It's a combination of both. Kansas played an awful game and UNI capitalized on that. If Kansas plays an average game, they beat UNI by double digits.... playing their worst game of the season... they lose by 2.

To anyone that isn't a UNI fan, this is a huge shock. But we've seen this coming all season. We've actually seen this coming the last 2-3 years...the talent was always there, they were a just an inexperienced team before. Didn't look out of their element at all this year though...they knew exactly what they were doing!

UNI played their hearts out and came to play smart basketball...the way they were taught and coached to. Kansas may be a powerhouse program, but they also have the biggest egos in the sport...it caught up to them here. But I wouldn't even go as far as saying it was choking...here Kansas was just flat-out OUT PLAYED.

An upset is one thing...Shoulda never happened with a team like that but what REALLY shoulda never happened is the fact that Kansas trailed ALL game and at one point were down by as many as 12. That is somewhat pathetic. The real truth is that most upsets happen not because it was an extraordinary day for the underdog, but rather the favorites not "getting up" for the game. Its a damn shame

@bro987 Well basketball wasn't invented in Kansas, but Massachusetts, I remember this from a trivia question at a sports bar I used to go to. It became popular back east, then when Naismith moved to Kansas years later he brought basketball with him, and intruduced it there.

Yes he brought the idea of putting a ball through a hoop to Kansas. He wrote the rules and made it into an actual game with Phog Allen.... The University of Kansas has possession of the original document, "The First 13 Rules of Basketball". There's photage of Naismith practicing with a KU team still using the peach basket and poking the ball out with a stick.

@fol2005 Yeah its is pretty well known that the popularity of the game exploded while he was at Kansas, but he did write the 13 basic rules in 1891, and games were played under those rules well before he was ever at ku, with peach baskets and soccer balls. He founded the ku program with phog allen. He even named it basketball while still in the northeast. It's a great game, there are many articles about it on the net.

Kansas should have easily won the game. No excuses, including injuries. A team should be more versatile than that. I give a massive amount of credit to Northern Iowa! They didn't have anything to lose, they were just having fun! Who knew they could take down the top seed in the tournament in the process! Congrats to them!
