  • the dude with the plait is super hot

  • did you people even watch this movie or are you just commenting?

  • BEST MOVIE EVER

  • yeah its all rotoscoping for those of you who think its all animation. and yeah this is one of my childhood favorites, too bad its racist as shit. (the dog men)

  • This film was made using the process of rotoscoping, in which scenes were shot in live action and then traced onto animation cels.

  • Dark Souls?

  • the chick has big parts

  • 20 up this is the best Comic

  • he maaaaaaaaaaaaaaan

  • Dark Wolf = Rexxar from Warcraft?

  • @LegacyBobo LMAO, kid, this epic animation it's from 1983!

  • @GustavoEBarriga hahahahaha

  • used to be my favorite animated movie, we had it on tape and when i was young i used to secretly watch it even tho it was kinda a movie from my parents :] so awesome.

  • frank frazetta had a big impact in this movie not just ralph bakshi. best animation ever. we can tell who is a man and who is a girl. their eyes are normal too. sorry but i hate anime, stupid nonsense japanese cartoons...

  • WHY HASN'T ANYONE TOLD ME ABOUT THIS ONE?!!! WHYYYYYYYYYYYY DO I FIND THIS IN 2012?! YOU MOTHERFUCKERS......... Cool vid, btw! Thx for uploading! :D

  • why the hell dont they make animated movies as cool as this any more

  • @kaligula785 Because they're too thought provoking

  • @7ay Exactly.

  • @kaligula785 same reason cat video's get the most views on youtube.

  • @kaligula785 Nobody ever made movies as cool as Ralph Bakshi's.

  • That was a good movie

  • with this animation it will be a great porn

  • Why is everyone naked

  • @Cammerlot because it set in the ice age, when man and neandrtal lived side by side.

  • Frank Frazetta was genious.

  • @HBMHD I guess because return of the jedi most likely won for best visuals that year. If anything american pop should have won for best visuals. I mean have you seen it? Its animation like youve never seen before.

  • I've never seen this film, but the animation looks SO good... hmmm i wonder why it doesn't have any award... i mean, the story may be bad (my guess), but why it never won an award for the animation's quality?

  • @HBMHD It's rotoscoped...

  • I was born in 1983, how come i have never heard of this movie untill now?

  • Wow... I wonder how much paper they used... let's see, 1.44 x .... OMG

  • This movie was made in 1983, yet this movie hadd animation that good? AWESOME!!

  • the guy with the mask looks like Rexxar wtf :P

  • @Shetyre Warcraft took a lot of inspiration from other fantasy material including Fire and Ice, I am pretty sure they are quite open about having Dark Wolf, the character in this movie, being the sort of template for Rexxar.

  • @OldBoy968

indeed just read about him on wowwiki

seems that hes a little easteregg for dark wolf

  • wow this animation is crazy good

  • Robert rodriguez wants to remake this movie completely in live action. It ain't gonna work. I'm glad there are people who still recognize Ralph bakshi but the remake is just gonna be another over the top fantasy film without the unique rotoscoping.

  • Are these the same people who made "Heavy Metal"? many similar sound effects and the animation style looks the same.

  • 17 people are servants of Necron

  • Superb movie.

  • beautiful animation. Unfortunately its mostly, if not fully, rotoscoped.

  • @AhmadPhilips I don't think it mattered that this one was rotoscoped... Its how rotoscoping should have been used. I think they just need to add more depth by adding shading to the animated characters.

  • @Luciffrit rotoscope at its finest: look at it go! it fits the movie very well, monsters integrate perfectly and combined with the crazy vision and badass soundtrack it contributes to a pretty awesome overall result no? i really love the moves and slow motion bits, its such great stuff.

  • Hey I'm looking for an old-timey animated movie... No idea if it's Bakshi or Rankin & Bass, but the characters are a bit more cartoony and there's a sort of winged, fairy/pixy-like female character that at one point gets shot with an arrow and dies. That's all I remember, watched it as a kid right before my family was going out and that's the only part I saw. Anyone know of anything like what I'm talkin about?

  • @Mundane05

    Wizards maybe?

  • Alpha as fuck

  • I loved this movie, ESPECIALLY the rotoscope effects!

The animation reminds me of Conan, He-Man, and (in some areas), Johnny Quest. The only problems I had were the skimpy outfits on the characters.

    But still, the movie's awesome!

  • Frank Frazetta,m inspisation....

    total genious!!!!

    aawsomness!!!!

  • Dark Wolf is Batman.

  • mortal kombat

  • SO CHEESY IT HURTS.

  • Bal-Sagoth - To Dethrone The Witch-Queen Of Mytos K'unn, thats how i found out about this movie!

  • im looking this 1995

  • I look at this and it makes me think (No offense, but still.) "Have today's animators become lazy? Have we so little budget for today's animated movies?" The animation is so smooth and so natural, the makers of this movie are masters, makes me wish someone stood up and made something like this today still.

  • @Hionimi I don't know -- the background paintings are beautiful in this film, but they are of such a different level of quality (because they didn't have to be re-done 24 times per second) that the characters stand out jarringly against it. The slew of traditionally-animated Disney films from the '90s look far more natural.

Modern animated films are heavy on the CGI, but that doesn't mean they can't look natural: Cameron's "Avatar" was 90% animated, after all.

  • @Hionimi That's because they used rotoscoping... And anyway, avatar wasn't exactly about being animation or not... even though i personally think it's both boring as hell and has a quite inocent plot... but the thing is that you are trying to compare a Live Action movie with CGI enviroments agains't an animated feature... Not in the same league... or sport anyway XD

  • FRANK FRAZETTA!! Real genius

  • Does anyone else kind of get the feeling that the movie alludes to Darkwolf being Nekrons father? Just listen to the way he speaks about his mother and how far he goes to put an end to him it almost seems like he is trying to right a mistake he made... Some might say there is no character growth but they must not be watching and just listening. The actions speak much louder than words here..then again when the words are spoken..they do get ones attention.

  • Great great movie. Gotta love that wolf guy. Check out my giant killer robot project vids. Teigra mmmmmm.

  • Now thats animation!

  • @atlan61 have you seen the adventures of tintin trailer i actually thought it was real during the beginning now that's animation

  • @CosmicFist Thanks. I did, your not kidding. that was awsome as well, however when dose animation, become reality? and if they can do this kind of work....that looks real and life like, how can it be called animation?

  • @atlan61 You realize it's rotoscoped, right?

  • @hannahthehiccup I do. Just like snow white I think rotoscope is cool.

  • @hannahthehiccup yep. just like the 1920s snow white movie.

  • @atlan61 Exactly.

  • @atlan61 Snow White was 1930's not 1920's

  • @atlan61 No it isnt it Rotoscoping.

  • @wadetalon its rotoscoped

  • @atlan61 NAH GO WATCH ANY JAPANESE ANIMATION FILM THAT'S ANIMATION

  • this is streaming on netflix

  • my dad has the tape of this. its been so long since ive seen this and i wana watch it again ^.^

  • It's on Netflix Instant Streaming for those who are interested.

  • Watching this movie made me realize this is the Proto-Avatar the Background and everything in the world looks amazing but the characters are bland, lifeless and ugly shade of fleshy/grey.

EXACTLY LIKE AVATAR. Except James gurney and Frank Frazetta rock

  • Watching this movie made me realize this is the Proto-Avatar the Background and everything in the world looks amazing but the characters are bland, lifeless and ugly shade of fleshy/grey.

EXACTLY LIKE AVATAR. Except James gurney and Frank Frazetta rocks

  • @Mousypunk

Well both Avatar and this movie has similar techniques of rotoscoping

  • wow this looks older then me

  • That smooth animation.

They just don't make em like they use to.

  • I'll miss you, Frank. You drew the hunkiest guys, the sexiest babes, and the best snake-peril scenes.

  • @AungUnElric

Me too i adore it but LOTR was his worst, do you agree that the rotoscoping animation techniques are similar to Robert Zemeckls's mocap animation films, Final Fantasy or Avatar only as a more old school traditional version? if you liked this movie, check out Princess Mononoke for a similar adult animated fantasy adventure.

  • @Johnlindsey289 Yeh, motion-capture is essentially the same thing as rotoscoping just with a different medium.

I'd still say I prefer LOTR over Fire and Ice just for the sole reason that it still had the charm and epicness of J.R.R. Tolkiens books. But I do agree that LOTR wasn't Bakshis finest hour. My personal favorite is Wizards, followed by Fritz the Cat then Heavy Traffic.

  • @Johnlindsey289

I read Robert Rodriguez is aquiring the rights to this movie and is interested in a live action remake...

  • @metallic773 And he's got Bakshi in on it, too. It's a Sin City thing all over again. I wouldn't doubt Rod'll give Bakshi a directorial credit again. It'll be either be the shit, or plain ol' shit. My money's on the former.

  • @joethetimelord

    nothing beats the original...

  • @metallic773 For the most part I agree. I can, however, imagine that the remake'll do well.

  • The axe dude looks like a cross between Conan and Batman.

    I approve.

  • @Filby or like dotA Beastmaster

  • I'd love if they did a Conan film like this.

  • @Cybopath Agreed

  • Does anyone know what happened to the Music Vid of this movie?

  • @jmatty72 neat

  • RIP Frank. Truly one of the best artists ever.

  • 00:34 Rexxar????????

  • I love those type of animations

  • Why isn't animation this life-like anymore?

  • @poopikins

Does the rotoscoping remind you of the same techniques that Robert Zemeckis used in his animated Mocap trilogy and James Cameron's Avatar?

  • @Johnlindsey289 Talkin bout cartoons mane

  • @poopikins

If you liked this one check out Heavy Metal, Princess Mononoke and Wizards. seen those? and what is your opinion on rotoscopic Mocap animation like in Avatar, Polar Express, Beowulf or Christmas Carol?

  • @Johnlindsey289 Those are great, but I prefer the 2D style look.

  • @Johnlindsey289 They aren´t exactly the same techniques. Rotoscoping is handrawing (tracing) upon the source material. What is used in 3D animation is called motion capture and it saves movement parameters of certain key points of the real moving object or person in order to translate them to equivalent key points in a computer generated image.

  • @teddyrocker

And do you think this stays out of the uncanny valley?

  • @Johnlindsey289 Uncanny valley?

If you´re talking about effort, as an amateur animator I tell you that rotoscoping is way harder to do than motion capture since you have to manually trace each photogram (12 to 25 per second depending on the movement quality you want to achieve). Using motion capture you just create the virtual figure, add the parameter values, and the computer does the rest by itself. In short, what Bakshi did here had much more merit than modern animation.

  • @teddyrocker

But do you think this does better than Polar Express and has no dead eye syndrome? Did you think Avatar conquered the Mocap dead eye effect? I think the upcoming TinTin should also conquer the dead eye effect like WETA's efforts has and will make cartoon characters rotoscopic people that are belivable without the dead eyes.

  • @Johnlindsey289 I think that to pretend animation figures to look exactly like real ones is as senseless as to pretend an oil painting to look as a photography. To distort reality is the goal of animation, to give things an appearance they don´t have in the real world. It´s good to try to be as close as possible but if you make animation indistinguishable from live action you´re just making a technical achievement not an artistic one. The art is in how you manage that difference.

  • @teddyrocker In other words, the "uncanny valley" isn´t sorted making more realistic figures but using wisely the "unreal" factor.

  • Wow, anyone see the cover of the blu-ray? I did NOT expect this lol.

  • the animation here looks fucking drop dead gorgeous. can't believe this was made in '83

  • It's like HE-MAN for....men!

  • is it only me that thinks tegra looks like a,you know

  • was this a childrens movie???

  • @piranhafish22 i mean the girl mine as well be naked i mean jeez

  • @piranhafish22

well, all the men in the movie where almost naked aswell.

Nudity doesn´t scare kids, gore, horror, violence ect. does. And female nudity is not "scarier" than male.

  • this movie looks fuckin BEAST!

  • 0:10 in, and hes shooting his load.

  • liked this? well just check on the TRIBUTE look for "The real Frank Frazetta Tribute"

  • The Princess Mononoke of the 80's! same kind of animated fantasy epic for adults and cult movie as well like that one.

  • FFFUUUU

  • Traditional animation that looks as smooth as if it was computer-aided.

    Remarkable.

  • @Totema1 It looks smooth because every shot is rotascoped...basically traced from live action film, there's not art in that?!

  • What the hell is wrong with this ice mage dude at 0:06 to 0:10?

    He goes apeshit!

  • @Andr286 In the actual movie, I kid you not, it totally looks like he's rubbing one out through that whole sequence.

And then when he climaxes, white ice explodes all over everyone, killing them, and he goes all limp and pants.

I wish I was making this up.

  • Damn, where did adventure flicks go? This movie was brutal, sexy, and downright awesome. Animated? Yes. But show me a film with these kinds of balls nowadays. Won't happen. CG and special effects are not a substitute for badassery. RIP Frazetta.

  • @saucedr Irreversible, Martyrs, Requiem for a Dream, Oldboy, etc. I could go on. xP

  • @AliG4life: Never seen Martyrs or Oldboy, but Requiem and Irreversible were douchey shock films. I liked both, but they are what they are. Lipstick on a pig and all that.

  • @saucedr Your opinion on Requiem and Irreversible doesn't change the fact that there are plenty of movies out there with ''those kind of balls''. That's all.

  • @AliG4life I was humoring you but you insist on being douche fuqwit. If you can't see the difference between what Fire and Ice was trying to accomplish and films like Requiem (not a current film, by the way you ignorant fuck) then get out of this discussion. Hold on, where is my douche smiley button? Oh that's right I don't have one on my keyboard as I didn't purchase it in the douche section of the film-school book store. Let me guess, you are 19 and are aspiring to be a director? Asshole.

  • @saucedr Hm, you're acting like a little girl. Way too sensitive.

I'm 23, by the way. And not aspiring to be a director.

  • @AliG4life Wrong. Like you, I had nothing better to do yesterday than fuck around on Youtube. And drink a shit load of rum. That's what vacation is for.

  • @saucedr Hehe, true. x)

  • i love these old animations the movements seem so much more realistic ! !

  • @Crims0nFlow3r Rotascoped...traced from live action film.

  • AAAAHAHAHAHAHA I used to watch this when I was little........ that fucking high pitched musicc tooooo

  • Ok...So the movie is about the keepers of fire and ice? The blonde guy looks gay, and it seems really likke a totally clichè-like movie. Is it?

  • Gotta love how accurate this trailer is. Larn spends the whole length of it fleeing in terror.

  • Ok, so everyone be very honest, was Nekron (sp?) gay? Seriously, as I was watching it with that mind set it all was put together in a way of why he acted the way he did and everything about him was pointing to it. Tell me what you think and if i was just overthinking it.

    Thanks

  • Awesome adult animated fantasy epic i always enjoyed since i was 12 when i bought it on video back in 93 at age 12 after not seeing it in so long since i was 5 watching it on video with my big brothers. Teegra was a total animated knock-out like Taarna or Lady Amalthea from The Last Unicorn. One of my animated favorites!

  • When was this made?

  • @Farfeb 1983

  • the animation is amazing. the music is great..the dialogues are painfully laughable and the plot is a bit random. still worth watching for it's earie atmosphere

  • @tarkeke

Does the rotoscoping techniques int his movie remind you of an earlier version of the same techniques used in Avatar or Beowulf?

  • @Johnlindsey289 I've never watched beowulf. and only watched avatar once=P I didn't like that movie too much..the plot was kinda disappointing imo. so I don't remember too much about the effects xD

  • this movie is avaliable in bluray now

  • IN COMBINATION:

  • atak jews

  • Damn! The Animation Is Unreal! I can't believe this was even Hand Drawn or Photo drawn!

I was born in 1987......Dammit! Why couldn't I have been born eariler to see this flick!

  • this movie was the best gotta get the movie somewhere.

  • This is still my favorite animation movie! I made an animation movie short after being inspired by this movie. I posted it as an answer to this video.

  • @Stebilios

It is an awesome cult animated classic, if you like this one you should check out these similar movies: Princess Mononoke, Heavy Metal, The Last Unicorn, The Flight of Dragons, The Dark Crystal, Willow, conan The Barbarian, Wizards, Lightyears (aka Gandahar), The Princess Bride, The Secret of NIMH, Ninja Scroll, Dragonheart, Excalibur and The Black Cauldron. Seen those?

  • @Johnlindsey289 Yes, I've seen some of those. I'll have to check the others out as well. Thanks for the tip :).

  • @Stebilios

    Which ones you seen?

  • @Johnlindsey289 I've seen Heavy Metal, Willow, conan The Barbarian, Wizards, Ninja Scroll and Dragonheart. Not sure about Excalibur :).

  • @Stebilios

Have you seen Thor? Excellent fantasy epic that is fun and a throw back to those 80's sword and sorcery movies.

  • @Johnlindsey289 No I haven't but sounds good. I'll have to check it out.

  • @Stebilios

Does the rotoscoping in this movie remind you of the similar rotoscoping techniques used in Robert Zemeckis's Christmas Carol and Beowulf to James Cameron's Avatar?

  • @Johnlindsey289 Not really, no. Mostly it reminds me of other drawn animations like Lord of The Rings and Heavy Metal. They use rotoscoping in new movies too but it's a bit different from the technique that they used in Fire and Ice those others.

  • If a crossbreed of Avatar: the Last Airbender and Conan the Barbarian had a baby with Heavy Metal this would be the result... Then again I must have no idea what I'm talking about since Avatar appeared long after this.

  • @bertchtree91

Yes it does feel like Avatar The Last Airbender and Conan with HM and don't forget Princess Mononoke as well

  • its 3 quid on amazon

  • BAAAAAAAAAKSHIIIIII

  • this movie is great, jews get chopped in two w axes !!

  • @ChixRChattel It's a made-up story. There are no jewish people in the Fire and Ice movie...

  • amazing animation

  • Dark Wolf is the MAN!!

  • back when animated movies were more then just that they were works of art!

  • Comment removed

  • this movie was AWESOME! loved it...ended weird...but otherwise awesome!

  • among the many qualities of this underrated masterpiece, still amazed how sexy the female characters were designed specially tygra, a piece of art of sensuality, computers will never be able to offer that.

  • @carig121

I agree Tygra is up there with Taarna from Heavy Metal and Cheetara from Thundercats in terms of sexy female warrior chicks. CGI can do animated chicks justice like Avatar or Beowulf's Grendel for example.
