one way to fix that is to taake a qtip and tape it to the end of a small paint brush, open your disc tray on the xbox, pull the power cord on the xbox so that the tray will stay open, work the qtip into the system and spin the black thing that the dvd sets on mines been broke for months and that is how i fix mine, its caused by the dvd spin motor seezing up

DUDE I had this problem and fixed it. Actually all i did was clean it. I took it apart, took of the disc drive and took the lid off of the disk drive and saw dust and resin like gunk all over. I cleaned it and everywhere else with light alcohol, had to do a little scrapping, then i put it back together and it works perfectly - hope this helps

try tapping lightly on the top of the xbox as soon as you put the disc in but i don't now whether this can damage your xbox but it works almost all the time for me
sounds like your problem has something to do with the hardware inside the disk drive.. it may just need a little tweaking but it sounds too me like u need a new disk drive.. u could just buy a used xbox 360 from gamestop... swap out the disk drives and the chip.. then return it too gamestop and say that theres something wrong with it.. if you prefer illegal activity that is.. mua ha ha ha ha ha

Ok, First of to everyone one dumb enough to do the towel trick. Get a life! rrod Are easy to fix as are 99% of 360 problems. There are a thousand walkthroughs on how to fix them. That are simple enough that even an idiot that wants to wrap their system up in a towel can follow. Even if Microsoft fixes it for free after you Screw it up. It will not last long because you damaged everything else by being stupid. As for the Topic at hand there is a Screw in the middle of the disc clamp adjust it.
get a thick piece of paper foldit, so itwill slide inwith the tray, openthe tray, put the paper onthe disc, onthe left side ofthe tray. close the tray while urholding the paper onthe disc, the tray wont close all the wayso force the tray toclose. but dont stickthe paper allthe way injust halfway orso. uwill hear the disc starting up. and once the game starts, pull the paper bak out. I did it 2 mines and now after 5 times of doing so to get it started, I dont even have to use the paper anymore.
Hey guy's im bak I have a great Idea for people. that having a unplayable disc prob. this will only work if the disc isnt spinning at all, and u wont even have to open it up and fuck up ur xbox360. first the prob is the thing that spins isnt, so get a pencil and stand ur xbox up. and open ur tray. stick ur pencil in it and winggle the magnet and the spinner. but dont get to rough, stick the game inside and close it. u will hear it trying to spin, if you hear that and its still not working,
its used to cure the RROD (red ring of death) wrap your xbox in three towels and leave it on for about 30 mins. the rrod occurs because the soldering holding the cpu and shit to the caseing melts causing the sircuit boards to fall on eachother causing a hardware failure
the towel trick re melts the soldering and when left to cool it connects everything back up...for a short time only
in this guys case he can use the towel trick to give his 360 the red lights then microsoft have to repair it

no, no, no, dude...that is flashing you unplug ur big green chip replace the physical hardware,(ie;the motor, laser, n case) but not the chip that has your wait YOUR 360s firmware key its more or less a 360s fingerprint, wrong one and you could be banned from live...and rebuild...violla...

Ita because you might had warrenty still... They will do free repairs on any console with any problem... If my 360 broke now with the DVD drive then I would have to pay because im out of warrenty but if it broke now with 3RROD then it would be for free since it covred for 3 years.

the $90 dollars Microsoft charges. All you have to do is buy a new drive(all of the drives are about 30 bucks),that is the same drive you have in your xbox 360 now. Then on the drive there is a firmware chip. You just take that off your current drive and put it in the new one and then put the new drive in and your done. The xbox thinks its the same drive so you dont get banned from xbox live. You will void your warranty but mine was already over.

Give it the RROD put it in a really hot cramped place running for like 10+ hours and turn it off and you should get a rrod.

mine wont read discs either. Instead of saying "unplayable disc" it reverts back to "open tray" as though there is no disc in it! Its been with microsoft now for 3 weeks, which is longer than i've had it!! grrrr!
Everyone who wants to know what to do! If you have cleaned the pick up lense (laser) more than 5 times, then it's time to buy a new laser for the dvd drive or find a new drive that is the same model in your xbox360 (this way your chip settings are the same). Drives and lasers are cheap both under 60$ fix it and you won't have to leave your case open just to clean a f*%#ing laser. Oh by the way since the laser is weak dvd cleaners work for a few times until the laser don't read the dvd either.
it's your magnet. It isn't holding the disk when it trys to spin it. That's what the noise is. You need to open your box and DVD drive and glue the magnet back down. There are vids on youtube that show you how. jsut put in '360 unreadable disk'
check an see if the magnets are not together if they are that might be your problem so all you have to do if its that is just check because maybe you might not have to send it out if its only that. let me know if its that.
@ least u hear a noise when u pop it back in, mine does nothing, like the engine that spins the disc is busted. it was loud back in the day but now it is dead silent, called microsoft, and they will charge me $100 so i am xboxless and moneyless:(
I had the same problem as well. There are two possible simple problems that could be wrong. 1.) As probably many people have said; the metal washer within the DVD drive may be out of place. Watch the video by "Freonsmurf"
2.) Second your lens may just have some dirt on it and may need to be dusted "CAREFULLY" with a Q-tip; if done incorrectly you could destroy the lens instead of clean it. Also the soft black rubber washer on which the disc rest may also need to be cleaned. :)

mine does the same thing but i have found a way around it with mine.
-i use my 360 in vertical position.
-tilt 360 on 45 degree to right
-insert a dvd (not game)to start the drive(works for me)
-close wait prob wont work.
-remove dvd close turn off move to vertical position(i hear a click inside, drive i assume)
-now i quickly flick 360 with both hand to the right 45degrees to hear rattle move
-while in 45 degree position turn on open and insert dvd close wait for load

so the next moring,(yesterday) I woke up and saw that I actually melted the sides a little bit. so now what? I'm pissed now my shits ugly! then I said fukit, Im calling 1-800-4MYXBOX. they asked wat the problem was. so since I didnt have the red rings, I decided to lie! so I told them that my xbox is making a scracth noise on the inside, and I can smell metal burning, and it get hot for no reason its in a spot that cool it shouldnt be getting hot and now its starting to melt.act like its serious

o.k man let me tellu wat todo! I have the same problem. I tried to get the red rings also, but with the newer xbox's its almost impossible it! I tried everything! from rapping it with towel's to rapping it in bags and even putting it in the freezer! so my last idea was to put it by a heater! the i left in next to it for like 30 on both sides whil it was standing up! and guest wat only the 2lights each time! FUUUCK!

I Have the exact same thing, and i watched sum youtube video on how to fix it. But it only temporarily fixed it. and we ordered a new dvd drive and that one came not workin. Absolute rip-off

sounds like a jammed motor, u can hear the stepping of the coils in the motor, try to open the unit and look at the drive for some ubstruction

my xbox has that problem but also lasts 5 minutes befor the xbox kicks in and says it cant read the disk. of course its a month out of its shitty 1 year warrenty. my ps2 however has lasted 7 years with no problems. if i ever get to choose between sony and microsft il be buying the ps4 anyday

go to ebay buy a new hitachi DVD drive for 360
U UNPLUG THE DRIVE THROW IT AWAY REPLUG THE NEW ONE CLOSE THE 360s CASE AND VIOLLA only a $20 fix if u know what ur doing...

no, no, no, dude...that is flashing you unplug ur big green chip replace the physical hardware,(ie;the motor, laser, n case) but not the chip that has your wait YOUR 360s firmware key its more or less a 360s fingerprint, wrong one and you could be banned from live...and rebuild...violla...

ok i realy need help ok. now what i did was i have a toshiba samsung ms25, and i bought the same one off ebay,then what i did is replace my old laser and with my new one, and it worked for 1 day then started the same problems, by saying open tray and not reading it. so do u think its the laser or my drive? and idn how to fix this so i was thinking of buying a whole new xbox. so can u please help me?

Ita because you might had warrenty still... They will do free repairs on any console with any problem... If my 360 broke now with the DVD drive then I would have to pay because im out of warrenty but if it broke now with 3RROD then it would be for free since it covred for 3 years.

You can fix your drive for around $30 instead of
the $90 dollars Microsoft charges. All you have to do is buy a new drive(all of the drives are about 30 bucks),that is the same drive you have in your xbox 360 now. Then on the drive there is a firmware chip. You just take that off your current drive and put it in the new one and then put the new drive in and your done. The xbox thinks its the same drive so you dont get banned from xbox live. You will void your warranty but mine was already over.

i had a similar problem recently, where as my xbox360 is reading games as DVD Videos and telling me to put the disc in an xbox360 console.
i phoned the number in the warranty booklet that came with teh console, and they sent me packaging slips and said it would be repaired free of charge.
my console is over 2 years old, december 2006 i got it. i asked how much it would cost on the phone and they said it will be free of charge.
give them a call back they may just repair it for you.

My Hitachi drive is screwed also...
It will play DVD's and PES2008 OK...
But it takes about an hour of opening and closing the tray for it to read other games...
Also just dl'ed COD4 maps :(

Give it the RROD put it in a really hot cramped place running for like 10+ hours and turn it off and you should get a rrod.
and they'll take it and swap you for a refurb or a new one if you lucky most with an hdmi port and a couple month of gold membership for live as a sorry gift.

dude, mine does the same exact thing. it stopped working when it sounded like it was chewing my disk so i turned it off and w.e....so then i turned it back on and it does the same thing urs does...i thought maybe something was jammed on the inside so as courious as i am i opened it up and found nothing :( my warranty was already up...microsoft said they will still fix it though but i dont wanna spend 100 bucks to send it in...so i bought a PS3 :]

mine wont read discs either. Instead of saying "unplayable disc" it reverts back to "open tray" as though there is no disc in it! Its been with microsoft now for 3 weeks, which is longer than i've had it!! grrrr!

Everyone who wants to know what to do! If you have cleaned the pick up lense (laser) more than 5 times, then it's time to buy a new laser for the dvd drive or find a new drive that is the same model in your xbox360 (this way your chip settings are the same). Drives and lasers are cheap both under 60$ fix it and you won't have to leave your case open just to clean a f*%#ing laser. Oh by the way since the laser is weak dvd cleaners work for a few times until the laser don't read the dvd either.

it's your magnet. It isn't holding the disk when it trys to spin it. That's what the noise is. You need to open your box and DVD drive and glue the magnet back down. There are vids on youtube that show you how. jsut put in '360 unreadable disk'

@ least u hear a noise when u pop it back in, mine does nothing, like the engine that spins the disc is busted. it was loud back in the day but now it is dead silent, called microsoft, and they will charge me $100 so i am xboxless and moneyless:(

I had the same problem as well. There are two possible simple problems that could be wrong. 1.) As probably many people have said; the metal washer within the DVD drive may be out of place. Watch the video by "Freonsmurf"
2.) Second your lens may just have some dirt on it and may need to be dusted "CAREFULLY" with a Q-tip; if done incorrectly you could destroy the lens instead of clean it. Also the soft black rubber washer on which the disc rest may also need to be cleaned. :)

dude.. the disk could be sctrached at some points or it coul dbe dirty.. or it is a brand new disk and nothing is wrong with it.. call microsoft and hopefully they will help u.. good luck
