I think what the comment meant, was the "rocket's red glare and bombs bursting the air" line. To a german (which I guess he was), that line sounds strange. Not fascist though, just militaristic. And indeed, if a german sang a similar line in the anthem, holding a flag, he'd get strange looks from all over the world.

The American Anthem has nothing to do with facism or American imperialism. In fact, the National Anthem.. originally known as "The Defense of Ft McHenry"... was a song about the valiant DEFENSE of our homeland in it's struggle against British tyrrany. I agree with you. People should be proud of their countries and host their flags high. These days people are too afraid to say something because god forbid they may offend someone.

I quite respect American's pride in their flag. While in New York City last year my father and I were both surprised and impressed to see a flag waving on the back of a fire engine. In the UK, people are afraid to display the flag due to fear of being accused of offending others.
That was the most difficult thing for me to become used to while I was there. The National Anthem of Great Britain still brings tears to this "yank's" eyes! "God Save Our Gracious Queen..."!!!

Toward the end, I actually started to like Tara. Quite a character. I'm American. In fact I live maybe 5 blocks from the White House. However, I am 100% British in ancestry. In fact my family still has relatives there. It might interest you (Tara) to know that the Star Spangled Banner (the tune) is from an old English drinking song. We Americans have a unique opportunity to go beyond a crude tribalism that defines patriotism so much. We can move beyond that and see the good in everybody.

For a start you can sing your anthem as much as you like because it was composed John Staffod Smith (1750- 1836), a British man so its really being patriotic to the UK if you think about it. I'm glad that Tara made this video because she has a really good point. Why is it wrong to show any pride for your country? To show any sort of patriotism? People who waste time on the internet criticizing other people's beliefs or opinions are the fascists.
