  • Now, that is what you call a perfect ten. I loved the old scoring. This new scoring like in figure skating or ice skating is very confusing. Please bring both of them back, please?

  • wasnt nadia comaneci the first to get a 10? plz respond anyone

  • @ljgymnast4856 Nadia was the first person to get a 10 in gymnastics, you are correct. They even had to give her a 1.0 with the score boards they had, because they hadn't even put in the space for a 10. Nadia got the first perfect 10 in gymnastics in 1976 in the uneven bars. So yes, you're totally right.

  • Who came here after watching Dom Irerra on the Carson Show,

  • damn!! perfection

  • Nkakaiyak huhuhu

  • Hells yeah... I remember seeing this when I was 8.

  • homegirl stuck it twice!

  • i thought nadia was the only one to get a ten .. ?

  • @SmileBeautyDebz There have been several perfect 10's in olympic gymnastics. nadia,Mary Lou,Shannon Miller

  • @SmileBeautyDebz and Milosovici. She was the last to score a perfect 10.

  • @SmileBeautyDebz No. Nadia was the first to get a ten other gymnast got a ten too but Nadia Comaneci was the first to get a 10 :) Yes, Nadia was truly amazing but Retton was too

  • @SmileBeautyDebz she was just the first to ever score the perfect 10. i think that Nadia and Mary Lou are the only 2 people in history to get the perfect 10. i could be wrong though.

  • @meganvb21493 i think that their the only 2 that got perfect 10 in the Olympics because i saw collage gymnastics competitions and some girls got perfect ten ..

  • @SmileBeautyDebz 1984 Olympics in Women's Artistic Gymnastics, those who scored a "Perfect 10": Ma Yanhong of China, Ecaterina Szabo of Romainia, Simona Pauca of Romania, Julianne McNamara of the United States and Mary Lou Retton of the United States.

  • @SmileBeautyDebz At the 1988 Olympics, the women who scored a perfect 10 were Daniela Silivas of Romania and Elena Shoushounova of the Soviet Union. At the 1992 Olympics, the women who scored a perfect 10 were Lavinia Milosovici of Romania and Lu Li of China.

  • She isa very beautiful young lady! I wish the girls today looked like her. Clean. No tatoos. No metal hanging out of holes in her face. She is absolutely gorgeous!

  • very few sports have that ONE PERFECT MOMENT... but i saw this live when i was 8, and it was chilling... and then, to prove that it was no accident, she went and did it again... wow... she even got her face on a box of Wheaties...

  • did she get 2 tens?

  • I remember that performance, I was only 6 years old. I was watching the gym at t.v. and I were very touched by this gymnast. Thank you for sharing this great moment XD

  • @tremblaymarieh I was 7, and it was like yesterday!!!! Thats whats up. I then wanted to becme a gymnast, which I did.

  • thanks buck!!!!!!

  • Gives me goosebumps! Wish I had been alive to witness this!

  • oh my god i got goosebumps

  • I love watching gymnastics! Thanks Buck!!

  • I remember all this very clearly..she absolutely dominated those olympics..she was in another stratosphere!.."in the zone" doesnt begin to describe it!..I rememb er actually feeling a bit sorry for the other girls, she was that good then..wont forget watching that..incredible performances

  • I think it's just amazing that AFTER getting the 10 on her first vault, she chose to vault again! From what I understand about gymnastics(which isn't much, so correct me if I'm wrong) but it's the best score out of the 2 vaults, so she didn't HAVE to vault again, right? And she still did - and nailed it! Assuming I could ever do something as amazing as these gymnasts do, if I got a perfect score, I wouldn't want to try a 2nd time for fear of not getting a perfect again. What confidence she had!

  • WOW

  • ha i just saw her on the dairy queen commercial :)

  • @pinksparkle009

LOVE THAT COMMERCIAL!!...well and of coarse marry lou!!(:

  • i wish videos like this, young women earning glory through merit, would get more views than the kind of stuff by that rotten brat miley cyrus

  • @PopeOfTheUniverse

hey.... r u probably the insecure rotten brat... take your hate somewhere else.

  • Did they not have high speed cameras back then? Sure she was great no question, but I cannot see all that made this event great. I know they had high speed 35 mm cameras that could take excellent stills....WHere ARE THEY??? Thanks, to anyone that knows.

  • I love when the commentator says "Oh boy" before she hits the vault horse.

  • its so sad that these vaults are forever tainted by her FX performance, which was arguably quite overscored. She was obviously a great talent, but her victory will forever be debated by those who understandably believe Zsabo was robbed. Even if that issue is put the rest, the ghost of Mostepanova keeps the question mark alive. Alas, it was the 80s. The country wanted Karate Kid, and they got it. Thank you MLR for these exceptional vaults and that bad ass DLO on the floor.

  • *Sigh* I SO miss my gymnastic days!. Damn just to turn back time for that...sweet. I love the fact that we are physically alike LOL!. Itty bitty powerhouses LOL.

  • I'll do it again!

  • Oh wow, I remember watching this live! I was around 8 years old when she won the gold. Wow, I feel old now lol.

  • <3 and always will <3.

  • She was cute!

  • too bad Verne Lundquist wasn't calling this (don't know why'd he'd call a gymnastics meet lol)

"Mary Lou how, do you DO!!"

  • @hattielovescattie yes I competed with her daughters and beat them;)! I didn't know she was there til after:(

  • @gymnastagirl141009 i just saw her daughter too! i was at the mardi gras meet. one of her daughters is in level 6, but i was competing in IPO

  • I wonder if any of her 4 daughters compete?Reading her bio,LOL the family real name was Rotunda.

  • amazing! she really is my hero!!!

  • she lands so far away from the vault!!

  • I bet her hometowm was going nuts after this moment.

  • pure honest perfection.

  • 1-24-2011. She's full of glee at 43. Happy Birthday, Mary Lou. Or can I refer to you as a little stick of dynamite. More than JJ Evans ever was.

  • I'm sorry but this was in an age when judges weren't afraid to give Americans the scores they deserved - and probably only because the USSR wasn't there. The fact the scores were so close with Nastia in '08 and even in skating in '10 with Evan, and Davis & White and Belbin & Agosto, is ridiculous when they were clearly better than marked. They should really do away with countries and let athletes compete individually; there's too much scandal otherwise.

  • shes from my hometown (:

  • i can't stop smiling! she's great

  • This memory is one of my favorite top 10!

  • @SGhockeychika4

Excellent comment. She was only 'lucky' due to the fact that the Soviets and their bloc would've given lower votes out of spite. Screw these youtube communists.

  • Destroyed the communists, Go!

  • Comment removed

  • @jessicacarmon ERM, No it isn't! Id like to see your phat ass do that combination in mid air and land on your feet ms Jessica Carmon. Always haters.

  • I've probably watched this video a thousand times on my old VHS. Still makes me smile and tear every time.

  • I've probably watched this vault a thousand times. This still makes me smile from ear to ear on my old VHS tapes..

  • @JGFallen What? I don't remember that, what did she say?

  • i think shes my favorite

  • I love Mary Lou retton but didn't someone see her step back on the end? It could of been a 9.95 but I'm happy for her

  • @MyCupcake6 Idiot she didn't step back at all.

  • @MyCupcake6 obviously you are the only person who has every seen this step.

  • Glad they went with the side shot for the 2nd vault. That height and distance - WOW!

  • she was amazing....an amazing gymnast....I miss the perfect 10!

  • @hiphopgrl82 yeah, but today's scoring system works much better.

  • Ha how do you even focus enough to do a second vault after that? After you had just done the best vault ever and you knew you won? Wow. She was awesome though.

  • spinner

  • I was 17 and in love with her.

  • WOW! AMazing!

  • America's sweet heart.

  • @webcamguy42 ...try 26yrs later

  • BAD ASS!!!! YES!! USA!!

  • I remember being 6 yrs. old and watching this on tv...I wanted to be like her so much when I was growing up...she is amazing and is still doing great things to this day!!!!! She is an inspiration to all!!!!!

  • WOW! SHES AMAZING!!!! I look up to her! She is so brave and so lucky! :)

  • I'm glad she vaulted again even when she didn't need to; just to show the people that didn't win that luck had nothing to do with it, and that it was just pure talent and hard work.

  • Fantastic; one of my favourite moments in gymnastics and in sport. Her joy was palpable and infectious:) You couldnt help but share it:) Phenomenal performance:)

  • I had to work from very early in the morning until late at night, so my family would tape the gymnastics and wait to watch it with me when we got home. This was so exciting to see! What a sport she was to make that second vault after the drama of winning the gold. I remember that Bela Karolyi teased her, "Go do a third one!"

  • U S A!

  • Freaking hilarious how many self-proclaimed experts there are! If Mary Lou was 16 today and going through the same training, had the same rules, and same scoring system- she would still kick their butts and still be a sweetheart while doing it.

  • It doesn't look like she hopped, it looks like she landed on her tippy toes,.....

  • That is amazing. I wish I could do that.

  • ppl that say the vault wasnt perfect are idiots...... comment on something less technical like hackey sack or something.......

  • that vault wasn't perfect

  • Nice vault but she did hop...

  • @jacquestwo did you not se the second one just as perfect???????? There was no hop on the first vault, you better watch it again.

  • First of all‚ just because one person commented something that includes the russians does not at all mean that the world should hate that great country. Nobody should have anything against anybody and I think people are being ridiculous when they always say things against the russians. And the american and russian rivalry is also ridiculous‚ they are both amazing country and should just support eachother and help eachother. Every country is great.

  • Well said. I agree.

  • @oxLiddsxo

Ok I must jump in and correct you here....forgive me please. It was not a battle between US "us" and the Russians. This was a personal dual that played out between Retton for the US and Ekaterina Szabo of Romania. The Russians were almost a non-factor for gold and silver medals. Remember that this was not the over all team competition in this moment...this was the individual all-around. This has always been one of my top 5 Olympic moments in history.

  • @MrDante1974 ALMOST a non factor? don't you mean COMPLETELY a non factor? The USSR totally boycotted these games. There was no Russian team at all.

  • @lamontofnazareth That's not nice because the Russians have produced some of the greatest gymnasts of all time. And i'm from & raised in Russia and it's a lovely country.

  • @GymnasticsFan1144 Don't let it bother you. The idiot probably couldn't find Russia on a map of eastern Europe.

  • @oxLiddsxo thankyou my comrade russia needs people like your you should join the spetsnaz

  • @oxLiddsxo I know right!!! PEOPLE ARE PEOPLE

  • The has the gift of being very short. This came into play when she did this.

  • This will always be one of the best moment in the olympics.

  • That....

    ...was badass!!

  • This is why i love Mary Lou, she's all smiles, and you can tell she truly enjoys what she is doing. There are so many gymnasts who you can tell do the sport because they are good, not because they want to. Mary Lou had a passion for the sport, and happened to be very good too!

  • I was at the beach in Florida watching this while on vacation. I remember crying I was so happy. I was 11 years old, and remember it like it was yesterday.

  • We did party in Fairmont, West Virginia that night. She came home the next day.

  • I bet you guys were goin absolutely nuts when she got the 10.

  • Mere words cannot describe it. She put our little town on the map. We lived about a half mile from her parents. All of her family are small, but very athletic.

  • WV represent!!! :D

  • @NAGGERNUTZ Wait.....how would she have come home the next day? Wasn't event finals after that?

  • @Yuri92001 - She came home the day after she won it. They met her at the Benedum airport in Bridgeport, WV with a fire truck. She rode on top of the fire truck all the way back to Fairmont. The streets were lined with people. They took her to Anthony Chevrolet and she was given a brand new red corvette convertible with the license plate that said MARYLOU. It was the first plate in the state with 7 letters. She flew back for the rest the next day. All I know is, she had 2 days between events.

  • @NAGGERNUTZ That's strange that they would let her do that but ok. Hey if it happened whatever but I have never heard of that :)

  • @Yuri92001 - I thought it was kind-of a waste just flying home for a day, but she did and it was one of the greatest things to ever happen for little Fairmont, WV. The entire route from the airport to Fairmont was literally lined with people. We lived close to the highway, so we walked out to wave to her. Actually, the gymnastics school where she first started was directly across the street from my neighborhood.... Arialport Gymnastics.

  • It would have been slightly embarrasing if she fell on that second vault.

  • Slightly? LOL

  • I'd bet my firstborn that never even entered her mind -- that's the difference between her and us

  • can you imagine doing a suke full twisting layout on the old vault nowadays???

    OMG

  • omg tht wass soo good. i wish i could do that. they nneedd to put mary burke's 10.0 vault on here!

  • wow. beautiful. funny looking vault though. haha

  • she was SO lucky the Soviet Union boycotted these games.

  • that's just a little rude

  • whatever, you russians allways have to bitch around, not wierd the world dislike you. From Norway =)

  • Since I meet quite often absolutely the same type Americans as COMANECISALTO1, I can say that many Russians think absolutely the same way about americans ("After all they are wondering why we do not like them!"). This is two sides question, the question of stupid people from both "great" countries which are still thinking there is a cold war between them. They are like kids.

  • she and shawn johnson are the only two gymnast that smile

  • Another Great West Virginia Mountineer!

  • WOW!!!!!!

  • PERFECTLY EXECUTED

  • This video has the same kind of feeling as the video from when Carly Patterson won. I love it!

  • I admire her focus, to be able to nail a second vault after done that first one, with the audience going bonkers around the arena. She is all smiles and happy and then, as soon she salutes the judges for her second vault, there is no smiling really, you can see in her eyes that there is nothing outside her that can disturb her now, gives me the chills when you see people switch into performance mode like that, amazing!!!

  • omg same here i watch this all the time and gives me shills all over

  • no one is as good as Nadia Comanchi

  • comeneci i think that's how its spelled

  • it's in fact Comăneci (I can tell, I'm Romanian and originally from the same town as Nadia)

  • when she takes off she does it with such conviction, u can tell that this 16 YEAR OLD GIRL just stunned the world!!!!

  • Awesome - I have never been as happy for an Olympian as I was for Mary Lou Retton when she won the gold!

  • She celebrated before the score came up! Wouldn't you wait until you saw the 10?!

  • because she did a really good vault and knew it. It's like if you know you did really good on a test even if you hadn't gotten it back yet.

  • She already knew. =)

  • ...good athletes KNOW what the score will be.

  • It's funny that Mary Lou Retton's full twisting Tsukahara performed in 1984 was more difficult than a full twisting laid out Yurchenko performed by Daniela Silivas and Elena Shushunova in 1988. They're all great gymnasts though.

  • MLR was incredibly explosive but she is almost historically unique amongst female gymnast for her upper body power relative to her size.

  • Funny how? Just seems like your opinion.

I loved MLR...but I found it a little foul how Carl Lewis got hosed when it came to endorsements after his show in LA. Just goes to show that some Americans are considered more "American" than others.

  • @cbaldwinjr How did Lewis get hosed? I remember he got plenty of endorsements. Back up your statement with some facts if you have them.

  • Her vaults were good but didn't deserve 10s, especially the second one.

She's lucky Mostepanova wasn't in the '84 games.

  • she is rubber ball girl.

  • yes, isn't it terrible to be so excited and happy that she just did the absolute best that she could to win a gold medal? I mean, the nerve...

  • Comment removed

  • i know her oldest daughter :)

  • Is she the one who is an up and coming elite?

  • uh i dont know anything about gymnastics but i guess so haha im not even sure what that is but probally. she practices like 4-6 hours a day and doesnt have a gym period

  • this is from the 80's so no, not really, but she is a legendary elite.

  • why'd i get a thumbs down? i was asking about her daughter. i know who mary freaking lou is.

  • wow.. shes is the only one who has gotten a 10.00! geesh!

  • haha, first had has nadia comaneci!

  • Not bad for a little girl from a small town- Fairmont, WV. Mary Lou is as graceful today as she was 25 years ago.

  • LOL, with today's hyper arbitrary judging, mary lou would get a 9.5 in execution--they'd take off tenths just to be stingy.

  • I cry, and proud to be an American!!!! USA!!

  • i got goosebumps from watching thiss! its awesome!

  • Probably one of the best clutch moments in the history of sports...or at least the olympics.

  • Yeah, this moment still gives me the chill 25 years later, i remember LA 84 like yesterday, i was a six year old in guyana,it was SPECIAL

  • Man this still gives me chills 25 years later. I remember watching this as a little boy. I had seen the USA team at a Car Wash in Houston raising money to go to the Olympics. I was so excited to see the girls on TV a few weeks later. Ah memories!

  • i totally agree. i am getting the chills watching it right now. truly incredible.

  • I was 14 years old when I saw this! Mary Lou is still awesome :-)

  • Really beautiful!!

  • no dumbass, back then they took the higher score of the two vaults, not an average, she didn't even need the second vault. The technique and distance from the vault with a slight foot movement on the second vault might have given her a 9.95 on the 2nd vault, if at all. Oh by the way, I looked at your channel, your obsession with Sharon Tate, a murdered woman is very SCARY!!!!!!

  • @ 2:07, "Ohh, what a tightly wrapped package of explosives..."

    OMFG, he got THAT right!!!

  • Well her legs never break, and how many gymnasts can you come across today who can say they can do that? You guys should watch her video on the uneven bars...it's amazing. I havent seen any gymnasts do what she did when I watch gymnastsics

  • in today's code of points, would like be around a 5.0 in start value??

  • 22 feet? I don't think that's possible

  • That comment has always confused me also. I think Cathy meant 22 feet from the time her feet hit the springboard.

  • She kinda looks like Princess Di...

  • Gee you think she rocks making history and doing the best vault ever. Also getting a perfect 10 winning the gold in the all-around making her the first american gymnast to win the gold in the all-around.

  • HOLY CRAP! She ROCKS!

  • cpandrs you are crazy too think that you think that was 9.9 the vault Mary Lou did deserved a 10. She did the best vault ever and made history by being the first female american gymnast to win gold in the all-around. She is one of the best ever

  • man she makes it look sooo easy!!!

  • That should have been a 9.9.

  • Yeah, she didn't stick either vault.

  • If you would be so kind, please explain why.

    Pin-point the
