@carloskimey no, after 1 trap has closed roughly 5 times, the things that make the trap close become stretched to their full or something like that, so the closing mechanism for that trap stops functioning, making the trap useless, apart from still photosynthesizing. But the plant itself lives on :)

its not a good idea to do that because it wastes the plants energy band to much energy loss can kill it

It's definitely not good for the plant to do that. It takes a lot of energy for it to close, and since your finger will never fully be inside of the trap, it will use up a ton of energy to try and eat it.

Obviously it can't eat your finger, and the digestive acids that it sends out when the prey stops struggling are not nearly enough to hurt you in the least bit. But in terms of the plant's health, it's definitely not recommended that you put your finger in one.

I do agree on the point that it's not a good idea to put a finger in the venus flytrap because it ultimately hurts the plant. However, if you just put your finger in the trap, it doesn't go through the whole digestive process. The flytrap has evolved to detect when they've actually caught prey, or have caught something useless. To put it simply, if the prey isn't struggling for a while, it will reopen 20-ish hours later.

@MasterChief3624 The plant has a way around that. Normally when it catches a bug, the bug is still moving and trying to escape. The hairs on the inside of the plants 'mouth' sense this and then send the digestive fluids to get the nutrients from the captured prey. If you simply just stick your finger in, yes it will close, but the plant won't begin digesting if it doesn't feel anything moving around. This way it doesn't waste energy trying to digest e.g leaves and stuff.
