The producers have used stock footage of the Far East because they don't actually have much on Chengdu. It's not an unusual practice. BTW, what did you mean by the Japanese not using "connected characters"? It's the Chinese who reformed their characters, not the Japanese; the Japanese forms are more traditionally correct than modern Chinese ones.
