I was released from prison in August 1953 and could never find a job since, this song rings so true. That's what stealing a packet of wine-gums does when you're under 18
@jotapecu Imposible estar más de acuerdo...ni siquiera gigantes como Bill Bruford o Chester Thompson han tocado los temas de Genesis como Phil...claro, él mismo escribía sus partes de batería.
first time I heard this I felt I was forcing myself to listen to such a soft tune, then came near the end when it explodes into a classic genesis sound around 4:05, a young banks collins hackett rutherford going off. which makes the song imho
of all the outtakes, this is one the few I don't quite like...The main part was always a bit too soft for me and the keyboard solo always hurt my ears...but well, just me, the rest enjoy the song
This should have been on Wind & Wuthering. Have never listened to Own Special Way again since the day I bought the cd. Cut it off the track listing on your mp3 and replace it with this and you have Genesis's most beautiful album they ever made.
@20thesoul Totally agree about 'Own Special way' that probably is the first album with a song to skip and at the same time I love 'Blood on the Rooftops'
@20thesoul I agree.I think Hacketts contributions were cruelly overlooked and without doubt led to his frustration within the band. This is just beautiful,I've always considered YOSW way below par.
BEST B-SIDE EVER ! SHOULD BE PUT IN THE PLACE OF "YOUR OWN SPECIAL WAY" IN "WIND AND WUTEHRING"... THIS ONE WOULD BE JUST A PERFECT ALBUM... LAST GREAT BANKS' SOLO TOO !
I have the original edition in vinyl of 1978 with 3 track : " match of the day", "pigeons" and "inside and out" ;-)) .pour les frenchies ,le nom de l'album "spot the pigeon" fait reference non pas au titre "pigeons" mais a " match of the day" ! c'est un terme footballistique anglais qui signifie "tirer dans la lucarne" Phil Collins etait un fan de football et l'est certainement encore ...
Your Own Special Way would have been alright if it didn't go on longer than Supper's Ready. It's a three minute single dragged out indefinitely. That stupid instrumental bit in the middle should not have happened. It should have just stopped there. All Mike Rutherford songs are good but TOO LONG. Except that shit snowman song. That's just too long. And shit.
@Penguinarmy69 The instrumental bit is the best part of the song! But then I'm a sucker for Fender Rhodes...you could play "Mary Had a Little Lamb" on that instrument and I'd probably love it.
@jhillst Is that defo a Rhodes? It sounds a bit crap if it was. This just sounds like a cheap leccy piano to me. Tony Banks was never one for realising when a keyboard sounded a bit cheesy. I think he should stick to acoustic piano and melletron. The Tron rules!!
@Penguinarmy69 Yeah, I'm pretty sure I read somewhere that that was the only song where Tony used a Rhodes. (It's possible there may be a synth being played on top of it, though.)
Mellotrons are cool but overrated. I think Tony used a lot of great sounds over the years...and some cheesy ones as well. I don't know about you but I can't stand the synth sound Tony uses for the fast solo on this track...it's too "wailing."
This is the song I was talking about that I loved the best on Spot the Pigeon. I LOVE this song.. It's so beautiful, and yet the lyrics are so hard & true in life. People get nailed for things they don't do.
@LaulineLo Yeaaaaah ! You are damn right ! I do like you comment specially the way you refer to the most boring Genesis song because millions of old fans believe that and think the same way you do !
I'm in heaven here with this beautiful masterpiece!!!

El trabajo de Collins en la sección final de este tema es un 6/8 DE-MO-LE-DORRRRR!!!
Nadie tocó o tocará mejor ese ritmo que el tío Phil...

@mario94parrain Agreed - They should have included this in W&W and just release Special Way as a single.

Point blame squarely at TONY BANKS, who has the final word on everything GENESIS, as to why this didnt appear on W&W.

Good song and would have probably fit on W&W -- however it should have replaced All In a Mouse's Night, not Your Own Special Way.

@Penguinarmy69 Sounds like an 'RMI Electra Piano' to me. I like the fact that it sounds 'cheesy'. A Rhodes would have not had the same effect!
