  • So, let's say you get a job in Marvel as a penciler. You can't work from home, can you? You'd probably have to move to be able to get to work everyday at an office...?

  • @LeftoverAutopsyJuice Most artists actually do work from home. Several of my friends here in Canada fed-ex their work into DC or Marvel depending on the gig. Most work in this industry is done freelance, if you have the chops to be one of the tops they will contract you however you can still work from your home.

  • I wished Stan was around Jim more often to push him to finish his stuff in time.

Where the hell if the follow up to the Batman and Boy Wonder, Jim?!!!!

And why did you spend sooo much time on Hush, when you prove to all of us in these movies, that you can be extremely fast and STILL manage to do incredible art.

Jim Lee is a fantastic artist, no doubt. Problem is that he now always come sup late with whatever he draws, or using his staff to finish up his stuff in order to make it in time......

  • Stan" You do like to draw" no really? XD If hee didn't he just woldn't do the artist LOL XD He is funny Stan! XD

  • @Cthulhuized To be honest there are alot of artist, both now and then, that doesn't draw because they enjoy, but because of the money and the name they've made themselves back when they actually enjoyed it.

Take Joe Madueira for example and look at his Ultimates work. You can see he just did because of the money and there were no real love for what he did in it. It's a sad thing but it's true.

  • Jim Lee rocks!

  • If he tells us about the story line, we won't buy the comic book? What is that supposed to mean, that it sucks?

Not the best choice of words. O_O

  • I love how he takes 10 minutes to come up with any idea on paper and makes it look 100% perfect but takes me hours to draw graffiti and looks like shit. LOL, WTF Jim! Teach me already!

  • even whit this crappy resolution his drawings look way batter than mine

  • have u ever noticed that anyone with the last name of LEE is succesfull.... stan LEE, jim LEE, Bruce LEE, christopher LEE ?

  • @hussa15 I dunno. Pat Lee isn't known for being a good comic book artist. He's known for being a bad one, who gets people to draw his stuff for him, doesn't pay people who work for his company, buys a porsche with said money, and advertises his girlfriend in a beauty competition.

  • @hussa15 Stan Lee's real name is Stanley Martin Lieber.

  • @hussa15 it's one of the most common last names in the world.

  • STAY TUNED FOR WILD CATS

  • @HeatLegs yes, i want to see that :D

  • I dont get why ppl dont like it when Stan talks lol

I love his chatting. besides Jim got it done :D

  • A truly passionate artist is one that draws even outside of their job

  • looks like im not the only one who cant finish draws hahah

  • wat an amazing 7 part series!! thanks for the uploads!!

  • stop talking, Stan! and let us just watch him draw please..

  • Stan lee is a liar! 5 mins my ass! haha ;)

  • Its sort of weird when Jim draws his movments when hes drawing, its sort of robotic like when he does lines, and shading like at the end.

Its pretty awesome how he does that though :)

  • Ooh my freakin goodness this is like the first comic book that I bought! what a great find!

  • Jim Lee the genius

  • That was fuckin amazing..

  • ''you do like to draw'' no shit

  • Its a profound line don't blurr it.

It's about how he likes to draw every line of his drawings as a aprt of a composition and not just the composition as a whole or in his head like many artist, it's about how he loves the process of every picture not just the things he's drawing in particular.

Stan means some people need inspiration or get it from a thing, a thought, or even a smell, Jim Lee gets it from a simple line, that's the escence of Jim's work.

  • jim was prolly wishing stan to shut up

  • stay tuned for wild cats! lolz

  • nice

  • wish i could draw like that :(

  • I remember watching one of these videos a few years ago, it was back from 1991 or something I think. He was pretty famous in the comic artist world I think he may still be. He looked a lot like Matt Damon maybe you guys know who I'm talking about, I think he's 41-42 now.

  • Rob Liefeld

  • 1:25 "Your'e one of these guys that can't draw and chew gum at the same time, right?..."

I never realized how much of an asshole Stan Lee is. Haha...

Jim Lee is amazing- drawing even while being belittled by Stan.

  • stan pissed me off in these videos lol

  • i agree... he was sorta a dick and kept like interrupting jim and makin him seem stupid.

  • he is my favourite artist

  • actually wat he meant was once its spoiled you wont buy it

  • Jim Lee's definitely got the god-given talent...

  • stay tuned for wild cats

  • said ur mom

  • what? thats not even clever or funn f--- off!

  • funn? um ok its not buddy

  • he means all of the Image Fags

  • Stan is annoying in this video.

  • Stan's great man added a lot to the video

  • stan was way to pushy in this, the whole look at me when I'm talking thing, or listen to me and stop, I know he expects a lot of respect but thats to much.

  • its funny after all this time I think out of the Image boys he's the only one to have reached legendary status. Well one things for certain he's the only one still really working. I guess Marvel was right in the sense that artwork while important as it is isn't everything. (even though some would tend to disagree.) Rob Liefeld? Tod Mcfarlane? Whilce Portacio? Well at least Jim is still kicking ass and its nice to see him so young....

  • I think the reason Jim is still working is because out of all the "Image" artists, he's the only one who really understood the craft of drawing beyond just making a picture look "cool" or "trendy."

  • You know what? I agree with you 100 percent. I mean look at liefeld's books? was he always so lazy as an artist? Or is it just me... its like the guy never understood proportions or dynamics... Jim lee is always been about shadows, lighting, mood, and the over whole dynamic of the books he works on. Jim Lee is a legend.

  • I think he needs 2 black markers per day xD

  • holy shit he did that in only 3 minutes!

  • It's awesome, but at the same time it's a stock pose. Every artist has a catalog of numerous stock poses that they can turn out in minutes. If you look at his comic art, you'll see a lot of the same poses. It also helps when you draw for fans at conventions and stuff.

  • marc silvestri, cool 2 masters working at the same place, btw does anybody know how much comic artists get paid?

  • They get paid with respect.

  • Real shitty. Typically about $150-250 a page starting out. If you make it to the level of a Jim Lee, he clears a million a year easily. But he doesn't get paid per page, he gets paid per project.

  • hehe well is not that bad, i was offered to draw a comic for 2$ per page plus 50% of sales, form that to 150$ per page is a lot of difference

  • It does depend on who you draw for. If you're working for one of the big companies they'll pay you industry rates, but the competition in getting jobs is fierce.

For an indie publisher, they'll pay you what they can afford! The benefit is using that "published" work to try to get better paying work.

  • that was all great :D And I'm sorry lol but "elongate" or whatever "his fingers and other parts of his body"? lol

  • the chewing gum and drawing at the same time comment was a bit awkward... Jim didn't seemed to thrilled after that.

  • great vids J2cool

  • i wish i could draw like jim lee, the way he is so confident with where the pen goes.

  • see he doesnt use any guidelines in pencil though, he just does it straight, i know some people think lee is the emperors new clothes, but to me his works cool.

  • but you wil nvr be as good as him

  • I can't catch the name of the guy he is playing ping-pong with. Joe something? Can anybody help?

  • sounds like joe chaido

  • Ah yes. Perhaps it is Joe Chiodo. :-D

  • chido

  • Geeze, I wish i had skills like Lee. Just 1/10 would do.

  • he based that off everquest I think as he was a fan of everquest and world of warcraft

  • fan of everquest: yes, huge fan

    Fan of WoW: not sure...

  • I could watch stuff like this all day is their more stuff on youtube where you can watch atists draw.

  • Yeah Shiro ur right I draw my own comics but I also do steel life

  • lol, at the end, "stay tuned for the wild cats" rofl sorry had to comment on that. Great vid

  • hes pretty good ,but id like to see if he can draw not comics or comic style

  • i really hate it when people say that kinda stuff, " can he draw not in comic style? of course he can! just cause u choose a line of work in a particular style doesnt mean they cant draw abstact or anything. People always say " ah well, he draws comics so he can only draw in that style"

  • ditto Shiro458, even a some insight about the drawing process tells you pared-down anatomical and facial expressions in comics and the fullblown 'realistic style' are just MODES of sketching, final product depends on: personal and commercial tastes, demand, and the individual artist's personal development of their illustration style, e.g. Jim Lee.

  • You guys are jersk, Stan's making it more interesting and getting input.

  • I always thought pencillers made about $20,000 for an issue. It could be more like 10. I just know they get paid by the page. If you get 10 grand to do an issue, that's $120,000.00 per year. Very good living. Who knows. Like you guys, I switched from comics to film and am now coming back to comics, though I still dig film, too. So, we'll see... maybe, I'll end up in TV.

  • Those sound like if-you're-working-on-a-successfully-well-known-blockbuster-hit kind of numbers you got there. If it were that easy, now would definately be the time to do so, I guess. XD lmao

  • 10k per issue? are you insane?

  • More or less?

  • according to the wall street journal an average per-page rate is between $100-300. I've seen several sources who say that beginners can get less than $100. the jim lee/ michael turner/ todd mcfarlane rates are few and far between

  • I've since (spider-Man, X-Men developments) decided that movies are better.

  • Wow... Jim Lee was the reason i kept reading X-Men back in the day... he's going to be a legend...

  • arghhhh i love them both!!! :D

  • hes da best ive ever seen

  • give him more time damn

  • i wanna know too,i origanly wanted to get into comics but decided to go into animation instead because of 1:the money they make, and 2:comics is a flooded industry,i definitly have the talent but so does evry1 else in america...

  • Stan Lee is being a bitch.

  • hows he being a bitch. life isnt just about being a tough cunt or a sik cunt i mean look at him hes smart hes got a good life and hes 1 of the worlds best comic drawrer in da wrld wat isnt that good now

  • Wow, how did you find something like this? This was back in the days when Lee wasn't as famous as now. Too bad the comic industry died.

  • about the salary. if youre new in the industry youll get minimum. think about it like your steps to becoming an independent comic book artist. the illustrator is the buttom step. it's like ranks. you wont get precents from the sales. like a guy thats doing the soryboard in film industry.

  • is the salary enough to live off of?(thats the only reason why i switched my career path from comics to movies, comics is a flooded industry, everybody wants to do it...

  • y'know a lot of kids can draw this way,

it's probably a question of style and portfolio and choice of works that helps you get BIG like the Jim Lees.

Also, maybe he has a intant knack for scene-creating, which is on top of basic draughting skills (his infinite cyphers and all)

..a few friends I had could draw quickly from their heads exactly like this when they were around 12/13 no joke, but they didn't get nowhere! haha good clips.

  • Yeah no kidding the entertainment industry is extremely cut-throat, for every mcfarlane and jim lee there's 100's of thousands that have the talent but just don't make it.

  • Yeah totally man! I knew a couple of school friends at 14 who have given it up for 'real' jobs who could doodle up something as good as Byrne or Jim Lee in this sort of time I'm dead serious.

  • Actually, it takes loads of talent and dedication to draw comics. Very few teenagers could possibly keep up with the pace a dedicated illustrator has. Pages a day equals a 10-hour work day or more, and that's if the artist is in a hurry. A comic illustrator has very little time to finish his work as fine as he would like it, so he kinda has to have enough talent that if he worked at half his normal quality, it's still saleable.

  • IMO you're talking about motivation and commitment - but I'm just talking about good old fashion raw talent. I'm not saying experience and commitment doesn't provide an comic artist with the storyboard-crafting expertise to work fast under pressure, a 'professional' quality difficult to attain, but the raw on-the-spot artistic skill displayed here is not as rare as all that.

  • ps - I fully appreciate your poitn parlotrick4, but if the 10k per issue that is being touted is correct, that expertise goes an awful long way - interpret that observation whichever way you want. :)

  • I need moreeeeeeeee

  • Wow its the first time he drew Zealot, right in front of the man Stan Lee. :o

  • hey does anybody know where i can see the other episodes of this series or where i can purchase them????

  • what does jim lee draw ? Wolverine ?

  • Great demo/interview. I especially loved the awkward moments in there... Stan Lee can really talk. Guess it's for the show.

  • Stan Lee does spiderman eh?

also he talked alot... I know he understands depth perception and such... for the sake of the show...

  • thats one of his damn doodles!?! Jim, you can draw lol

  • STAY TUNED FOR WILD CATS

  • yeah! what is that about? hahaha! Just the way it was said... Like his guts were being pressed out like toothpaste :^)

  • Holy shit that show sucked :)

  • I tryed coping the girl in bikiny on the wall at his studio... But without guide lines, I'm crap... I'd like to be as fast as this dude

  • Wish I could draw like that. The dude isn't even using preliminary guides.

  • Jim Lee's awesome. This is a great clip.

  • Damn, they actually videotaped themselves? Cool!!! The only thing I knew was that there was a defection of former Marvel artists who wanted to break free, led by Rob Liefeld to form their own company and I was actually glad for it. Something OTHER than Marvel and DC boy....it sure was a coup but guess what? Most are working for Marvel and DC! LOL!

  • Well, in one of the earlier videos, Stan was talking about X-Men #1 selling 8.2 million copies last year. That comic was came out in 91, so I would guess that this video came out in 92.

  • Jim Lee should have smacked Stan Lee for his blabbing.

  • This video was made when image was just formed.

  • I loved HUSH.

  • Wait a sec. The later segment looks like this video was released while he was at image, Homage studios. He was still at Marvel when he was talking to Stan Lee.

  • Yeah it is. He was working for Marvel in the Early 90s'. This guy is a master.

  • when was this video made? was it before top cow? or imgae? seems like it
