@nixongill That was April 24th, 1981. (They only played in Athens once) There's audio for that show too and I have it, It's not in the best quality but I've heard much worse. I should upload it to Youtube under my second account some time.
The visual senses is not pleasant to the sight senses . Absolutely made my visual sense work overtime and it gave me a friggin headache. Would've enjoyed this more if it wasn't so choppy. Love the song. Disliked the video.
it's about the divide between people who fight in the various conflicts around the globe, and the englands glory/striking beauty matches, not sure, but good track, played it once to a mate, who couldn't get the start, but then knew the rest of the track.
@vorkutaman you're absolutely right by saying you have to look for good music now days. there are some bands that keep a classic rock feel, if you will, like -okta logue-. there are also underground bands like -larry and his flask- who seem to have joined different genres together and through that created a unique sound
One of the better live recordings of them I've heard. Black Sea was the first album of theirs I got back in 82'. This one was the second and it only reinforced how I felt they were one of the greatest bands I'd ever heard. For years I searched for videos of them and when I did find one it was no where near the quality of this recording. Andy must have been on the verge of his retiring from live performances and I could see and hear why. He sounds much more confident and assured here.
Terry Chambers is such an amazing drummer. From a quiet, deft touch to a heart pounding time bomb.
Too bad Andy Partridge drove him away the year after this song was made. Eventually, Partridge's out of control ego would result in the same for the rest of his talented bandmates.
@32INCHSTRIPER Dave Gregory left in '99 saying he was fed up with Andy. And Colin Moulding has stopped speaking to Andy altogether now. I'm sure they stuck around for as long as they did in large part because Andy's such a genius. But that genius came at a price.
I always wondered, why XTC wasn't bigger. I still have no answer to that. Between them, The Cure and The Beat (I always got late to the parties!), I had a fab time in the mid to late 80s.
@hlhr I think the main reason is they didn't like touring. Yeah. One of my fav bands from the 80's as well. I find The New Pornographers being very influenced by them.
@LeighTheGenius I then, am one of the envied and you...have a great ear.. and taste for one of the greatest era's in music history. Today? Garbage indeed. Techno copy cat repetitive crap. Ours was an era of instrumentals, lyrics and meaning. Talent, not posing, marketing gimmicks to make quick bucks at a compromise to the gift of music.Thank you.
@LeighTheGenius That garbage only goes as far as you see. Or does it? The New Pornographers are one of my favorite current bands, I also like Flipron's music but they're a very small band. The Shout Out Louds don't seem bad either. But music is all subjective.
@LeighTheGenius I disagree. There are some really good bands out there right now and I'm 57 years old. I love this band, but every decade has its own great bands, then its own Justin Biebers. You have to look for the treasure. These guys never made it that big. Lots of great bands never make it as big as they should because the people who decide the tastes are often bean counters interested only in the bottom line, their god: money. The 80's did have a bunch of exceptional bands, though!
@christoJihad2 So true, I'm 20 and recently I've been finding bands I like left and right. I've been looking and most of the bands I just got into are from the same time period XTC were active live, One of the bands was formed in 1988 though.
@101Volts From '65 to about '85 Poo/rock was still frest and young. Now it is just repetition of the past. Shapes one=ce thrown by the Who and Zep when they were new and revolutionary, the same cod rebellion now, the same BS. Rock died about 25 years ago
@tigerarmyrule Yeah, I keep thinking there's only so much that a mainstream audience will want and that there's only so much in the world to give, Too. And the deeper you dig, The more complicated it can get...
Yeah I would echo this comment too. Me I'm 53 and in the 90s turned my sons on to "Great Big Sea" ; "Yes" , 'The beatles', 'The Stones', 'The WHo', 'U-2' and Emminen ; 'Fine young Canibals' etc.
Now they have gotten me into "Fort Minor" , "Swollen Members" etc....
I cleared all the dead vids from me faves today, must've lost 75% of them when you closed down Tone, so glad to have this, one of my fave bands, cheers!
