When I first learned this piece I played it via alternate picking but later switched (rather laboriously I might add) to upstrokes only. It does affect the performance of the piece, more notably a staccato that works well with the delay.

My guess is that either he chose the upstroke for the staccato effect or maybe it originated as an exercise. Either way the piece is pretty awe-inspiring.

Im just a beginning guitarist but I agree, technically this isn't his most difficult song for sure. Its backbone is the timing and rythym of his picking. It has to be spot-on to make the song flow right. And good luck trying to uppick like he does. One of th emost beautiful songs I've ever heard.
