I lived in Rio (8 years old) in 1958 and remember it well. I am glad to see the appreciation that there were other VERY great players with Brazil '58 besides Pele. Vava (most under-appreciated superstar, ever - and from Vasco da Gama!!)...Garrincha...Didi...Belini...Nilton Santos...Zagalo...on and on and on. Common 'wisdom' says Brazil 1970 was the world's best, ever, but I say no comparison to '58.

strange how when brazil lost in 1950 in the final as hosts everyone in brazil was depressed and even went to commit suicide and yet in 1958 in the final when sweden were hosts and lost they just got over it after like a few days and got on with their lives and didn't really give a shit unlike brazil who blamed their goalkeeper for their loss in 1950, sweden just accepted it

I lived in Rio (8 years old) in 1958 and remember it well. I am glad to see the appreciation that there were other VERY great players with Brazil '58 besides Pele. Vava (most under-appreciated superstar, ever - and from Vasco da Gama!!)...Garrincha...Didi...Belini...Nilton Santos...Zagalo...on and on and on. Common 'wisdom' says Brazil 1970 was the world's best, ever, but I say no comparison to '58.

At first I thought that Pele would be just an average player in today's soccer world, however, a lot of tricks that are used today were created by him, and besides that, at that time the opponent's were so hard on him that today any fault like that put the player in suspension by the fifa and even with the hard play he had he scored almost 1300 goals.

I've always been curious to how well Pele would do in today's football, as the game as evolved so much since then, the defending for some of those goals were horrific... Would Pele be just a decent technical player or would he be able to do what the likes of Messi and Ronaldo can do? It is something we will never know.
Ones things for sure he wouldn't be running around sluggish defences with such ease.

Nobody knows. If the Brazilian team of 1982 was lost before that cup, many of us would say the same about our selection. However, Italy defeated us and won that tournament... Football unpredictable, any sport is. In 1950 everybody, even the foreigners, was sure Brazi would win.

Em 58 eu tinha 12 anos, entendia muito pouco de futebol, mas eu vibrava de alegria quando um gol era marcado. Morava na fazenda, a transmissao era recebida atraves de radio a bateria de caminhao, a onda do radio fugia muito pq era atraves de onda curta, mas mesmo assim, em tds os jogos estavamos firmes no pe do radio, bons tempos.

This war REALLY the biggest brazilian team of the whole history, not the much overrated one of 1970... in the latter, Pele had reached 30 (at that time the meaning was, the best of his carreer already passed...) and close to him and Gerson (great midfielder) were playing players surely not so relevant, like Piazza, Brito, Marco Antonio and the goalkeeper Felix. In 1958's edition (and later in 1962) they had Garrincha, Didi, Vava and the Santos twins... another category of team, no doubts about.

A really nice thing by the brasilians to run with the swedish flag at the end of the game! In the older days honour and respect to the other team existed, and goodhearted winners/loosers existed. Nowadays if your team looses, the player that holds responsible for the loss is lucky if his not shot. soccer isn´t what it was used to be. look at the game today. As soon as someone looks at the other player, the player falls down screaming in agony. i can´t watch it, because i think it´s to pathetic.
