Even though some of these trends seem pretty cool, I can't help thinking that a culture which so blindly follows fashion like that is a little shallow.
I guess when I see people following each other like sheep, it bugs me..
They appear to be just like the typical 'Bicker' tryle wallets you see, only these are much longer so that they stick out more. Also I see a lot of them have zippers to keep everything in & protected.
Cool for carrying arround your small gadgets without having a 'man purse' like here in Europe. I like them, may look for one in my travels.
it seems to me it's a bit of a spin-off on the metrosexual look. I've seen guys here in the states carrying clutch purses, and calling them murses. What they have done is put a clutch purse in their back pocket, and manned it up with chains, and such. Now I also understand japanese seem to get alot of ideas from the U.S. of the past. The leather wallets are more like the biker wallets. just my .02 cents.
The big wallet trend was started by the Japanese label Red Moon in the early 90s, which was inspired by Native American leatherworks - this is also where the beads/hanging stuff comes from. The really nice Japanese brands like Red Moon, Studio D'Artisan, and others tend to be incredibly expensive, often between $400-700 USD.
Japan also makes some of the best jeans, like Iron Heart, Samurai, The Flat Head, and others, but they're quite different looking from what these guys are wearing.
Takikaji is saying that this style isn't particularly popular and there are lots of other youth styles inspired by skating or hip-hop. The style shown in this video is American biker-influenced, despite the fact that (sadly) nobody in America actually dresses like this.
how do japanese associate money with status? would that be a reason for the large wallet? sort of like nice cars in america are supposed to mean the men are wealthy and therefore of a supposed 'higher' status.
i think i'm in love with this chanel so glad i fond it ,, japanese people are so fresh to watch and the way you comments of each video makes it better
oh man for years ive noticed ive tried many wallets and always hate them regular male wallets typical size in NY always felt waaay to small to even be precticle ive questioned how any of my friends can even carry money in them without folding the bills.. as gay as it may sound ive always felt those large female wallets are waay better at holding credit cards and not folding bills so its good to see once again japan always ahead of the game. so where can i buy one of these japan wallets?
Brands like Obbi Good Label, Corter, or Hollows Leather will make you a wallet like this. They're much cheaper than Japanese brands like Red Moon, which are insanely expensive. Most of the less-fancy and affordable brands stay in Japan, I'm afraid.
The rule in Japan is copy a US trend then slowly take it way past the parody of itself mark right on over to stupid as all fuck. This started way back a number of years when emo punk wannabes in the US work chains on their regular sized wallets. Its like when you see those tie dye hippie guys in Japan but all their "tie dye gear" is all perfectly pressed and brand new so they look like the sesame street version of hippies.
Just another example of all things "American". These wallets are nothing more than stylish versions of biker or trucker wallets from North America. I am from Canada & have a couple myself with different styles & lengths of chain (which by the way keeps you from losing it or getting pick pocketed). There has been a resurgence in the fashion world for the past dozen years or so of this type of wallet. Kinda tough guy/cool guy rebel feel to it.
I'll stick to my little flip open style leather wallet, that fits in my pocket.
@mokulen22 I totally agree. I've only ever seen women with such huge wallets, but then they got a the bag size looking wallet to fit in their purse of at least the same size.
But yeah, different culture... different fashion trends... and more things I won't follow. I'd rather be the rusty old fella stuck in an old trend then go with that. lol
In the US. These wallets were really popular in the 70s (I think). The wallets were not big but they had a chain to connect to the belt. It went out of fashion because a lot of US schools banned them because they were being used by gangs as a weapon to choke people from behind.
Kinda reminds me of Cowboys or Truckers here in America. lol Good thing people don't tend to steal in Japan. Most likely get a tap on the shoulder that your chain broke and you dropped your wallet if something were to happen to it.
heheheh i bought one with the belt clip on a chain and big button - they are great for all the coinage you get in japan (australia has no 1 cent coins, nor 5 dollar coins - japan has 1yen and 500yen coins)
damn i look cool :P
Yes Japan notes are very neat considering they are paper. Much harder to crease AUD as they are polymer
Hahaha I have to say this but they look like electricians lol at first few secs of the video I thought that guy was a repair man untill u walked up closer. Awesome vid as always and looking forawrd to more. Thanks lots
Hi! I think men and women in Japan, being as considerate as they are, use large wallets because the don't like to fold money and destroy them! You must be used to see how neat bills are.
me to,i am in uk though and have lots of kids so am waiting till they are older then i want to go to japan for 3 months and see EVERYTHING!! love it and this guys vids are awesome..hes livin the dream lol
lol, that wouldnt fly here in the U.S at all, if your in a crowd you might find your wallet missing from your pocket, also how in the world does one sit with that thing???
the big wallet trend was started here in the states by bikers. they've been doing it here since i can remember. all the harley and chopper guys have their big wallets chained to their belt so that it doesn't fall out why they are riding. more purpose than fasion with the guys here though.
If a Japanese person came to a city like Barcelona or Rome with a big wallet like that the pickpocketing gypsys eyes would pop out of their fucking heads.
Funny, first thing I thought of when I saw the first guy was:
Where's his Harley-Davidson bike? Those are just different styles of biker wallets. If you ride and need to take you wallet out of your pocket without getting off the bike, you can easily remove them and put them back in place (think drive-thru window, or a traffic stop).
Haha???Is this really japanese trend ?? :P My brother did weared this when he was 13...-_-That was like...5 years ago???:P Funny thing about japanese trend , that it is inspired by many other country's a la ganguro(california babe) :) They just make the fashion alive again =P Nice =P

does anybody ever notice you recording them? and giant wallets, that doesn't seem very secure. in the usa that would never fly, you'd get robbed within an hour (depending on where you live of course)
they are not heavy they are kinda the same as the big wallets that girls or should i say the ladies carry around you just can't see them since we have them in our purses or bags or w/e
@00kenchin haha, for me, it would be more logical to be the other way since girls like to have bigger butts than guys =)) so i thought the big wallets would be able to give that illusion/.
I think the chain is so no one can steal your wallet without you noticing.

does anybody ever notice you recording them? and giant wallets, that doesn't seem very secure. in the usa that would never fly, you'd get robbed within an hour (depending on where you live of course)

Nano wallets.

@00kenchin haha, for me, it would be more logical to be the other way since girls like to have bigger butts than guys =)) so i thought the big wallets would be able to give that illusion/.

thats crazy, my wallet is tiny. I would hate having a wallet that big, your back would be so messed up from sitting.
