I completely disagree with the whole addiction being a disease model. Compulsive behavior is not a disease! Sex stills controls these peoples lives, because they are constantly thinking about how to avoid it. Someone should explain to them they need to practice self control, not complete abstinence (unless thats what they truly want).

These people are genetically predisposed to be addicts. 2. Add in some childhood trauma that they cope with by using and they're off to the races.

By any definition nicotine is a mind-altering drug, so to say cigarettes are different is just ignoring the fact that they aren't. More people die of smoking than all drugs put together! More quit cocaine and heroin on their own than alcohol! To say compulsive behavior is a disease is scientifically unfounded, not to mention there is no empirical evidence! To say people are predisposed to abusing substances or any other impulsive behavior again lacks scientific backing and is beyond naive!
