Maybe you can help me out... I've been looking for videos that show how hollow foam pumpkins are made, but have found none... Are they rotocast? Is the same self skinning foam, as used in many other applications, used to create them? Thanks in advance.
@brickintheyard - Thanks for the reply. Actually, I already have been doing some manual rotocasting on my own, so I know the process. However, since I have not worked with the urethane foams, as of yet, I don't know the proportions needed to cast it in the thicknesses I'd need. Also, I don't have a clue as to the amount of time I would need to coat the entire mold so as to prevent voids in the final "shell". Any tips?
@digitalmunky The amount of material needed is going to depend on the size of the piece and the rate of expansion on the foam. As for the time issue, that will depend on the speed of your machine. Call me and I can give you better, more specific advice.
This is SO beyond awesome! I am an artist and have so many things I want to reproduce rather than selling to originals...your videos are helping so much. I am off to buy my supplies to try out casting. I'm looking forward to it! :D
@HAMMERxHCA The mold you see in this video was made in July of 2007 and it is still in use. Depending on what resin you use you can get alot of use out of a 70-30 silicone mold.
How much would you say the final piece weighs? It would be awesome to make some castes like this for halloween as long as the finished product dosen't need some heavy duty drywall screw.
@brickintheyard Yes you can. I made a removable hard top for my Geo Metro convertible using fiberglass over foam. I sanded the foam to shape then began application of 2 layers of
fiberglass. It turned out well. Google TeamSwift Geo Metro Hard top probably for the link
I'm sure this is a stupid question, but how did you level off the back side of the casting as I noticed the expanding foam rose into an uneven surface. I know the foam is cutable/sandable etc but you had a fairly large surface, larger than the average bandsaw or sander. Obviously, during the casting process, one could lay on a top with vents for the foam to expand against, but you didn't, so I'm just wondering how you cleaned it up.
This video is really well explained. thanks so much! I am really new to the process...so im so your help would be appreciated...What is the initial logo mad from? ok...so then you do the silicone...but is the primer and other painted on polyerithane neccisary? Is it possible to layer the foam straight into the mold? does it get stuck? I would be love to get some more specific info on the project im working on if you wouldnt mind...id love to send you a message instead of the comment. Thanks!
amazing video insta subscribe ^^, also how heavy would you say the finished product weighs?

@DrChompi34 The finished piece weighs about 4lbs.

@digitalmunky Check out our video on rotational casting. That process can be done with EZ Flo 120 and some of the high density foams we carry.

Wow thanks so much for this video! I have been looking for a way to make a larger (3-4') sculpture of a logo for my car club.
Do you think that the silicone mold would last long enough to reproduce 5-10 foam plaques/signs?
I am extremely excited now about this method . Thanks again !

How sturdy is this? Im currently making something that may take a little abuse.

@Twitch8965 A low density foam has ok strength but the addition of 1512 as a resin skin gives a really tough, impact resistant surface.

Excellent video demo. BTW, what is the name of the Spray Gun that you are using. It really produced a great finish and quickly.

would this resin be rigid enough that it could be used without the foam?
Tobeanounnced 1 year ago
@Tobeanounnced If the resin layer was cast just a bit thicker it would.

can you use the same process to create a double sided cast (but with something on the other side not just flat) from a two piece mold?
snoozlefroose 2 years ago
Yes. You could also make a 2 piece silicone mold.

cool,thanks

Foam or resin won't stick to silicone. The primer just makes the finished surface easier to paint. The original was made of Chavant NSP clay.
brickintheyard 2 years ago
I have tried in mold painting with spray primer but the paint seems to crack. Do you have this problem?
wesoopunny69 2 years ago
The mold may be shifting or bending after the paint dries.

now is this strong enough for vacuum forming?
thevisualanti 2 years ago
Strong enough? yes. Heat resistant enough? probably not. You could use 15-8 resin which is aluminum filled for better heat deflection.

QUESTION! can you use the expanding foam to make a mold, like a 1 time use mold?

Does painting the silicone mold extend the life of the mold itself?
Stormrunner0002 3 years ago
As long as the paint is not to caustic, yes.

Does pre-priming the mold work with any silicone molds

Priming works with most silicone molds. I say "most" because I have yet to try them all. If in doubt run a small test first.
