fuck zoos. I remember a saw this beautiful bald eagle locked up in a thight space . Broke my heart . I swear , next when im in zoo , i will set some of the animals free.
Unfortunately, the video doesn't cover mishandling of animals that results in their deaths eg. inadequate diet that causes digestive clots in ruminants, or overuse of anesthesia for foot care; or inappropriate touch of female animals' genitals. I witnessed the latter at the zoo in Baltimore, and the media reported the other two incidents.
I Can remember when i was little, everyone else got bored as animal's slept but i sat and watched beautiful creature's such as tiger's, Polar bears and i did not get bored i love all animals :) My favourite is the penguin when my family left me at the seaworld penguin enclosement and i stood there for 2 hours watching the penguins :)
A ZOO IS NOTHING MORE THAN A PRISON THE DAY WE REALIZE THIS WILL BE OUR FIRST STEPS TO BEING CIVILIZED BECAUSE AT THE MOMENT AS A SPECIES WE ARE STILL EVOLVING MENTALLY HOPEFULLY IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION.....
Aren't you just full of yourself? If zoos really were cruel, then how come I haven't seen any of the animals (except for an occasional lion or alpha gorilla) get physical with people?
@NinjaGhostScorpion Because most animals in zoos are just bored...sheesh, it depends on the species and type of zoo. Some are "better" than others, for example a larger zoo with better simulated terrain like Dubbo zoo for african animals means your less likely going to see a lion jump on someone..but oh wait..how can it jump someone? Theres this invention known as bars. Unless ofcourse you mean the trainer, by which it depends how the animal is treated, etc.
A lot of people on here are saying Set them free or that animals shouldn't be kept captive. But don't forget a lot of this animals have no natural habitat to return to because of logging and urban sprawl. And those that do have a little land left to return have to worry about poachers. If you don't want zoos around than stop making them neccesary.
@Juillardl ppl still sneak on to poach "prized" animals, not many fences can keep ppl out, we know how to ground electrical fences and use bolt cutters. If they want it they will go get it. At least in the zoo they wont die of starvation or dehydration, theres a safe placce to sleep at night and no one is going to shoot you
Well you see, part of the problem is also, Poachers get little to no punishment for the slaughter of the animals. There's little threat to them from the guards, from the law or from the animals.
Now if you got enough men to patrol a sanctuary for the animals, and they were allowed to shoot poachers on sight- no not saying kill. But you know.. a shot in the knee. Like Denny Crane would do...
Wild animals don't belong in zoos. A zoo for animals is sort of like taking a person from their homes and putting them in one room for the rest of their lives. I feel the same way about circuses. I mean have you ever seen an elephant from the wild stand on top of another elephant..No. It's not natural.
just imagine the zoos of the future. i wouldn't give up on the whole zoo thing. i bet they will able to simulate a natural environment which will not stress the animals out as much. now i ask the question to everyone who thinks its cruel. if they made the zoo to the point where the animals enjoyed being there would you then be on board. when i was a kid i would stay alot longer at then 8 secs for each animal.its very sad of the effects of zoos on animals. but i can only hope its gets better
@Pandabearmadness To do that you need space, lots of space...natural vegetation, climate for the animals to comfortable aswell..I dont see this happening for this main reason: our population will always be more important than other species. Now I ask you the question: with your view of great zoo's in the future, how would this occur exactly?
Studies have shown that most zoo visitors will stop and look at an animal for less than 8 seconds. So, what exactly are they learning about the animals? Also, animals tend to disappoint people. If a tiger or gorilla is sleeping, zoo-goers get bored. All they want to see are tricks and cartoon-like behavior...These animals aren't living creatures in their eyes. They are "exotic things."
@tuffenoughtorock Yes I agree! I also tend to make a connection to that way of seeing zoo animals as entertainment, which they are meant to be with circuses since we often grow up, at least many of us do with animals doing tricks, wild or domesticated species...hence this attitude is engrained from an early age. Just frustrating we dont see more action :(

The human population lives in a giant zoo of captivity most are too blind to see it.

What humans dont realize is that we are also animals. Our souls are not worth any more than 'animal' souls.

@SkillSpeedStrength
You made the claim that zoos recover endangered species and release animals back into the wild. The burden of proof is on you.
Since elephants are endangered species, which zoo in America has released elephants back into the wild?

Which elephants and chimps have zoos released?

I think blown knee caps would stop the poachers.

If you simulate nature, it's no longer Nature. It's another recipe for disaster.
You've been to the zoo, so you are biased towards it. I ask you a question.
While you hope things would get better without even knowing that they will, what happens to the animals that are languishing in zoos RIGHT NOW?
Should we turn them into unwilling martyrs in our experiments to replicate Nature?

Zoos actually help animals from being endangered. They just got to work on making the animal's exhibits feel more like their home.
