  • @rocketcaver, hello I just found your vid, I just got my first pitcher plant. It's like your one on top shelf right side front. I got it fairly big, I love it :).

  • ROCKETCAVER! You should make an update!!!!

  • The plants on the top shelf on the left with the lids are "nepenthes", or tropical pitcher plant.

  • hi

what are the plants which have red / green and have a 'lid', the ones at the beginning of the clip.

  • Hey.. awesome plants... how long do you think venus fly traps have been on earth?? Like when did they evolve?

  • hehe 4:33 kitty meow

  • one of them looks like a pokemon

  • Hey rocketcaver, your collection has come quite along way from the first meeting i met you at in illinois ;) and your sundews look fabulous! I also really like the fruit fly trick, which i will definitely have to try, although i'm not sure how good that would work in a small, stagnant apartment :D

  • @sundewman Hey! It's great to hear from you! Yes, those meetings were a lot of fun, wish we could do it again. We moved last summer (still in southern Illinois) and I gave away several of my plants rather than deal with moving them. Pretty much all I have left are my pings. Wish I had kept it all now, but you know how it is when you move. Some day I'll start back up again. Hope you are doing well, and if you see any of the other folks tell them I said "Hey".

  • @rocketcaver Will do. Good luck on starting your collection back up in the fugure. You know who can ask if you need some dews ;)

  • what type of lights do you use for your plants

  • @iamawsome545

I use regular 4 foot shop lights from the hardware store with one "daylight" bulb and one "coolwhite" bulb.

  • @rocketcaver ok thanks

  • For gnats I would recommend a butterwort, or posibly a sundew. Mexican butterworts (pingicula) are easy to care for and will do fine on a diet of gnats. Lanceleaf sundews are cheap and easy to care for also. If I had to pick one for gnats it would be the butterwort. But don't expect the plant to wipe out your gnat problem for you. It will catch a few, but some will refuse to land on it.

    Good luck!

  • @rocketcaver I just got my venus fly traps in the mail- first time grower. Should I keep them in any sort of special tank? Their Dionaea, and tiny. Do they need a humidifier or anything? (I live in a very very dry area.)

    Thanks!

  • I am sorry to hear your plants aren't doing so well, good luck, they are beautiful. I have ONE pitcher plant and I'm hooked. I love your video, may need your help, I need a plant that actually likes small gnats, fruit flies. I live in Seattle needless to say the humidity is usually 100%..lol. The pitcher plants I have are not tropical and the fruit flies just hang out on them :(

  • hello, what kind of light do you use for your plants?

  • Hooray! Im so glad i just ordered a ventrada becuse I loved the orange in the picture, so now i know yours are the same and Ill be very happy:)

  • Especially your Nepenthes plants look sooooo healthy!

I LOVE Nepenthes plants most of all carnivorious plants :D

You got that big one having it's pitchers in a "bowl" of water? for better humidity? :-)

I think I will do that with mine aswell when it grows hie pitcher just a bit bigger :-)

(got a plant of like 13CM it has 2 pitchers, and some dead pitchers ^^

The original plant almost died (the place where i bought it didn't take care of it!) so it made a side-plant growing like hell :D

  • This is so cool. Love your plants. I am going to start carnivorous plant collection too. Now all i need is to find a place to buy/trade the seeds for the low cost.

  • great video. thanks for sharing.

  • So you don't actually buy any insects for them right? They can solely live off the fruit flies breeding on the banana?

  • I just receive my 4 plants today and put them in pot... i hope they're going to survive ! the water thing bother me ...

  • thanks

  • At this time I don't have any plants for sale or trade, sorry.

Since I made this I have moved to a new house and my plants are not doing so well. I think it has to do with the room temp and humidity, this new house is much tighter, but the ventilation is much better, it is difficult to keep the humidity in the new plant room up where the plants like it. I'll have to work on that this fall. If I get it lined out I will post an update.

    Thanks for all the comments.

  • The bananna is to provide a place for fruit flies to breed, then the fruit flies get caught by the plants.

  • Why do you keep a banana and a sandwich?

  • Enjoyed watching your viewing of your inside CPOs plants etc. Good luck, for this is a fun hobby!

  • Can you make an update video?

  • Do you know an internet site for information on how to keep those plants in your house and where to get them. Some people have snakes, spiders and scorpions. I wan't a carnivorous plant instead:)

  • @dnaisinmybody : There are many web sites detailing care of carnivorous plants, and places to buy them.

If you haven't found any that suit your needs by now email me and I'll give you some of my favorites.

  • I have the exact same settup (I believe the same rack too). I agree, my plants keep me sane in the winter as well. It's great to know people have the same interests.

  • nice, that looks just like my plant shelf

  • miau ^^ nice plants!

  • great vid! what is the nepenthes at 0:40? also, would you sell any plants? thanks!

  • Hey!! The sundews you gave me started to recover last month! They are doing great! Thanks again!

  • would you sell a leaf cutting of one of the nepenthes

  • would you sell a leaf cutting of the nepenthes?

  • do u orderd the pitcher plant????? of it just come to u from havai???

  • Do you water all of your plants with distilled water? Can letting tapwater sit for a day be used to water carnivorous plants?

  • @EyeStabbingYum Letting the water sit only lets the chlorine out. The minerals stay in it no matter how long it sits. The minerals are what poison the plants so this doesn't do any good.

Most tap water will eventually kill almost all carnivorous plants.

All of my plants get watered with distilled or RO water. I buy RO (reverse osmosis) water at Walmart and Kroger from a water dispenser for like 69 cents a gallon. I have two 5 gallon jugs that I fill up and that lasts a long time.

  • @rocketcaver umm can we use bottled water or water from my refigerater dispenser

  • @Redslasher21 Only if it has very low mineral content. Most bottled water has minerals added to improve the taste. The filter on your refrigerator is probably just a carbon filter and will not filter out the harmfull minerals. The best is still distilled water or water that has been processed by reverse osmosis.

  • @rocketcaver can i use De-ionized water?

  • @Redslasher21 I believe de-ionized water would be ok, if you trust the source. I would test it with a TDS meter first. You can get a TDS meter pretty cheap on Ebay, and even at a good aquarium supply shop. Water is considered safe for these plants if it measures 50 or under on the TDS meter. Lower is better. Some aquarium shops might even test a sample of your water for you if you ask real nice.

  • @rocketcaver ok

  • Can i by one of your sundews

  • @EyeStabbingYum

I don't ordinarily sell plants, but maybe we can set up a trade.

Email me privately and we will discuss it.

  • did you ever germinate sundew seeds

  • @EyeStabbingYum

Not intentionally. But some of them seed themselves and spread to the other pots. I get so many extras this way I don't have to bother collecting seeds.

  • are the pitcher plants a type of orchid

  • @phdclockwork

No, they are not a type of orchid.

  • What kind of soil do you use?

  • @EyeStabbingYum

Each type of plant takes it's own special mix. But in general the soil needs to be well draining and free of any nutrients. 50/50 peatmoss and perlite works well for many of these plants. The peat and perlite must NOT have added fertalizers as that would kill the plants.

  • wow this is an exelent collection

  • @501rubra

    Thank you!

  • Awesome collection!!!! :) I am so jealous! The banana idea is smart.

  • @BitterBeauty19

Thanks! The bananna works pretty well, even in winter.

  • Uncle Gary turned me on to your train videos and this came up....Pretty Cool!

  • @jdfield80

That's interesting, I don't have any train videos.

  • hey buddy I need a plant that kills bugs in my room or home but i dnt want more bugs to come cane you help me out

  • @doghut101

Depends on what kind os bugs you are talking about.

  • Pretty cool.

  • @Kendall5199

    Thanks!
