in the audition, idina cracked on one of the last notes in D.G, she swore loudly, then nailed it the second time. the producers liked her feisty spirit.

i agree that they probably did factor in idina's past with 'rent', but i think you're over estimating the fame she got from it. within the theatre community she might have been recognized, but outside...not at all. she'd probably be more famous by being the wife of taye diggs.

apparently they say that winnie holtzman who was there during the audition didn't know who idina was. Joe Mantello did know her from Rent but not Holtzman so it's a little of both

i doubt it because they chose her because of rent, if she wasnt in rent i doubt she would have gotten the role, i hate to say this because she is amazing but, during her audition her voice cracked and i highly doubt they would choose her after that.

She's Stepahnie Block. She did Elphaba on tour, I think. I saw her as Liza Minelli in The Boy from Oz and she was AWSOME!

She was in the first touring cast, but this was done when it hadn't even gone to Broadway yet. I think she was still an understudy then and had a part in the chorus or something? I know Idina's been in it from the beginnning.

Stephanie was Stephen Schwartz's original choice for Elphaba. He wrote the music around her, but, ultimately, the producers wanted someone with more broadway experience to play Elphaba, because she's such an enormous anchor to the show. Idina was brought in to replace Stephanie, and Steph was offered the standby. She did it for San Fran and then left for Boy From Oz.
