  • wonderful. I assume this is SLO on the central coast?

  • i play da basson in 6th grad and having a concert coming up any advice on wat i shoud do?????????????l

  • didnt know mclovin dyed his hair blond! or play bassoon for that matter..............

  • lol the violins should be in tune or not? xDXDXDXD

  • Concerto for 2 Bassoons and Orchestra by J.B. Vanhal, not a hard piece, but lots of fun to play. To the girl, your tone is clear, but maybe play a bit smoother. To the boy, intonation on several notes is a problem. Overall, you two blend together pretty well. Keep up the good work!

  • needs to be a touch faster in my opinion. The girl is definitely a better player...

  • Sol Schoenbach - Concert Piece for Bassoon and String Orchestra, by Burrill Phillips, 1952:

    watch?v=wCHUpEt33As

    thanks and regards

  • dude i just jizzed my pants they are amazing esspesially those bassoonists i hope to be as good as them

  • lehetne gyorsabb...

  • Someone tell that guy to sit up...

  • the 2nd bassoonist should try to get a more sombre sound from his bassoon. if he can.

  • I dont really knoww muchh aboutt thee bassoon 'cause i play the flutee .. butt fromm wahh ii cann se its a quiett instrument xx

  • @MrsJasperHale1963 yes and no, the bassoon can be loud'ish but is has an exallent pp. witha great sombre sound(the 2 bassoonist needs work) but flute players make exellent bassoonists, because they don't have a fixed embrochure such as oboists , or clarinets , etc. That's what i do play bassoon but stay with flute as well so ..... join us. lol

  • Vanhal Concerto for 2 Bassoons

  • i have an old horst basson wonder what its worth .. lol

  • what song is this?

  • Girl has more musicality

  • what on is this?

  • I was taking lessons from George Adams at the time. He's good friends with Alan Fox, so yeah, they hooked me up. Also had an old Heckel bocal for it that I had found ( it was bent and had a split seam) and got it repaired by Paul Tucci just a few weeks before he died.

  • please... you are in time for get another job..

  • Fox bell. I play on the same (or similar) model. Great playing.

  • These guys sound amazing...

My bassoon is a school instrument, so it doesn't sound all that good, but I'm hoping to take private lessons soon. Oh my goodness....this is good.

  • What model is it? I use a Fox 601

  • Wonderful playing!

  • Alot of the morons who criticise kids who have wooden bassoons seem to forget about the concept of "renting" an instrument. They're not necessarily the owners- I seriously doubt many parents would be willing to buy their child an instrument costing in excess of £15,000 unless they were some form of prodigy, in which case they are deserving of such an instrument.

  • Yep, bassoon is called fagott in swedish too.

So it's good that i learned the english word for it. Or I could be walking around saying I played fagott =P

You guys are really good bassoonists =D

  • so funny, in german, basson is called "fagott" xD

  • Yeah. Mature...

  • @ViZahra oh man your so cool douche

  • Congratulations to both of the soloists. Very nice sound and intonation, and good chamber music.

Only one constructive critic, I understand that you are beginning to play the instrument, but it is not a good Idea to stay long time playing in public sited. When you try to play stand, PLEASE DONT USE THE NECK STRAPS!!!!!!!!! use a back one like a cross or a diagonal one, NEVER THE NECK ones like sax players use. It will KILL your spine/back/arms etc...

  • And why in the world would it not be a good idea to play seated?

You also mean a harness, not a "cross or diagonal strap". Could you try to sound more intelligent?

  • "Could you try to sound more intelligent? " Well sorry if you can't understand my English, but it is not my mother tongue. If the correct word is harness, than it is ok, but I still believe in that. do not use neck harness. And yeah, don't be all your life playing sited, why? because when you are sited break the support with the floor and you have less suport to blow correctly on more demanding pieces. Try to play a Hard Contemporary piece sited and standing and then tell me the result.

  • BASSOON =D

  • my coment was for mffnqueen49 , but it didn't post as an answer, youtube is getting weird

  • great job!

  • ITS MCLOVIN'!!!

  • i've been playing on a wooden bassoon since i was 13. not because I'm spoiled, but the school rents it to me for around $50 a year b!tches

  • not enough bassoons!!!

  • i wuna play bassoon but there to expensive lol i'll stick to my flute and clarinet :)

  • wow this is amazing!

    i have a woodbassoon too.!

    my school got it.

we have 6 others like it...

  • why do i always see young kids and students with such nice.. even.. wood bassoons? how do you all afford them?

  • Ah. well. I figured. It's a shame they cost so much. i mean. maybe there would be more bassoon players if they didn't cost the price of a car.

  • I think the following things make sense:

    · they/their parents rent it from the music schools/orchestras

    · their parents buy them for them

    · they work for a couple of years and the buy them

The players are playing on Fox Renard 220/240, the 220 costs around $6,900 new and the 240 around $7,700 new.

I have the 240 and man, its so much better than the 222 I had before.

  • sweet. i like the 240 as well. unfortunatley, poor people and bassoons don't mix well. but you gotta do what you gotta do to play what you love, right?

  • haha, yes! :)

  • I bought a brand-new reanrd 220 in 1980 for $1300. Dug ditches all summer in Houston to get the money. Word.

  • amazing deal you got though

  • well.....i am about to be 13....and my teacher said that i needed a wooden bassoon and the school had one because believe me i would not even consider the bassoon if it wasn't all paid for...what can i say? my band director loves me

you have to realize though that some kids deserve it some have the god given talent....... i have been told that i have incredible tone quality...... and i learn quickly..... i have only been playing bassoon for about 6 months and i have already made all state.......

  • Oh whoa good for you! that's pretty impressive! my band teacher isn't as generous with the bassoon lol

  • well, congrats for being such a "gifted" bassoon player

    people admire gifted players

but I mean, being a gifted player is ok,

but a TRUE musician is always modest about his/her talent, no matter how good they are, they always find flaws and try to be better and better,

    yes, people admire gifted players

but they always LOVE modest and hardworking musicians

  • well...... i was trying to reply to somebody that said that kids who were still in middle school didnt deserve wooden bassoons..... i wasnt saying that i am a "gifted" bassoonist. i have flaws. such as im not very confident in playing. but. somebody said that people didnt deserve it. and i stuck up for myself because i do have one and lots of other kids have them. its not because were rich and snoody kids who get everything we want like the person i replyed to said. i didnt mean for it to sound

  • well, looks we just didn't understand each other, but, if that's the case, I also use a wooden bassoon (cheap and unknown brand actually haha but it works, and it does well)

but it's not mine, the school lends it to me, it's the only one they have, I couldn't pay one, not even a plastic-made one :(

but I agree with u, nobody has the autorithy to say "they deserve this, they don't deserve that"

specially music related issues ¬¬ pfff...

well, greetings to everybody who loves bassoon (:!!

  • me neither........ i cant wait to get one though....... i when i get older and can pay for it of course......

    sorry for the mix up.......

  • like i was rude and all....... but i really cannot stand it when people misjudge people.... all because we have wooden bassoons.......

  • You shouldnt say that some people dont deserve wooden bassoons because maybye they jst wanna make their sound better or any other reason but it was really rude because everyone deserves the same if they have a "god-givin" talent or not. and btw i got a wooden bassoon when if i first tried out for band because the school had one.

  • the less flopping around the better

  • lovely! what piece is this?

  • Muy bonito el sonido timbrado de la chica y del conjunto.

  • what piece is this? id really like to order it :) amazing cadenza

  • Buetiful

  • Any chance of getting a copy of the cadenza??

  • Oh. My. God.

    That cadenza was beautiful.

  • この曲の名前を教えて

  • yeah Marissa! nice job.

    Evan.

  • Very beautiful! Hopefully, someday I will be able to play that well on my bassoon... right now I sound more like a screeching tire. Literally.

  • go you... i just started a month ago playing bassoon... hopefully itll get better for both of us...good luck :)

  • Good luck to the both of you :)

You'll know when you're stuck with it when you get to grade 5! lol

    (apparently - I'm doing my grade 5 in about 3 weeks :s)

    I'm sure you're both great

And remember, the bassoon can never sound unimpressive...

    .x.

  • really great job from the both of you, but the girl have a better tone!

  • YOUTH SYMPHONY???? GOOD HEAVENS.

    This was fantastic!

  • Hey! I've got the sheet of this Wanhal's concerto for two bassoons in F major with piano reduction but I want to buy the orchestral score version. Does anybody knows the publisher of the orchestral score???

  • and the other movements?

  • Are those fox bassoons?

  • Yes.

  • Great!

  • i love this concerto.. so light and uplifting

  • Hey, the Vanhal's concerto for two bassoons!!!

  • Oh yeah! :P

Nah, woodwind quartets and wind quintets are /drool. Listen to Carl Nielsen's wind quintet, it's brilliant.

  • this is great i play the bassoon and the french horn and this would be sooooo much fun to play

  • ohh, french bells.

    <3333

  • Hey! Didn't we meet at the CBDA convention? Concert band the year before and wind symphony this year? Nice playing!

  • i wish my tone could sound as

    godly

    as yours.

    you are both amazing.

  • god... I'm 13, am I 2 old to start learning to play any musical instrument?

cuz evry 1 I kno (especially my best mate, who's a wonderful flute player) started in 1st or 4th grade, and I'm now in 8th... but here, you can only advance your rank from 5th grade...

  • plz, reply 2 me!

  • You're definitely not too old to start. The earlier you start the better, but with hard work you can progress just fine.

  • I'm 14 and I just started on the bassoon. My teacher says that 14 is a rather good age to start because the instrument is rather big. Of course, it's easier when you (like me) have played some other instrument first, but if you want to play, go for it! :)

  • You should've started younger using the tenoroon, it wouldve advanced ur bassoon skills even if you were small

  • im 19, and just started learning bassoon about a month ago, and even though i do not practice as much as i should, i am learning more and more and becoming a better musician. just be willing to put in the effort if you want to become a decent musician.

  • Its hard to practice bassoon alone. Try practicing in a duet with a treble cleff instrument

  • I'm 53, started bassoon at 50, just taken grade 6. Never too old!!

    Sheila

  • You are never too old!!!!!!! A year ago I started to learn the zampogna (youtube it...) and am not 26 and loving every minute of it. I started bass guitar at 13 and am still loving every minute of it ; )

  • I have a piano student who is advancing very quickly who is 24 years old. It's never too late to start learning anything.

  • she has a french bell. John Doe

  • Actually, they both have french bell RINGS. French bells are much different.

  • that part of the bassoon is the BELL. thus, the bell style is FRENCH.

  • Not at all. Its simply a German bell with a metal ring. No French style involved. :-)

  • The top joint is called the BELL. There is such thing as a German bell with a metal bell ring, such as the ones on the bassoons on the video. The French bell narrows sharply toward the Bb hole and has a metal ring on the edge. There is also a wooden ring on the narrower section of the French bell.

    (BAM)

  • Actually german bells (now plastic but formerly ivory) white rings on the top of the bell. Correct, french bells do have a metal ring. I'm not sure of the narrowing near the Bb pad or the wooden ring but the main difference is the color and size of the ring.

  • That is only the Fox way of identifying the bells. In reality, a French bell has the narrowed Bb pad section. Heckel identifies French bells that way in their catalogue and German bells as having an optional ivory, plastic, or metal ring.

  • Maybe I need to brush up on my bassoon bell theory. Lol.

  • I play in this symphony but, i'm in one of the younger groups.

  • Why are bassoonists so good looking?

  • why thankyou ;)

  • sweet!!!

    multiple bassoons ALWAYS sound beatly.

    one question:

is the one on the right on a french or german bassoon?

  • They are both German bassoons.

  • *correction*

They are both American bassoons with the Heckel system.

  • there are two different systems of bassoon, one built in France by buffet Crampon and Selmer, the other invented in Germany by Heckel. The poster was asking what system she had. there are many makers who make custom bells for your instrument, and many more who make metal bell rings. There is no such thing as a French or German bell ring, it is a question of style. As for American bassoons, well, whatever. Tone counts far more than where it was made.

  • Sttokato no good but greyt work

  • that was sooooo good!

  • Your minutes away from me kicking your ass.

  • oh good.

  • Tell me anything about this video:

Fragmento concierto en Fa Mayor de J.B. Wanhal

    Bye.

  • Which piece is this?

  • first movement of the Vanhal (or Wanhal, whatever) concerto for two bassoons.

  • no one can say we don't appreciate our bassoons! woohoo :)

    Jessica

  • Amazing! We loved it.

  • WOW!
