Masters and masters..you can't compare guitars players of different of different genres sicne they're bound to have different playing styles. And comparing players like Eric Clapton and Keith Richards to Yngwie Malmsteen is stupid too, since they, too, play way different genres.

Personally, I think Yngwie is a genius...luckily for ALL of us and our unique tastes, there is about 100 guitar geniuses out there for us to be inspired by.
Whether u luv or h8 him, he inspired as many people to GIVE UP GUITAR as he did to actually pick it up & play. The reason is because,when he came on the scene, no one had even thought of playing w/ that style of phrasing or w/ his incredible technique. To some, he may now sound old & tired, but u must keep in mind he still sounds like Yngwie. He will always have a unique voice that anytime you listen to him, uimmediately know its him, & thats the greatest compliment u can ever give a musician.

I agree that "he inspired just as many people to give up guitar" but I would sooner blame that on today's distractions for the younger set. I.e., video games computers, ipods, cell phones; these things are the real obstacles for attaining that kind of proficiency. It takes ALOT of time and patience to attain this level of playing. But today's youth are totally not interested in a little hard work.:) I know b/c I'm a guitar teacher and I see it every day. Its really sad...
When I made me observation about 'influencing people to give up guitar' I was referring to the 1980's when he FIRST came on the scene. I was there. I remember the guys listening to Rising Force on tape, and in their frustration, selling their guitars and starting to play bass.
Why do you hate Malmsteen? Is it because you will NEVER be able to play like him or is it the facial expressions? Do you know that facial expressions, no matter how silly they look, are a direct expression of feeling of the music that is being played from the very soul? yngwie may be seen as repeating alot b/c of speed... when you play that good and that fast evrything may start to mesh(lol when you zone) but its all original i have look at every thing he has not copied 1 proggression it just may sound the same b/c of the speed you ,ay not be able to hear the notes and i beleive he was better when he was young

aristotle678, your observations are very valid. It seems as if we are now in a sort of 'musical dark ages'. A one in which, not only r most people functionally illiterate w/ regard to music notation, but they r also intolerant and ignorant when it comes to respecting other musical styles & respecting the identifying voice of particular musicians. Just w/ the case of YJM, he is now seen as "boring" or "repetitive"...as if he's suddenly supposed to reinvent himself and sound like someone else.

Whether u luv or h8 him, he inspired as many people to GIVE UP GUITAR as he did to actually pick it up & play. The reason is because,when he came on the scene, no one had even thought of playing w/ that style of phrasing or w/ his incredible technique. To some, he may now sound old & tired, but u must keep in mind he still sounds like Yngwie. He will always have a unique voice that anytime you listen to him, uimmediately know its him, & thats the greatest compliment u can ever give a musician.

Unique voice. Exactly. Malmsteen is Malmsteen b/c of his unique voice. Yet another quality (the other quality being improvisation) that is sorely missing in today's "copy cat" postmodern musicians. Thanks for pointing that out :)

I agree that "he inspired just as many people to give up guitar" but I would sooner blame that on today's distractions for the younger set. I.e., video games computers, ipods, cell phones; these things are the real obstacles for attaining that kind of proficiency. It takes ALOT of time and patience to attain this level of playing. But today's youth are totally not interested in a little hard work.:) I know b/c I'm a guitar teacher and I see it every day. Its really sad...

When I made me observation about 'influencing people to give up guitar' I was referring to the 1980's when he FIRST came on the scene. I was there. I remember the guys listening to Rising Force on tape, and in their frustration, selling their guitars and starting to play bass.

Do you know that facial expressions, no matter how silly they look, are a direct expression of feeling of the music that is being played from the very soul? It is called improvisation; this is a skill that is sorely lacking in today's "copy and paste" postmodern copycat musicians.

I tell you I agree, it just pisses me off how people bash Malmsteen because they hear many notes or because he looks funny. People like that are musicaly inferior and hasn't grown yet because there is good music if you can hear it. Of course he shredds but that's fun sometimes.
