The info said that this dude was an athlete at Boston College, but it didnt say what sport he played. Judging by his leg strength, i gotta say hes probably a hockey player.
Michael Boyle has the safest record and the safest practice in the Strength and Conditioning field. Most times that's why he get's crap for. So to post that this is not safe is ridiculous. If you have a question, go to his website, and ask him. It's $1 for a weeks trial. Way too many freaking people here pretending they know what they're talking about.
Doing 1RM quarter squats will show higher readings when standing on force plates but this does not mean it is a superior exercise.
I agree with the reduced load on the back, however there are questions about whether the lop-sided loading, while less, is just as unhealthy for the back... as you can clearly see there is a lot of lumbar movement here.
I'd be a little hesitant in removing the back squat from my athletes program when those such as Poliquin and King are such big fans.
@fitstrong1 I quit reading or listening to Poliquin years ago. He's too far out there. He's became a joke in the real S&C world. Why does some of his methods work? Ask Victor Conte.
I think this is a fantastic display of strength, my only query with the suggestion that the leg recieves the same or more load than a regular squat.
Does anyone know if Mike has compared it to 1RM lifts squatting to a depth where the same amount of knee and hip flexion as the BFESS occurs, and not to the 1RM of a full depth olympic squat? Whilst still quite deep, surely a squat to the levels of flexion occurring above will be considerably higher than a full depth squat oly weightlifting style
If those are plates are the same type of bumper plates, then that is definately NOT 225. Looks like 155 or maybe 185. The plates are not the same size.
Actually he played at Boston University. Currently with the Nashville Predators.

It's so much more complicated than that. Do a search for a t-nation article called Build Bigger Legs One Leg at a Time.

The evidence indicates it would hit the legs harder. Research bilateral deficit.

So you are really trying to tell me that this hits his legs as hard as a 450lb squat would?
