i love this. i was lucky to see lizzy on this tour and i've since seen eric bell playing this song live. i just wish lizzy hadn't got darren wharton and his poxy keyboard. the band didn't need him.
This is definitely Eric Bell. The playing style sounds 100% like him, and a dedicated guitarist such as myself has got to recognize the distinctive sound of single-coil pickups on this recording. And as we all know, Eric Bell was really the only dedicated Strat-player in Lizzy.
In truth,I wouldnt care who is playing guitar,as long as they arent trying to sing the lead vocals.Theres only one guy who can ever do that,in my eyes.Thats Phil Lynott,Philo. My Love forever. Sigh,..(sorry,but I got a huge crush on him.)
if you know anything about thin lizzy guitarists over the years you should hear that it's SCOTT GORHAM who is starting off the sound check. and if i'm not mistaken ERIC BELL joins in. so no doubt all the lads that where there that night got to play a bit of the song. it's only my take on it but if you listen to old songs each guitarist has his own unique sound and style.
That is brilliant to hear again, got that on tape here somewhere, there is also a soundcheck of The rocker on it, thanx Blacksabfan, by the way thats definetly Eric Bell on guitar, John Sykes and Darren didn't play on that, just Scott, Phil, Brian, & Eric.
The purpose of a sound check is not performance but rather for the sound engineers as well as artists to get dialed in to levels and ambience and personality of the specific room.
In particular, the beginning songs of a sound check normally don't sound very good from a technical aspect.
To be honest, I like to hear the sound check if I can (only usually possible in small venues) because not only do you get extra, quality music, you also get more of the real artist coming out rather than the 'public' persona............
Never heard a poor performance from Lizzy till now. Drums are way off. Could give the benefit of doubt and blame the monitors. Also they're monotonous which leads me to suspect it's the drum tech or other bod hitting them. Never mind.
Thin Lizzy..what a band. After interviews Phil would say...'yeh I know yer can play.. but can yer fight??
definetly not gorham, the lead doesnt have the vibrato of moore, sykes wouldnt have the finesse for this, so that leaves bell, with moore in the background with bits of harmony. listen from 4.00, bell definetly. unless midge ure was hanging around?!? and in terms of guitar sound this is eric bells strat equiped with humbuckers. neck pickup selected. nice.
Eric had and still has a superb vibrato ! Maybe he was out of practise when he played this .. but it doesn't sound like him here. I played his strat when I met him playing in my local pub in 1990 .. same strat he has had since the late 60's.
@Micku91 Yes this one and 'Dont believe a word... even to thin lizzy are covering this song, they still make it sound like it is theirs which is great
I'm not exactly what else is on the soundcheck. I'll have to ask the gentleman I got this track from. I do know that Eric Bell and Gary Moore were around for it, and it's listed as 80 minutes on one of the Lizzy bootleg sites...but no track listing. During the show, Moore played on Black Rose, and Robertson played on Emerald, so those might be part of the soundcheck as well. I'll ask him for you next time we chat.
Could be. The person I got it from wasn't sure, but did say that Gorham didn't particularly like playing this song and Lynott didn't feel he was very good at playing it (hence all the jokes he made about Scott not knowing it). Sykes was brought up but it doesn't sound like him. Eric Bell played it during the actual show, and was around during the soundcheck, so it could be him. I don't really know. You could be right.
ERIC!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! And he"s AWESOME!!!!!!!

Yeah, but this was prior to the gig where Lynott brought back all his previous guitarists for a guest appearance. Except Snowy...haha.
I personally think it's Eric Bell. Not 100% on that though.
blacksabfan 3 years ago
Why did they hate Snowy so much after he left? He must have left on bad terms, but I have no idea what they were.
denton908 2 years ago
Snowy did leace because he wasn't to keen on the Band's Drug usage. Pity though.
