If you like judo try BJJ, it will definitely help you out once you get on the ground, they are very similar and BJJ is based on judo techniques, but the focus is on what to do once you are on the ground
dude...you're awesome...i tried karate (which isn't similar to judo i know) but i failed...didn't get the moves fast enough...i wanted to do wrestling but got laughed at because of my 'skinniness'...i'm slender, not skinny, i could take out anyone...if i exercised enough...idk maybe it was cuz i'm a girl...:( if so then that's sad...you're awesome...and lucky that you're bulky, you can beat people up if you wanted to...all i can do is become a stand up comedy...or a sit down comedy...
@TheSpontaneousWonder taekwondo might just be for you :D, if u dont know what it is, its pretty much a kicking martial art coming from korea, being skinny probably means you have a lot of flexibility :D you should try it, you´ll be able to take out anybody twice your weight with one kick, or twice your height, if u could reach his head:D you should try it, a lot of people i fight against are girls, and some kick my behind cause of their speed, and im pretty strong, you should try it :D

My dad took Judo. He's the scariest guy I know. ;P You get to grow up to be big and strong - Dad could've kept it up a little more to avoid becoming robust, but we can't do everything. lol
Nice video, I would really like to see you throw One together going more depth into judo, you seem to have a knack at narrating videos well...look out hollywood!
yhea i don't get that either. i'm a mixed martial artist, but i mainly do Tae Kwon Do. but even it tkd we dont fight with that big of belt differences between us. im not in seniors yet, but im a black belt, so my main problem is sparring people who out weigh me - by a lot. lol.
at the tournament of which I have a vid, (i didnt get the clip im talking about though) there was a 150lb guy ging up against a 400lb guy...and the light guy was god but lost just because he couldnt move the bigger guy to throw him xD
That's really awesome, even at only yellow belt rank you were kicking some ass. Your ab video will now become my morning workout routine starting tomorrow, along with some pushups. Thank you so much.
Cute! You're actually looking like a judoka now instead of a wrestler! I've just finished up in Germany... got my kneecap twisted about 90 degrees... whoops. It was done gently, though. I'm hobbling back to the states tomorrow. Glad you made this! Maybe it will spark some interest in the sport.
I love judo as well. I recently went into a tournament. Wasn't very gentle either, but hey 1st is 1st. This sport is awesome. I love how you cleared up a lot of things people may think about judo, primarily, there are no strikes (Judo Chop) lol. Nice vid, 5 stars
im not trying to be mean here or anything its just i noticed that at the end when you raised your eyebrows your ears wiggled and i couldnt help laughing out loud! but all in all this is a really good video and i enjoyed watching it!
hahah yes! i just rewound it and watched it over and over and couldn't stop laughing. i wish my ears did that when i raise my eyebrows. people would like me so much more :(
hehe that was funny, if all sport was as funny as that then i would watch it, like if you watch pulp sport and they show all the 'man love moments!' hehe
I am a black belt, and have worked out with wrestlers and BJJ guys and I am guessing that you have a wrestling background. Your kata garuma looks like a wrestlers to me. Also, one of your ippons by way of a cross between a tai otoshi and harai goshi looked like it was pulled off by brute force and explosive power. Anyways, just curious, guessing for fun. Good stuff, keep up the good work.
You're right about the wrestling background, but wrong about the brute force. That was in a beginners tournament, and I don't really see the point of beating people on strength in a novice division. I think it mainly worked (despite the muddled finish) because of the timing. I relaxed right before the attack, caught him just as he was relaxing too, and did a pretty good job unbalancing him. Gotta work on the actual throw now.
Well it looks to me like you have some talent. You said in the beginning that you had some injuries, I am assuming from other sports. I can tell you from experience that if you train smart in Judo, and keep up your conditioning, you can train hard for years and years without injury. Good luck to you, I would vemture to say that you have a good future in Judo.
Welcome to the club. As a 45 years old, I just started it almost 2 years ago. Green belt and I think it's a pitty I didn't start 20 years ago. Btw, your skills doesn't look like yellow belt...
Ahh now we know your secret. Just kidding. :) I would lvoe to see more videos of you in your sport. Just remember that I can always fly up there and give you a massage. :) Would be my honor. :)
Judo is my drug.. for the guys in the street cocaine,LSD,marihuane, extasys, crack, etc for my JUDO because this is not only a sport, is a martial art and a way of life !!! keep doing JUDO !!!
I love watching that part where you pick that guy up and slam him. LOL! Nice job on the music, too, I didn't notice you made it yourself the first time I saw this vid.
aw, that sucks that you can't run anymore! i can't imagine. i hope that doesn't happen to me. i run 6 miles 3 times a week. i know it's not a ton of running, but i worry that i'll have hip problems eventually too. i was born with something wrong with my hips and had to be in a brace for a while as a baby. then to top it off i was a competitive gymnast and cheerleader. my hips hurt pretty often after runing. i'd hate not to be able to run anymore *knocks on wood*
It does. I only ran distance to train for other sports, but I used to really enjoy it. Now just thinking about running on pavement hurts. Seriously, find someplace where you can run on flat grass and it'll give you a lot of extra mileage.
thanks for the advice! even though i really love running outside, i try to run mainly on a treadmill, which i've heard is a lot better than running on pavement. if i find i'm having trouble with that i'll definitely do like you said and run on grass. thanks again!
I know, I've probably hyped it too much now. It's not going to be amazing, but it'll be so much better than it would have if I didn't put all the work in.
Cool. I've always wondered what Judo was like. I attend Kung-Fu sometimes and like it, but haven't lately because of Earth Core and school...and being lazy. I was just inspired by action movies, they always seem to have a thrill and i wanted to attend Karate but dad thought it was harmful. My parents are nice.
From what I've been told Judo is a very popular youth sport world wide. Apparently in a lot of countries it serves the same purpose that youth gymnastics does in the United States. The submission and choking doesn't come in until you're a older player.
Lol,that's interesting. So, since your older, would Judo be the same for younger kids? Would it incorporate anything like gymnastic exercises? Good job, by the way.
My brother was into Judo untill he whent to some mountan camp for it, and came out early with a broken-in-three-places leg. Some of the doctors swore it was a football injery. He had to be air-lifted out of the mountans. He didnt care so much after he got the pain killers. he actuly says that was the best and worst time of his life.
I did Judo in high school. Love the sport. It's really amazing how easily the higher classed more advanced Judo guys read moves. It's so natural and fluid.
I used to live in Australia, and a mate of mine taught it for 2 dollars a week. Here, in America, where I live I can't find Shotokan at all, and it'd be too expensive if I could find it. Sucks.
That does suck. Sadly the dojo I workout at is not free, but it's still very reasonable. They basically charge enough to keep the place open and running.
Ah, yes martial arts. I too practice martial arts...well, it's just Okinawan karate,it's super informal.
Judo seems interesting, especially as there's not a huge amount of physical contact needed. However, there is no way I could do this because I have NO upper body strength. I'll stick to the punching, kicking and weapon throwing. (Ah, yes, the weapons)
Nice take down in the first match. I think you're actually quite good!
And oddly enough, karate cause me more injuries then anything else I do!
You don't need upper body strength to do judo. Leg strength is a lot more important, and the really good players use very little strength at all. In theory its all about using momentum and balance.
And then my back injury comes into play. However, when I finish the current study I'm under, maybe I'll try this one. Thanks for the cool footage, and good luck in your other tournaments!
I actually won that one, but I got a little lucky in the bracket. The guy I slammed was a lot better than me, and would probably beat me if we went again or he'd seen one of my other matches. He just underestimated things a little.
Yes, there are mild alternatives, sometimes with good health coverage. My nephew changed his hobby after a rough tournament at the Ernie Reyes West Coast Martial Arts studio. In his case, he turned to the gentle sport of hockey. When he smashed his helmet into the boards and was knocked out during a hockey game, he had no problem obtaining treatment from his health plan.
I used to do okinowan go ju ryu (sorry about the spelling) It means hard and soft, but I had to stop because I have just way too many college classes at all hours.
The nice thing about judo is you can do it when ever you're able. A few months ago I was going four times a week, but I'm only going once a week now, because me leg can't take anymore than that.
A lot of things. First you're wearing a gi in judo, which adds a whole new element (you don't have to worry about some one choking you with your own singlet in wrestling). Most of the throws are different because of the grips you can get on a gi. Also, most of the rules are different, and of course there's the submission aspect when you're on the mat. But yes, there are a lot of overlaps.
What are you talking about? The higher amplitude the throw, the more points you get in freestyle. And you certainly don't lose points in folkstyle as long as you bring them down to their back and not their head. Lateral drops are fun.
What is your wrestling? I wrestled American folk style (scholastic wrestling, or what you do in high school and college) for quite awhile and did throws all the time.
URA NAGE was awesome display of athletism...belts dont mean anything..skills do.
And that slam took all the air out of the opponent and maybe rattle a few brain matter.

From what I've been told Judo is a very popular youth sport world wide. Apparently in a lot of countries it serves the same purpose that youth gymnastics does in the United States. The submission and choking doesn't come in until you're a older player.
JackDanyells 4 years ago
Lol,that's interesting. So, since your older, would Judo be the same for younger kids? Would it incorporate anything like gymnastic exercises? Good job, by the way.

Ouch, that looked like it hurt.

Nice concise explanation of the sport! :)

I took one percocet after I had knee surgery. It certainly was an interesting experience.

I did Judo in high school. Love the sport. It's really amazing how easily the higher classed more advanced Judo guys read moves. It's so natural and fluid.
Hexuss 4 years ago
Yep. I hope people will check out some of the Olympic and Pan Am matches you can watch on YouTube. It's pretty amazing stuff.

I did Shotokan Karate for 7 years. I miss it. It was one of those few things in life that I'm truly talented at.
AustralianStallion90 4 years ago
Why can't you start doing it again?
JackDanyells 4 years ago
I used to live in Australia, and a mate of mine taught it for 2 dollars a week. Here, in America, where I live I can't find Shotokan at all, and it'd be too expensive if I could find it. Sucks.
AustralianStallion90 4 years ago
That does suck. Sadly the dojo I workout at is not free, but it's still very reasonable. They basically charge enough to keep the place open and running.
JackDanyells 4 years ago
lol you fucking picked the guy up and droped him
wing189 4 years ago
Wow, that's sick. You're pretty damn strong!
I'm a brown belt in an Okinawan form of martial arts called Uechi Ryu. More of the traditional martial arts stuff.
Selachim 4 years ago
Ah, yes martial arts. I too practice martial arts...well, it's just Okinawan karate,it's super informal.
Judo seems interesting, especially as there's not a huge amount of physical contact needed. However, there is no way I could do this because I have NO upper body strength. I'll stick to the punching, kicking and weapon throwing. (Ah, yes, the weapons)
Nice take down in the first match. I think you're actually quite good!
And oddly enough, karate cause me more injuries then anything else I do!
Evagirl77 4 years ago
You don't need upper body strength to do judo. Leg strength is a lot more important, and the really good players use very little strength at all. In theory its all about using momentum and balance.
JackDanyells 4 years ago
And then my back injury comes into play. However, when I finish the current study I'm under, maybe I'll try this one. Thanks for the cool footage, and good luck in your other tournaments!

Jack has dimensions. Layers, if you will. Sweet!
I love at the end when your ears move. You should make that your signature.

I have to ask. How did you do in your tournament?
TheDoomBug 4 years ago
I actually won that one, but I got a little lucky in the bracket. The guy I slammed was a lot better than me, and would probably beat me if we went again or he'd seen one of my other matches. He just underestimated things a little.
JackDanyells 4 years ago
Damn. You just SLAMED him to the ground. If you were to slam ME that way, I wouldn't have been "OKAY".
But anywho, nice vid. And nice Judo skills. =)

Yikes. That doesn't look gentle at all. But, I'm glad to see you're still a super hero after all these years. :-D

Haha, thanks but I don't feel like one much these days. As far as I know Superman ever needed an HMO.

He applied for krypton-poisoning coverage, but got turned down because it was listed as an experimental procedure.

Another nice vid. Keep it up ^_^

Yeah, that was the first match for both of us that day, and I think he won all of his other ones after that.

This reminds me of scholastic wrestling...which I was pretty decent at back in the day. Hmmm, maybe I'll get into this.
billgrip 4 years ago
It's a lot more similar to freestyle than scholastic wrestling, both in the pacing and scoring. You'd probably like it though.
JackDanyells 4 years ago
Yes, there are mild alternatives, sometimes with good health coverage. My nephew changed his hobby after a rough tournament at the Ernie Reyes West Coast Martial Arts studio. In his case, he turned to the gentle sport of hockey. When he smashed his helmet into the boards and was knocked out during a hockey game, he had no problem obtaining treatment from his health plan.

Well at least he went with a low impact sport.

I used to do okinowan go ju ryu (sorry about the spelling) It means hard and soft, but I had to stop because I have just way too many college classes at all hours.
I'll go back one of these days

The nice thing about judo is you can do it when ever you're able. A few months ago I was going four times a week, but I'm only going once a week now, because me leg can't take anymore than that.
JackDanyells 4 years ago
Dude thats awesome. You pinned that guy great.

whats the difference between judo and wrestling except for the throws
Manamation 4 years ago
A lot of things. First you're wearing a gi in judo, which adds a whole new element (you don't have to worry about some one choking you with your own singlet in wrestling). Most of the throws are different because of the grips you can get on a gi. Also, most of the rules are different, and of course there's the submission aspect when you're on the mat. But yes, there are a lot of overlaps.
JackDanyells 4 years ago
well, you cant throw at all in wrestling, or at least u lose points for it
Manamation 4 years ago
What are you talking about? The higher amplitude the throw, the more points you get in freestyle. And you certainly don't lose points in folkstyle as long as you bring them down to their back and not their head. Lateral drops are fun.
JackDanyells 4 years ago
mabye in judo but not my wrestling
Manamation 4 years ago
What is your wrestling? I wrestled American folk style (scholastic wrestling, or what you do in high school and college) for quite awhile and did throws all the time.
JackDanyells 4 years ago
really? in mine you have to land on them to get points
Manamation 4 years ago
lol at the 2nd clip. And I kinda guessed you had a hobby outside of YouTube :)
