In her documntary "Touch of Sound", she says she's profoundly deaf. She can barely hear. She can hear fine with hearing aids, but she says she prefers playing without them, saying she can feel the music, and that that's been a far better form of listening for her as a musician.
I was only asking if you considered her not being 100% deaf, cause she actually does admit she isn't. Let's say she "kind of" hears, that's what I meant by "she can't hear the way you do": not as good as we can. Got it?
So if you state she's a liar, you probably have access to some precious info about her. If you don't, then you're the one who says stupid things.
mirzamarco - what a laugh there many said that maybe you haven't heard, Again deaf mean can't hear but hard of hearing mean can hear some maybe you mean that
when evelyn glennie was small she attend aberdeen school for the deaf scotland her head teacher notice her that she is not deaf and send her to hearing school, she still think oh i'm deaf which is not she's a very good liar
@mirzamarco I've personally met her in person in Los Angeles while attending a play in Hollywood. She is an beautiful woman in person! Accusing her of not being 100% deaf is like accusing one of pretending to sign when they are in fact literate! So be careful where you point that finger, mirzamarco. :) Enjoy the performance.
@Sanosuke004 Not sure I was "accusing" her, Sanosuke. She admits she can hear very little and in a strange way, as if it was in a tunnel, or behind a large wall. Now I'm not in her head so I can't be sure how low/bad she actually hears. However, on this basis, we can state she's not 100% deaf, which was my point in the first place. Finally, she's a phenomenally good musician.
@mirzamarco Actually Evelyn is deaf because she can't hear people talk, she reads lips. But with music, she taught herself to hear through her body instead of her ears. She can differentiate different vibrations coming off different notes. I think think it's why she chose marimba, an instrument that gives of massive amounts of vibrations, especially to her feet (with she says is what she mainly uses to listen).
@mirzamarco THANK YOU, no she's not deaf. she' has a minor hearing problem and uses it for her advantage, she's an amazing percussionist yes, she's just not fucking deaf.
she has said many times that she is "profoundly" deaf and that she lost about 80% of her hearing...she has never claimed to be totally deaf. in fact, she explained at a clinic I attended that her condition is totally reversable through surgery but has chosen not to have the surgery because she feels like being profoundly deaf has made her a better musician....
Also, Look up a video on here on Youtube called Young People Talk to Evelyn Glennie and she admits in that interview that she has been dependant on hearing aids since about the age of twelve.
I'm not saying that she is a con because I would consider her one of the foremost percussion performers in the world today and not just anybody could do what she does. She is an amazing performer, I just think that she should not lie about being fully deaf
ya... she slowly lost her hearing at a later age. so she was well trained in word articulation... and her hearing was last slowly so im sure she dealt with the change quite well as far as speaking goes.
This clip is of Evelyn Glennie (now Dame Evelyn), world famous solo percussionist, and Sesame Street regular Linda Bove (who appeared on Broadway in Children of a Lesser God). The significance is the BOTH ARE DEAF. Evelyn does not use Sign Language, and Linda authored two Sign Language books for Sesame Street (and here keeps using the Sign for "Now??").
I looked at it a few more times and Evelyn is signing "I tell you to ratatat." (3 sign words). Not exactly a complete and polished Sign sentence and only half a notch above pantomime. As it is American Sign I would suppose that it was completely foreign to Evelyn, who probably had to be specially taught those 3 signs.
A follow-up. Actually 4 signs: I, tell you, to, ratatat. "To" is really the only sign that isn't also pantomime. Perhaps Evelyn sat down with someone to learn this sentence in sign. I shouldn't complain, it definitely is better signing than I've seen used in a lot of TV dramas.
Actually she signs I TELL-YOU WHEN HIT-DRUM. "TO" is not really a sign in ASL since it's included in the verb (much like Spanish). Granted, her prosody and facial grammar aren't the best (like you said, someone probably had to sit her down and teach her that sentence--most likely Linda), but it's definitely not pantomime.

she doesn't know how to use sign language it is because she is not deaf she can hear whole like normal hearing people she is liar and it about time she speak out the truth that she is not deaf
Yeah, that's not true. She has a little bit of residual hearing, but she is profoundly deaf. It's not like she'd like about it for publicity... she doesn't even want people to know that she's deaf.
Lol played that one last year! Nvr got to perform it tho specially not that fast
