemies with special abilities/attacks that add to the tactical nature of the combat. Nostalgia has little of that, and that's why its boring.
@nomadsoul You're wrong on Chrono Trigger and FFVII. Those two were basically the same as these DS titles you're complaining about. The dungeons in Chrono Trigger and FFVII had little to no puzzles or traps. The only difference between a game like DQIX and Chrono Trigger is the techs where you have multiple characters using the same move. FFVII only differed slightly only because of the materia system.
Thanks for the heads up on the Xenogears PSN release(I had almost forgot about it) I've been thoroughly enjoying this game, the battle system is really fun & the story is very engrossing :)
"Keep the reviews coming, nomad! &...have you ever played Valkyria Chronicles?"
@FreshIngredient I bought it when it was released, but I only got as far as mission 7 before I got sidetracked with other things. One day I'll get back to it and play VC II as well
Oh, and enjoy Xenogears. It's been a while since I've played it, but I've played it 5 or 6 times since I bought it in 2001.
