I remember the Channel 4 Daily, it didn't remain a shambles despite what's shown here and it developed into a decent format. When C4 axed it in 1992 in favour of The Big Breakfast, that was the beginning of C4 selling out to making £££ over quality programming and the slow but sure end of their commitment to public service broadcasting.
I remember watching this in the morning as a kid. I'm sure there were some kids bits at some point in this, includng the American Dennis the Menace. Also recall Countdown Masters as well.
Transmission-wise, the programme was all so automated it tended to feel a bit rigid and looking at those long lead-ins to features which Mark has kindly uploaded, it wasn't exactly as pacey as it could have been.
When even the on-screen clock indicates 15 second increments using a whole one of those just to lead in to Countdown Masters and that 2 part lead in to Kickback made it very stop-start.
It certainly was a bold and distinctive concept, though. I wonder who came up with it?
The music was by Raff Ravenscroft - session musician (he of the Baker Street sax solo!) - a beautifully thought out concept with a full length theme and a host of linked section themes & short stings.
Bill Bingham's voice as continuity announcer was great, though - it was quite a Radio 4 feel and definitely offered an alternative to the sofa-chats that we still see today on BBC & ITV. Whereas, of course, Channel 4 just gave up on the whole concept.
A valiant attempt by C4 to get in on the breakfast TV market. It was all too boring and staid however...'a special report on the IMF meeting in Washington'...zzzzzz. Big Breakfast was so completely radically different.
I really enjoyed the music though. Anyone know who wrote it?
How would Countdown Masters have done? Bearing in mind the letters and numbers games were on at a time when not necessarily everyone had woken up. It was pulled when the first Gulf War broke out and did not subsequently return.
I LOVED this show! Great theme/opening titles! Great news titles too. Carol was great. Yeah, in hindsight, the "Countdown" stuff and "Streetwise" and so on.... WHY? God, that show must have been ridiculously expensive to make. (as well as Business Daily and news from Tokyo, Washington etc.)
does anyone have the ident for COMIC BOOK, the bit of Channel Four Daily which showed a cartoon in the morning..? That'd be so cool to see again! Thanks for upping this clip man!!

What were the dot's under the clock for again?
birdy100 1 year ago
@birdy100 The dots underneath the clock basically for every 15 seconds in the minute, it's not been done since in the UK.

Carol Barnes was a tortured woman. She never recovered from the death of her child in a sky diving accident.

I can't pretend to have ever liked Channel 4 Daily, yet I can't praise them enough for trying out something new.
It was an effort, which is more than Channel 4 can claim to be making today.
