Has anyone ever thought that this song could be about how God gave Jesus to die on the cross. Then he's angry at us as humans for crucifying him. Like we are the gods, he is talking about in the song. Because in a way we all think we are gods and have all the power to make descisions, but more often then not we make all the wrong ones... and destroy what is good and pure in the world. I have finally come to terms that nothing Thrice could do well ever quite match up to the greatness that is the Alchemy Index. The way the album flows like 4 albums and the themes of it are so great without losing substance.
To further the connection between this and Melting Point of Wax...the latter is written from Icarus' point of view, speaking to his father. Daedalus is reversed. If I'm not mistaken, Dustin became a father some time between writing those two songs. Very cool change of perspective, both on a musical and a personal level, and two excellent songs to boot.
Song is just plain brilliant imo. Completely captures the perspective of Daedalus and I just love how there is a sliver of hope in the beginning and than the despair and anxiety slowly builds through the song until it turns in to total anguish when Icarus falls into the sea. Both the lyrics and music to it convey it so perfectly.

Thrice is absolutely amazing. You can't even compare it to today's music. All of their albums, hell, all of their songs, have different styles. This and Broken Lungs are my two favorite on this album.
Now, as for this song... it starts off on an almost happy note, the chance to be free. But then, as has been pointed out, it quickly spirals down into a song of mourning. That's just my two cents.
Probably worth it to mention that this isn't the only song that refers to the story of Icarus & Daedalus. The Melting Point of Wax also refers to this.
I'm sure you have all seen that "Led Zep" Hoodie/Shirt with a guy on it with these feather wings falling apart. Its Icarus of course! ( I know this is obvious, but its a great picture)
The music and lyrics in this song paint a strikingly sad picture. If I close my eyes @ 2:40 ,I can see Icarus lose altitude and finally plunge into the sea. I swear, the final chord in that sequence, sounds just like a splash to me.
Daedalus was put in the labyrinth by Minos, which was on an island. Daedalus made wings out of wax and feathers for him and his son, Icarus, to fly away from there. During the flight, Daedalus gets distracted and falls asleep while Icarus climbs higher towards the sun, melting his wings.

Dunno, Thrice has always been pretty true to who they are. Their popularity is still really large, especially compared to early on. I don't think they're as focused on record sales as they are making music from the heart. And that's what makes them so amazing.

Everyone chill. It's a song about a Greek myth. The Greeks believed in multiple Gods. I find it extremely artistic that Dustin takes a modern phrase, "Oh, God!", and changed it to "Oh, Gods!", because that's what Daedalus would have said. It's not anti Christian, Thrice doesn't believe in multiple Gods, and if you're making those arguments, frankly, you're an idiot. It's a beautiful song with beautifully artistic lyrics. Open your eyes (and ears), and remove your head from your ass.

The music and lyrics in this song paint a strikingly sad picture. If I close my eyes @ 2:40 ,I can see Icarus lose altitude and finally plunge into the sea. I swear, the final chord in that sequence, sounds just like a splash to me.

Daedalus was put in the labyrinth by Minos, which was on an island. Daedalus made wings out of wax and feathers for him and his son, Icarus, to fly away from there. During the flight, Daedalus gets distracted and falls asleep while Icarus climbs higher towards the sun, melting his wings.

Dunno, Thrice has always been pretty true to who they are. Their popularity is still really large, especially compared to early on. I don't think they're as focused on record sales as they are making music from the heart. And that's what makes them so amazing.

Everyone chill. It's a song about a Greek myth. The Greeks believed in multiple Gods. I find it extremely artistic that Dustin takes a modern phrase, "Oh, God!", and changed it to "Oh, Gods!", because that's what Daedalus would have said. It's not anti Christian, Thrice doesn't believe in multiple Gods, and if you're making those arguments, frankly, you're an idiot. It's a beautiful song with beautifully artistic lyrics. Open your eyes (and ears), and remove your head from your ass.

Honestly, I think you are getting a little too worked up, but yes: I agree that, that comment is frustrating. I don't understand how this thread got so mussed up. While some of the comments about there being Christian undertones in Thrices lyrics is valid, it is not the case here. It's Greek mythology, NOT Christianity.

i agree. I currently go to a private christian school (and ironically play in the [chapel praise and regular/marching] band under director named eddie xD) and am agnostic. what drove me away more than anything was people claiming to be for god then not knowing the first thing about being religious. =/ there ARE people out there, dont get me wrong, but they grow fewer and fewer every day, or so it seems...

well Dustin being a a talented song writer and hes well known for having lots of metaphors in his lyrics and he is a christian so he obviously incorperates biblical stuff into his lyrics. Maybe there is christian relevance in these lyrics, just have to study them a bit more.
