Man... I wish the ECW Invasion angle started when Lawlor pulled these angles. Seriously. Not even an invasion angle. Maybe like a promotion war. If Vince was smart, he would've seen this was the perfect set up for a nice angle.
This feud was a joint effort between WWF, ECW and USWA. At this time, WWF was also doing angles with ECW (they did a special "spotlight" show on RAW one night with them from the Hammerstein Ballroom in NYC). This was Lawler's promotion and they were primarily a WWF developmental territory. Vince was at that time helping to bankroll ECW and maybe make them a "farm team" as well to aid WWF in the "Monday Night War".
@HipnosisV1Games Actually, USWA was at that time a WWF "farm team" just like today's Florida Championship Wrestling promotion and the earlier OVW and Heartland promotions. When WWE has a wrestler that they want to get a look at for a while they send him there. Most of the current WWE roster under 30 years of age and all of the various NXT guys came through FCW. For clarification of this feud check my other post.
ECW made wrestling popular when it was unpopular(a difficult thing to do obviously). It is where the big promotions got their ideas from to be successful(eg Steve Austin ripping off the Sandmans beer gimmick). The WWE really screwed up a good thing here.
Even the USWA fans were chanting the name of a rival promotion...not saying that meant USWA sucked, but rather how popular was ECW?
How hard would it have been to let the ECW re-launch continue under Paul Heyman? And Vinnie Mac went & f***ed it up.
"Let me think. I'll bring back something that was popular, and take away every element that made it popular in the first place. THAT will ensure its continued popularity!"
@DaveInOCNJ That may not be entirely the case. Sadly, the USWA was on its last legs here. So by this time the only people who watched it on a regular basis were pro wrestling diehards who likely traded tapes and watched the syndicated ECW show every week. So it is unlikely that those were pure USWA fans sitting in the audience, but rather overall fans who were into the ECW/USWA invasion angle. The problem is, that didn't translate well over the entire Memphis territory.
@Bravesrtops Sure he has every right to run his company how he wants. But when he fails to pick up on what the fans so obviously want to see (as he's done so many times), that's being a dumbass.
A good feud between Dreamer and Lawler 10 years ago. It also spilled over with Tazz at One Night Stand 2006. Lawler took a chance entering the ECW Arena.
I thought about this for a while... But I wish there was someone that could tell me why this guy is NOT making s shit load of money as an announcer or a commentator...
@pugnaciousVOID I know this is a comment about a 2 year old post, but I had to say this: If you're referring to the TV commentator, his name is Lance Russell and he was one of the legends of wrestling TV commentary from the '60s through the '80s. He worked the old NWA Memphis promotion as well as various other Southern promotions. He's almost as revered as Gordon Solie and Jim Ross among wrestling announcers.
Misses the USWA... Misses ECW... Misses competition in wrestling.

@bvd1022
USWA and ECW were not competition for WWF or WCW.
