My dad built one like this but he used the vacuum canister and lined it with refractory clay. On kingsford charcoal he gets it hot enough to melt his steel crucible if he's not careful. mostly he melts down old aluminum to make shelf brackets and stuff
@bighole1818 just an fyi the charcoal u buy in stores is not good to use for knife making and other things..can u use it yes,but that stuff has fillers and such thats not good with metals..u can make your own charcoal by burning down wood..the black char'd wood you let cool then rinse off let dry and there u go...burns really good..
@atwas911 at what point in this video does he "admit publicly" to stealing a railroad spike? Please post a link to the law forbidding the use or salvage of a rr spike like this. There may be such a law, but I don't believe it is enfoced considering the thousands of knives that are forged from them annually.
@Lancaster051: ...Can copper, as in old UK pennies be melted easily. I would have though you need to keep the air (oxygen) away from the molden metal. How are bronze castings made?

@atwas911 you sir are a shit starting dumbfuck..where in the world did u hear him say he want up to a railroad and take anything?..btw i find rr spikes all the time in the streams when im panning and sluicing for gold...so am i breaking the law?did'nt know a railroad ran through a stream...libs go fig....
Verry cool man , I am going to head over to the salvage yard. I would make one every weekend, would probly pay for itself in a couple months. Awesom Thanks
@webbcityglassman Thanks for the info. My buddys forge is a old Harrow disc, its big but I dont have the room for that. I like the anvil too., I am looking for one.
@Alehkhs well thanks ,its a 30 gallon barrel and i cut the bottom out the right diametor to accept the brakedrum and cut out the side to access the dumpcap it fits tight and makes it realy stable and portable, i thought of useing the barrel instead of cynderblocks just by6 chance and ive been real pleased how professionalit looks
You worked so hard on this and I know how much you enjoy it. You make amazing knifes and I can't wait to learn to do this with you, we are gonna have a blast!
i dont have a video on how too but ,its pretty simple ,i think its about 16 inches of mildsteel 3 1/2 to4 inches wide ,fold in half cut triangles on open end down to 11/2 strip the rest of the way ,twist the spike first make the eye then forge weld the blade try it with paper or clay first ,ill try to make a video sometime on how too ,thanks for watching
That looks like BBQ briquettes, those are mostly sawdust and other filler. Use real coal/coke or even charcoal for a better result. And it's usually cheaper. Look up a dealer in the phone book, sometimes they'll deliver free if you're on their route to another place.
I like the set up but you could have shown a little on how you put it togethor and not just taping after the fact. still good job!! I built mine out of an old steel truck rim and welded a steel plate to the bottom.
haha thats awesome... when i first heard of brake drum forges... i probly should have looked up pics.. cuz i made mine out of a semi brake drum... its deep and huge.. but it works for me.. then i went and saw one of these and was like oh that makes more sense.. oh well.... :) nice knife thou! i just got my forge going today!!
"Freak hot... I guess that's what it's supposed to do..." hahaha, that's awesome! I totally can't wait to get my setup put together. The vaccuum cleaner idea is a good idea too... I might have to look into that. Good job on the knife too.
I'm using a shop vac as a blower. Seems to tolerate the dimmer dropping the current. I used a house vacuum from the roadside. Most throw out because brush head is done in. Usually the rest still works. Hope this helps.
Sweet! I like what you did with the barrel, makes it look nice. I see you used galvanized. could you find any black iron? Knife looks good too. I haven't posted any more videos lately because I've been tied up in my new project. I bought a welder and I'm making a Mad Max bumper for my new Cavalier.
What kind of coal are you using? Could I use just regular old grill coal?

@atwas911 how do u know he stole it from the tracks. There are thousands of rr spikes just sitting next to the tracks
kodyokeefe 11 months ago 3
Word of caution: It is a federal offense to use/steal/salvage or otherwise take any piece of "Rail Road" steel.
You have just admitted publicly, and submitted video proof of yourself doing so..
atwas911 11 months ago
@atwas911 BS you can buy "rail road spikes" from the hardware store.. they are just essentially giant iron nails
