  • Peter is now on twitter!! @peter_karrie. Its really him...he is new to twitter so please follow him there.

  • @StripedTerror521 I guess that was a headesk??

  • 8:50 ...the most heartbreaking moment in musical theatre history

  • His voice was great, but it was his acting that blew me away. The way he moved his hands, his growl..really awesome.

  • ladies and gentleman - the one and only Phantom that terrifies me

  • @MUSEmaniakOO I know right?!?! Every other Erik I'm like "STAY WITH HIM CHRISTINE!!!!STAYYYYYY!!!!!!" But with Peter Karrie "RUN CHRISTINE!!!!!RUNNNNNNNNN!!!!" 0.O

But at least he played it like the Leroux version :)

  • Best Phantom since Lon Chaney. Leroux would be pleased.

  • I kind of love that he plays it like this. It's not my favorite, but seriously -- you would go more than a little insane if you were a deformed musical genius living beneath an opera house. As fun as the suave and seductive Phantoms are, they're not especially realistic.

  • he is probably the only Phantom that actually scares me.

  • I love Karrie's unique portayal, it's great that people can experiment and expand the role... but this is one of the few times I'm like, " Run Christine and for Gods sake don't look back!"

  • "you. try.my.patience, make your chose!!" HOLY SMOKES chills

  • if i was in elizabeth's shoes, or dress rather, on the part when he says "you... tried .. my.... patience..." I would've been scared shitless

  • Honest to God my second fave Phantom this man is amazing!!!!

  • @dethe8ter Who's your favorite?? Mine is so John Cudia... or Michael Crawford!

  • @phantomphan4ever1 My favorite is the amazing Michael Crawford I loved how when he played the role Michael was gone and Erik was there Cudia was another good one as well.

  • @dethe8ter I sometimes don't even include Michael Crawford on my list because HE'S MICHAEL CRAWFORD!

  • @phantomphan4ever1 Perhaps I should start doing that let the other ones have a sporting chance and I also liked Howard's Phantom as well Brad Little was my first Phantom so he has a special place in my heart.

  • I'm pretty sure he just scared the socks off of Elizabeth with the "you try my patience" growl. Other than that, he is like the insane Phantom on hyper drive. Not necessarily a bad thing, though. He just moves and changes faces so fast, I wouldn't be surprised if Elizabeth wasn't holding back laughter with some of the gestures and voices he made at points, no offense.

  • THAT BITCH!!!! running away when he says "i love you". no wonder his heart broke :'(

  • He plays it like a freak ,like something from the original universal horror serries like bela leqousiey ,frankenstein or the wolfman ,he is awsome ! I love it played like this!!

  • "youuuuuuu've tried my patience"

He just turned into Darth Sidious!

    This guy is awesome btw

  • Wow! Peter Karrie is my favorite Final Lair Phantom. Fantastic!!!

Thanks so much for sharing. =)

  • I friggin love his "You try my patience. Make your choice!" line. It's perfect. I could totally see Leroux!Erik saying it that way. :D

  • He does have a very Leroux/Chaney style in his hands and attitude. Bravo to him! I love that each actor tried to give their Phantom a certain personality that they think the Phantom should act like. His is the book version and I like that!

  • I love how he growls and moves his fingers. It's very,Leroux-ish. And I like that. :)

  • dont worry he is doing the phantom again this year 2011 in canada

  • oh my gosh, i just couldn't stand it! it was just tooooo much! i liked how he made it his own, but it was almost comical at how over the top he was.....goodness gracious lol

  • I really dislike his singing, but his acting is superb! De Grazia also is my favorite Christine.

Omg, was he growling at her (you try my pacience)? Scary!!

  • Goodness me...If I were Christine when he does that you try my patience...I think I'd die...That was sooooooooooo twisted and frightening.. I got shivers all up and down.

  • I LOVE HOW INSANE HE IS IN THIS SCENE, as though its his last hope, i love the twitching and the desperation.... AND OMG, when Raoul goes 'i love her' i've never seen a phantom act like that, its as though he wants to show some compassion but he's just to angry at the world because 'the world showed no compassion' to him so why should he? truly amazing acting, such a unique take on this poor soul!!

  • @LOVxxE However i wish he'd been a little more... human... like Michael Crawford, more tortured and tender! Still amazing though! very unique....

  • The most intimidating "You try my patience..." EVER.

It's just downright terrifying the way he does it.

  • Wow, he's amazing.

  • Karrie's is truly a unique phantom.

  • awww hes so cute!! he doesnt know what to do with his hands!! x)

  • wow can't stop watching this so good

such a different take on role

  • This guy is simply fantastic. The sudden mood changes, the ange and insanity, he is a perfect Phantom. And i agree, he is totally Leroux based!

  • No one does "batshit insane" like Peter Karrie!

  • WOW. I wish I could have seen Karrie. This is fantastic. I've seen 7 different Phantoms, and I can clearly see that this is the best performance acting wise of a Phantom.

  • lol I love how Christine was all "NO TOUCHY!" At 50 sec XD

But totally. Totally creepy. He has almost this Austic feel about him in his manorisms. With the descriptions of him I always suspected that he might have had asbergers or something like that. And his fixation was Christine. y'know?

He was hella good at everything except for calligraphy. They said that his handwriting was like a child that dipped a match head in ink and TRIED to pen something.

  • 5:12 was rather creepy!

    Amazing, I cried.

  • he inspires me as an actress and that makes me happy

  • 5:12 I... Can't... Stop... Watching...

  • Our favourite scene...

    love love love it.....<3

  • maybe not the best singing phantom, but by FAR THE BEST ACTOR for phantom I've seen on youtube!

  • An absolutely entrancing final lair sequence. I do wish that the camera had pulled back a little more, Elizabeth de Grazia's portrayal of Christine has me intrigued, especially at his "You try my patience..." because he terrified ME and she didn't seem to be fazed. Peter Karrie seems like a wonderful Phantom, I'd love to see more of his performance.

  • He is obviously a talented man. His voice has that bit of creepiness to it, which is necessary to play a good Phantom. However, I don't personally care for his interpretation of the role. I prefer the heart-broken Phantom over the angry one.

  • @musicalmeg19 But you can understand where the anger would/could come from, could you not?...Nearly a whole, life lived underground, away from the light, away from people, away from the normal everyday life that you and I enjoy - simply because society/he couldn't accept the disfigurement of his face. (And he, Erik/The Opera Ghost, certainly would have more than enough reason to be angry - wouldn't he?)

I think Peter Karrie plays both sides of the character EXTREMELY well!

  • @GhostGal5 Thank you for your response. I certainly appreciate what you wrote me. As a young woman who has NOT had the best of lives, from an early age I've connected with the Phantom on a deep level. Of course I understand and appreciate his anger. I was merely expressing in my earlier comment why this isn't my favorite Phantom. I didn't mean to imply that he played him incorrectly -- it's just an interpretation that isn't my favorite. But thanks for your thoughts.

  • season brothers dad

  • this scene always makes me cry, no matter who it is!! i always want to get up and give Erik a big hug to make him feel better when watching this....poor Erik!!! : '-( excellent performance by Peter!! :-)

  • Her dress his huuuuuge!!! Love this musical so much. I've seen it twice. Never fails to amaze me. Lovely.<3333

  • over acting

  • @multihappydayz - Better than *under-acting* I say.

  • disgrace to gerard butler, but i am a crazy fan for him so it wasnt sooooooo bad.

  • Overacted. Fake. Terrible. I mean this is truly horrible acting. i would have boo'd and demanded my money back.

  • @thespiswolf

You know nothing about stage acting, obviously.

  • @Elisabetta611 Other than the 20 years of professional stage (both musical theatre and "straight" plays), film, and television experience I have, sunshine, you're right - I know nothing. /sarcasm.

  • @thespiswolf

Obviously not. Given that you fail to grasp the easiest principle of stage acting, cupcake. Close ups of musical stage acting always look like overacting. Given that I have seen several hundreds of MT performances, I know that to be true. Besides, Mr. Karrie is the composer's favorite Phantom, the fans as well as the critics love and respect him. You don't. That's fine. No need to be so rude however. Or is it sour grapes? Are you new to POTO or something? GEEZ!

  • @thespiswolf -- he's amazing.....and widely known for his attention to detail in his performance. andrew lloyd webber chose his as his favorite phantom of all time

  • @Rachtheangel Don't really much care. I don't like what I am seeing here. To me it seems so "acted" that it's not believable.

  • @thespiswolf - I've seen other Phantom's that just stand there and drum out their lines with no emotion, no feeling, no passion. (THOSE are the ones that I don't like at all! The Phantom is such an amazing character - and needs someone who can portray him as such.)

I'd say it's better for someone to infuse their performance with a lot of emotion and make the performance/character seem real - (or, as you call it, "acted) - than for someone to stand there and just walk-through the motions.

  • @GhostGal5 His acting is not real at all in any way, shape, or form. It's fake and way overdone.

  • @thespiswolf

Ok, that may be your perspective/opinion of things, but for thousands of others who have seem him in person/live - what he does is not "fake" or "overdone"! (I have seen him live in concert and literally came out of the auditorium in a semi-trance state!)

  • @GhostGal5 Sorry, I am not blinded by gimmickry. What I see in the above video is nothing less than horrible.

  • @thespiswolf -

Then I am sorry that you are not able to appreciate what others see as "true art". I truly feel sorry for you.

  • @GhostGal5 Oh spare me. Like I would take advice on what is and isn't art from someone who only WATCHES it. When you have 20+ years of acting training and experience under YOUR belt perhaps then you'll have an opinion worth listening to.

  • @thespiswolf -

Then you shouldn't go see performances like this - especially ones like Phantom, that require so much emotion, passion, and feeling! (The Phantom/Erik is a *VERY* complex character - not some "Mary Poppins" that can sing a cheerful song, about a cheerful life, in a cheerful house! His life is full of pain & hurt)

Perhaps these types of performances are not for you. Perhaps you should stay with something simple and fun - such as comedies, or something along those lines...??

  • @GhostGal5 You do realize I make my living as a professional musical theatre actor, right?

  • @thespiswolf

Heh. Yeah, but have you done something like Phantom? Do you understand the character of Erik/The Phantom? (Have you even read the original novel by Leroux?) Are you able to sing and/or act and cause people to fall into a semi-trance state?

  • @GhostGal5 Yes I have done shows like Phantom, I have loved the story since I was a child in the 70's, of course I've read the novel, and I have made audiences laugh, cry, and scream for my blood. Sorry, I am just not impressed by an actor who plays the Phantom as if he were an epileptic with Parkinson's disease.

  • @GhostGal5 Condescending little child, aren't you? I have done everything from Fiddler to OKLAHOMA! to acting and directing a tour of Jekyll & Hyde: the Musical. Shush, now. You're like a 5 years old telling the an adult about how the world is and isn't. It was cute at first.

  • @thespiswolf -

Wow! I am *so* impressed - NOT! (You don't even have any clips of you on your site - so how is one to judge? For so many shows that you say you've starred in - where's the proof?)

  • @GhostGal5 Why would I want to show someone like you clips of my work when you're understanding of what is and isn't good acting is so impaired that you think THIS clip shows it?

  • @thespiswolf -

Why not show everyone else? (Not just me.) If you say you're as good as you are, then by all means - you should share it with the world.

A little hesistation I sense there - no?

  • I love him, i love him, i Love him... did I say I loved Peter Karrie? Oh...well I love him.

  • I love how much deatil he puts into the phsyical and vocal quirks. The near insane mentalstate, the fidgity hands...all of it is great. He may not be the best vocalist but he definitely is one of the strongest actors in this scenes. I put put it up there with Hugh Panaro's acting in this scene

  • Woah..this guy brings The Phantom from Leroux to such light. He's now on my list of top Phantoms;). Wish I could have saw him.

  • I couldn't take my eyes of Karrie throughout the entire scene! You can tell he truly embraces the character of Erik as it was originally written. He makes my top five favorite Phantoms because of his dedication to the book.

  • I love how after she kisses him he grabs her face. He's insane and I love it. The growl is awesome too.

  • i wasnt really sure about this man. he seemed to be a bit overdramatic for the Phantom, but that growl and "you try my patience" was PERFECT i love it!!

  • i love that growl i would have freaked out if i was Christine

  • @Apple3videos he almost sounds like Davy Jones from The Pirates of the Caribbean.

  • I think that Peter Karrie is the best at acting, but John Cudia is the best singing phantom. Michael Crawford is also very good.

  • @lachlunn he reminds me of Christopher Lloyd from Back to the Future! 1:17 made me laugh!

  • Oooh, that growl before the "you try my patience" line ... love it!

  • Sorry but this guy reminds me of a good Frankenstein lol but not Erik. The only thing he has going for him is that he made him totally off his rocker. One thing too, and it is JMO, Peter is too fat to be Erik. He lived in what was basically a cellar with poor nutrition and this guy looks like he has been eating small children for dinner. LOL

  • hm wow i saw that at a play in Florida wow i was shocked i love how the characters made it look so real like they really did it not for acting. i love that about the play<3

  • 2:22

    What a spine-tingling laugh!

    I absolutely adore it.

  • i think he is an amazing phantom and a great singer and actor

  • and a great guy. ive had the pleasure of meeting and singing with him, he is a really down to earth guy....and an awesome phantom!!!

  • I do not really enjoy this mans interpretation of Erik. It is very different...It makes SENSE...but im not a fan! None the less he has a fantastic voice.

  • Love love LOVE his hands. The twitchy, erratic movements remind me so much of Leroux!Erik. Completely insane. I love it. "You... try... my... /patience/..." Terrifying. Honestly. He downright hisses the last word.

I love how he gets all excited at "This haunted face hold no horror for me now", and dejected again at the next line. Poor, unhappy Erik.

I wasn't even paying attention to Christine and Raoul. Nearly forgot they were there. Karrie completely steals the scene. Hell, the whole show.

  • @MissLuxa - He was amazing live...this video just doesnt do him any justice. I had the pleasure seeing PK many times at the Pantages and this video brought back all of the memories and tears. He always had a stellar performance.

  • @MissLuxa Indeed...poor, unhappy Erik.

  • @MissLuxa Amen to that :) he is an outstanding phantom. Very unique in his movements and emotions. I also love the choices he makes. :) Christine sounds terrible in my opinion. Awfull! And yea i didnt really remember her and Raul in this scene. He realy just had my attention the whole time :)

  • @MissLuxa

The Camera man forgot they were there too. Did you notice the camera was focused on Erik the entire time? Not that I'm complaining, he's the best part of this scene anyways!

  • A maniac, in the greatest sense of the word. Such a breathtaking performance.

  • 'You try My patience' - Wonderfull hahah :-) One of my favouite phantoms :-) J.D

  • I love love love him. Such a refreshing and heartbreaking interpretation of a classic role. He really pours his soul into Erik every time he performs. He portrays Leroux Erik very well. I understand how those not familiar with the novel may be a bit jarred. This is our original Phantom!! =)

  • He's the scariest phantom I have ever seen

  • I cracked up laughing when he said, "a mask"

  • I know what you mean it's so high piched like hes crying

  • que exajerado, no sabe actuar

  • True, he is a bit over the top, but... better to be over the top than showing no emotion at all, right?

  • Peter Karrie will always be my favorite Phantom. Sometimes his vocals aren't as pleasing and beautiful as the others, but no one has ever developed the character as much as he did. They all play Erik as some slightly strange and creepy man with a beautiful baritone voice. Peter's Erik is mentally unstable, possibly autistic (because he is such a mastermind in music with no social skills), and maybe even schizophrenic. Peter was so brave to play Erik the way he did, and it paid off.

  • This phantom is very frightening! He's a monster!

  • He's supposed to be.

    That's kinda the point.

  • His Phantom is so deliciously Leroux based! I love him!

  • Que lindas voces tienen los actores n.n

  • In Final Lair it should not. Christine ripped the wig off before FL.

  • I know it is sad ppl mostly base he looks from the 2004 movie which was crap

  • Not in the last scene and if you know the real story he wore a wing and only had 3 or 4 strands of blond hair

  • ic thats sorta gross lol

but i liked the movie and the play...

  • I love to watch the whole first act JOJ and then go to Michael Crawford for the second act until the phantom brings christene to his lair for that I leave it to Peter Karrie. I find this is the best ways you can see the process in which Erik goes completely crazy and becomes irrational. but that is just my opinion please if you get the chance though watch it in that order you wont be sorry

    thanks

  • I must go MC all the way JOJ is good but idk he lacks the mysticism in my opinion

  • Out of all the phantoms I have seen I find that three stand out more than the others Michael C. was the best to originate the role for he gave a great base to start out with for other phantoms John Owen Jones deleivers the best Music of the night hands down his voice is perfect for the song and he looks like he is even enchanting himself while singing and Peter is by far the best when it comes to the second act when the phantom snaps he should have acted more seductive and alluring in the first

  • At first, I didn't really like Peter Karrie's voice and acting, but now I love it! From what I've seen, he's one of the best Phantoms acting-wise

  • wow! The acting was stunning especially the one who played as the phantom. :D

  • His name is Peter Karrie

  • do they not have the part that says down once more to the dugeons of my black despair down we plunge to the prison of my mind down that path into darkness deep as hell

  • The first time I watched this was the first time I've truly seen Erik from Leroux's novel come to life

    Stunning Performance xD

  • Yeah he was describes a 60 year old man no nose and had a short temper!!!

  • This is AWESOME! He really brings the crazy in a way I've never seen anyone bring the crazy to the musical Phantom. I wish I could see some of his other scenes!

  • he does do crazy amazing but so does hugh pnanaro

  • WOW. = ) THe part where he's at the organ and sings " To late, for turning back, to late.." Reminds me a lot of Chaney from the silent film. Leroux would have been proud... just my opinion

  • why does he inspect her face after the kiss? is he afraid that some of his face rubbed off on her or sometin????

  • Disbelief. He can't believe that she touched him, kissed him.......and that she won't shrink from his touch now....

  • Comment removed

  • this man is insane!!! i love it!!!

  • Peter's interpretation of the Phantom is, too my my mind, the bravest and the best. As sad as this scene is, I have never cried at this part for any Phantom -- Until Peter says "Christine" at 9:39. That is HEART WRENCHING.

  • Heh, that part where Christine goes, "This haunted face holds no horror for me now." and then Karrie's all... *Yay!* And then she goes, "It's in your soul that the true distortion lies." And he's like, *Wait... what?* Pretty amazing. Not my favorite portrayal, but really good! Thanks for posting!

  • yeah thats quite a different reaction most phantoms have from those lines.

  • wow that is al there is to say about peter karrie in this, makes me proud to be welsh, absolutely stuning performnace

  • Wow.....what a unique interpretation of the Phantom. I would love to have seen this live. I was really moved by this clip. It must have been an amazing to see him perform.

  • Peter Karrie has the most intense characterization ever. It's honestly not my favorite, but I have to give him so much props for his level of dedication.

  • I agree. Instead of just playing the Phantom as some opera diva man wearing a mask, he really exposed the mental disorders and awkwardness that Erik would have from living his tortured life. Fantastic. It may not be the most appealing for people who go there only expecting beautiful singing, but he's doing the original justice and giving the character dimension.

  • i totally agree!! its different than what i have ever seen

  • I really like this version because he changes up how the role is played. He really made him seem crazy and helpless in all his acting. At first I was kind of ify on how he portrayed it, but now I think it was absolutely fantastic.

  • He's the closest to the book.

  • Wow, I don't even know how to explain how wonderful that was. absolutely perfect.

  • love the phantom of the opera

  • wow!

    He`s AMAZING!

saw him in panto a few weeks ago, blew me away! :D

  • it really reminds me of the movie more then the musical (I've seen the musical on broadway and it was amazing) he is not as good as McGill

  • I have never had ANY Phantom scare me so much as Peter Karrie with his "You try my patience" line. Karrie was actually my first in-theater Phantom, and he read that line exactly the same way. The only difference was that, when I saw him, he screamed "MAKE YOUR CHOICE" with such anguish and hopelessness that it actually gave Christine a reason to sympathize with him. So many times it feels like that transition into the kiss is awkward because of how the Phantom chooses to say that last line.

  • Man, I can only imagine how frightening his "you try my patience" was. It's already scary here.

I wish I could have seen Peter Karrie in PotO. At first I had mixed feelings about his portrayal (mainly because of his unique voice), but now I rank him as one of my favorites. I think he is fantastic.

  • Any man who takes this role captures a small portion of the real Erik. Mr. Karrie captured his obsession and madness. Where as Mr. Crawford captured his passion, anger and hurt.

As for Mr. Butler he defiled the role.

  • Can't people enjoy this show without such appalling (And utterly unmusical as well as unfounded) disses against the movie version? *Geez*

  • Butler's singing for the role was mediocre at best, I was only stating that they were many perfect candidates for the role and the chose a man who was a baritone for a tenor role.

  • In point of fact, Erik has been played by many baritones - he goes from bass A to top Ab, making him really more of an ideal high baritone role, although you need great versatility for the lighter passages. But Butler, and I must be honest, really couldn't sing!

  • @dethe8ter Agreed.

  • To all who tink he's "over the top", Erik was an unoved pshycotic mad man, driven insane! Out of everyone I've seen, he captured a true crazed lost soul. How would you act if your life was devistatingly over? Peter shows more emotion at once, than most do in the whole show! Ever see the guy that's lost his marbbles at the bus stop? he doesn't just stand there. There is a time when there is overflowing emotions, and others that require void, and Peter nails it

  • though i agree you need to be a bit more exaggerated for the stage, i think he goes a bit over the top - does his hand movements remind anyone else of two-face from batman forever (played by tommy lee jones)?

  • He'd been doing this a lot longer than that movies been out

  • His "you try my patience" sounds so over the top and evil. Erik is not evil! Just so misunderstood. Michael Crawford, Rupert Englund and Gerard Butler do the best "you try my patience".

  • Peter's good, but he snarls a bit too much.

  • Not evil? He's a murdering mad man.
