  • bass player is not playing it right

  • Thanks for posting, Diana does a great job here.

I was a kid when I heard Grace Slick sing White Rabbit, utterly amazing.

The song was revolutionary, and I saw Starship live in Minneapolis many years later.

Not good comparing anybody to Grace Slick, nobody wins. I know somebody who plays with Big Brother. They use several women to sing the Janis Joplin part, and they're all very capable.

This music is so great, it will be done decades from now when all the originals are gone or retired.

  • Diana Mangano makes this performance, even though Marty and Paul are onstage. She's got a powerful voice, and you've gotta admit is terrific eye candy.

  • Terribleness.... "Got Slick!"

  • That's horrible that someone actually had the audacity to hold up a "Got Slick" sign. My feelings would be a little hurt if I were Diana Mangano. I mean, she already knows that she has big shoes to fill and all, but the point is that she has a bad ass voice and obviously the members of Jefferson Starship think so too, or they would not have hired her. And if Grace Slick wanted to do keep playing, she would have been up there. It's just mean.

  • @czerwony45 -Well said!!

  • is i'm sorry, but the tie-dye/headband thing is just silly.

    love the airplane though

  • paul hasn't lost a lick and this chic is not bad-a little off but so was grace early on

it's good that this music is still around

    god bless the airplane

  • Grace was right...OLD people look stupid on stage playing Rock and Roll.....plus see the "Grace Slick" sign in the audience at the start....face it Paul, it;s over , dude.

  • FUVK YOU

  • Truth hurts.....eh? Plus you spell it thusly....FUCK YOU!

  • Hey while we are on the topic of 80s bands here are some I really like; Talking Heads, The Police, The Stray Cats, Van Halen, AC DC, any of which would blow Starship out of the water fella. At the risk of sounding immodest I would say my knowledge of music is quite high for the average layman, that includes the last 50 years, not just one decade.

And I am not a love child as you so ineloquently put it....My fave band is the Doors, nothing love child about them.

    Deep enough for you dude?

  • Hahahaha! AC/DC couldn't outplay a pack of semi-retarded chimpanzees let alone Starship, politically correct disney-esque pedophile music aside, AC/DC has the most 2-dimensional full-of-shit lyrics of any band in rock history, every fucking song is about being naughty and that is about as complex as it gets. Starship is not among the best of 80s bands even within their respective genre but they are of a higher caliber than all the 3rd rate corporate mainstream bitch bands that you listed off.

  • Yeah and you sold how many records to say anything about ACDC!

  • Let's try this one more time moron...I am not condemning all 80s bands , I was merely voicing my opinion as someone who has been alive long enough to compare both eras. And if you think I am retarded based on an innocuos statement such as that then I fear that it is YOU who are "Retarded" I don't need to twist your words moron, you do a fine job of it all on your own.

  • No dickwipe, you twisted my words by insinuating that their was a mutual agreement between us that Starship was "bad", I never implied such a thing.

  • Yes she's no Grace Slick but she has a nice voice. I ddn't compare the later carnations of the band with the heyday of The Airplane, which was ar better than anything they did as Jefferson Starship. And yes Starship was BAD..... We built this city OMG!!!

  • I love how all you generationally retarded love children try to condemn 80's bands based off one hit single. This just shows how 2-dimensional and parochially minded you stupid tree-huggers are in regard to music, you have no fucking depth.

And stop twisting my words. It's really a matter of personal taste but from a technical standpoint Starship eclipses both earlier versions of the band back to fucking stone age.

    80s Starship > Jefferson Starship.

  • Damn... What the hell happened to Starship?! What happened to "Nothing's Gonna Stop us Now" and "Sara"?! ... I am very disappointed... I thought they had truly survived all this time... when in reality the true Jefferson Airplane has died a long time ago...

  • Exactly, since the disbandment of Starship in the early 90's, Jefferson Starship has devolved into the lowest common denominator of shit.

I agree that 80's Starship was the best iteration of Jefferson Starship, both musically and intimately the band was at the height of its career. Songs like "Tomorrow Doesn't Matter Tonight" and "Love Rusts" blow this 3rd rate garbage out of the water.

  • Grace was smart ! Got out when the "getting" was good, and she "needed" too ! Give it up guys ! Especially Lester Holt ! How pathetic !

  • Saw them in Italy 3 days ago.

Cathy Richarson was the singer and was great, but Diana Mangano was also very beautiful!!!

  • great pipes on Diana and she's surely not hard to look at either. I loved then as Jefferson Airplane/ Starhip but when they became just Starship, well...........

  • Please her voice is the epitome of shit, it's emotionless and weak like this performance.

And 80's Starship blows this lifeless 3rd rate garbage out of the fucking water, albums like "No Protection" and "Love Among the Cannibals" was the pinnacle of their career.

  • I posted this because the singer is a friend of mine. Not to read your negative opinions of how the world of music and their performers should never change.

  • I was wondering why Diana is not in the band anymore?

  • Oh Man, Diana sounds great!!I wish I could get in touch with her, I went to school with her at Silver Creek and was supposed to graduate with her in 86 but failed a grade, I wonder if she remembers me. If someone can help me contact her leave me a message.

  • I went to SUNY Fredonia with Diana and remember her well from parties, mutual friends, around campus, etc.; I wanted to ask her out pretty bad, but didn't think she'd accept, because despite my hanging out and partying with all the campus hippies and so forth, I'd just gotten out of the Air Force from 7 years' active duty and I still projected pretty much of a macho-conservative kind of aura...she seemed to be into the longhair-commie kind of guy, was a member of Amnesty International...

  • ...one of the most beautiful and charismatic women I've ever encountered; I wonder if she'd remember me too, if she saw me again!

  • Go Lester! Guess who originated that style of electric bass playing...

    :)

p.s. the 2007 SOL tour ROCKED!

  • errOr...go stick your head in a pig

  • I agree with paulrichard. I saw them at Cottage Grove, and they blew me away. Never better.

  • I agree. Nothings worse than watching an old performer loose there touch. Grace's legacy will stay alive with a new pretty face and good voice now at the helm.

  • @GhettoTechnoGeek She cannot with-hold Grace's legacy, she will never fill her shoes. Ever....

  • Please, 80's Starship pisses on this 3rd rate garbage.

The original Jefferson Airplane - Starship were good but this is utterly pathetic, the guitarwork is sub-par and filtered out with bad synth and the new lead singers voice is weak and inflexible. She clearly isn't desirable for this type of music.

And don't even get me started on the audience, they look like a crowd lifeless zombies on 3rd rate crack. Jefferson Starship is dead.

  • (the guitarwork is sub-par )

    What!?

I heard a great Fender Twin Reverb tone with a Les Paul (if I remember correctly) played by Slick Aguilar. Maybe you need your ears checked.

  • Even the best equipment can't mask a bad performance. This presentation of Jefferson Starship is clearly lacking any real focus or intensity.

Maybe you need a frontal lobotomy to eradicate all the shit thats clogging the logic portions of your brain from smoking so much 3rd rate nigger crack with the rest of those sub-human idiots that you call hippies.

  • Lester Holt on bass? What's going on here?

  • God, would you look at these dickheads... This is an atrocity. Starship just has to be killed off, it's long overdue.

  • Your full of manure. I saw them live recently and was blown away. They were never better.

  • I agree, the Jefferson Airplane - Starship STILL rock!

  • That's because you have no taste.

  • How can that be punky kid? I've been a student of music my whole life and a recorded musician. Your musical taste may be delineated by the constraints of todays elementary musical styles and corporate sponsored/crafted groups.

Hence, you can't see beyond your own limited range.

  • I never said I listen to contemporary music dickwipe but Jefferson Airplane are musical midgets when compared to the type of music I listen to.

And for the record Jefferson Starship was always a corporate band. just like overrated, talentless shit bands like the Beatles and Nirvana. The only difference being that Jefferson Starship were artistically accomplished and actually capable of producing good music.

  • Hence, you're a parochially minded, washed up submissive tree hugger that condemns all music that came after his time as inferior. Face it, the late 60's and early 70's were a transitional period, rock music didnt peak until the 80's and early 90's. You're era was important yes, but extremely overrated because of the generationally retarded love children who praise it like it was being recorded 300 years ago.

  • errOr

agreed this is a disgrace to the starship music, a total slaughter of a great rock band.

  • Don't like it? Don't listen.

  • That's not Grace Slick :(

  • at least Somebody is playing bass!

  • you killed the great song...shame on you^^

  • "One original member present." In addition to Kantner, Mary Balin is also onstage, although he looks to be totally out of gas.

  • *Marty. Yeah, he does seem kind of tired...

  • One original member present. "White Rabbit" would have been more befitting of a "celebration" of the Summer of Love -- but little surprise that tepid American TV wouldn't have allowed it, even now. Burns me up to see the (inevitable) commodification, which was exactly one of the targets of the hippie movement.

  • Don't know if NBC would have allowed White Rabbit. Regardless, it's not a Jefferson Starship song, it's by Jefferson Airplane. David Freiberg is an original JS member and is "present". Marty Balin joined midway through the recording of their first album. "Out of gas"? Yeah, he probably stayed up all night instead getting out of bed for a 6AM gig.

  • "it's not a Jefferson Starship song, it's by Jefferson Airplane." Never mind, Somebody To Love is an Airplane song too.

  • If I remember correctly, Grace brought "White Rabbit" and "Somebody To Love" with her when she left the Great Society...but they were made famous by the Jefferson Airplane. I loved that band and was lucky enough to be growing up in the San Francisco Bay Area during the '60's so I saw them more times than I can remember :)

  • Thanks for posting this. Great nostalgia.
