They appear to be just like the typical 'Bicker' tryle wallets you see, only these are much longer so that they stick out more. Also I see a lot of them have zippers to keep everything in & protected.

Cool for carrying arround your small gadgets without having a 'man purse' like here in Europe. I like them, may look for one in my travels.

it seems to me it's a bit of a spin-off on the metrosexual look. I've seen guys here in the states carrying clutch purses, and calling them murses. What they have done is put a clutch purse in their back pocket, and manned it up with chains, and such. Now I also understand japanese seem to get alot of ideas from the U.S. of the past. The leather wallets are more like the biker wallets. just my .02 cents.

The big wallet trend was started by the Japanese label Red Moon in the early 90s, which was inspired by Native American leatherworks - this is also where the beads/hanging stuff comes from. The really nice Japanese brands like Red Moon, Studio D'Artisan, and others tend to be incredibly expensive, often between $400-700 USD.

Japan also makes some of the best jeans, like Iron Heart, Samurai, The Flat Head, and others, but they're quite different looking from what these guys are wearing.

oh man for years ive noticed ive tried many wallets and always hate them regular male wallets typical size in NY always felt waaay to small to even be precticle ive questioned how any of my friends can even carry money in them without folding the bills.. as gay as it may sound ive always felt those large female wallets are waay better at holding credit cards and not folding bills so its good to see once again japan always ahead of the game. so where can i buy one of these japan wallets?

Brands like Obbi Good Label, Corter, or Hollows Leather will make you a wallet like this. They're much cheaper than Japanese brands like Red Moon, which are insanely expensive. Most of the less-fancy and affordable brands stay in Japan, I'm afraid.

The rule in Japan is copy a US trend then slowly take it way past the parody of itself mark right on over to stupid as all fuck. This started way back a number of years when emo punk wannabes in the US work chains on their regular sized wallets. Its like when you see those tie dye hippie guys in Japan but all their "tie dye gear" is all perfectly pressed and brand new so they look like the sesame street version of hippies.

Just another example of all things "American".  These wallets are nothing more than stylish versions of biker or trucker wallets from North America. I am from Canada & have a couple myself with different styles & lengths of chain (which by the way keeps you from losing it or getting pick pocketed). There has been a resurgence in the fashion world for the past dozen years or so of this type of wallet. Kinda tough guy/cool guy rebel feel to it.

In the US. These wallets were really popular in the 70s (I think). The wallets were not big but they had a chain to connect to the belt. It went out of fashion because a lot of US schools banned them because they were being used by gangs as a weapon to choke people from behind.

heheheh i bought one with the belt clip on a chain and big button - they are great for all the coinage you get in japan (australia has no 1 cent coins, nor 5 dollar coins - japan has 1yen and 500yen coins)

the big wallet trend was started here in the states by bikers. they've been doing it here since i can remember. all the harley and chopper guys have their big wallets chained to their belt so that it doesn't fall out why they are riding. more purpose than fasion with the guys here though.

Where's his Harley-Davidson bike? Those are just different styles of biker wallets. If you ride and need to take you wallet out of your pocket without getting off the bike, you can easily remove them and put them back in place (think drive-thru window, or a traffic stop).
