This is perfectly normal for an MD11, or indeed any older plane with Pratt & Whitney engines. Very cool to watch from here, but probably worrying for the passengers inside!
Almost all MD11s were sold to Cargo operaters in the last years due to its high resale prices. Maybe KLM now completely paid them off and are right now make money with it.
This is nothing - I was once on the first morning flight of a TWA L-1011 which had been sitting at the gate for hours - when the engines were started shortly before boarding, the entire airplane was enveloped in dense smoke! It's completely normal. But the passengers were alarmed while I chuckled.
Its a shame the MD-11 along with the Tristar and DC-10 have now virtually gone.....I know theres issues with them performance wise BUT they look(ed) different than all the others (which lets face it, have a tendency to look very similar) airbus A318,A319 & A321 are not very original, they just seem to be different variants of the A320 from the outside! correct me if im wrong of course......I may be im not an expert on the subject.......
@LGW340 - I can actually get a camera airside, I had to take loads of pics for some company business. BAA don't really care, as long as it's all above board, which it (sort of) is!!
Hi I work on the ramp at STN for Fedex (world's largest MD11 operator) -- the smokey start is the Pratt & Whitney engines - not sure why but they always do it! Sometimes quite spectacular to watch but usually just annoying (especially when stood down-wind)!!! I'll try and get some on vid, if I can get a camera airside! Good vid =)
That's a KLM MD11 in the video, so it's GE's CF6-80 engine that's starting up smoky here. BTW, Fedex also uses GE's engines on its MD11s. Delta, Korean, JAL among others use(d) Pratt and Whitney on their MD11s.
Even though it comes short on just about every aspect of aerodynamic performance, the MD11 is still a very handsome aircraft. Too bad they're almost all gone.......
@itapirkanmaa double nonsense. MD11Fs are profitable no doubt. But MD11 Pax profitable? Pleeeease. Why don't you ask American, Delta, Korean and Singapore Airlines why they tossed their MD11s away like hot potatoes!
@blueb0g I know what you mean. There's absolutely no room for things that are beautiful but not efficient. Too bad. There goes our beautiful MD11s and L1011s and VC10s and.A340-500/600s.......
For those that do not know when you do a cold start there is always some smoke and fact really not smoke at all , oils being heated prior to acctual start ignitors warming etc.
I have seen that several times while working at FedEx Express ramp. MD 10's and 11's. I have also seen the APU exhaust shooting out about 4 feet of flame. The flames stopped but it scared me....
Hi, on transit i think your not allowed as you'll first have to walk through arrivals, to the public area.
If you decide to do so, walk to the arrivals and follow signs 'schiphol plaza'. You will be entering a big hall combined with the trainstation which is underground.
Follow signs 'Panorama Terrace' via departures 1 and 2 and youll be there in abount 10 minutes.
I didnt know that they were still in service... i would have been scared to death watching that startup if i were on board. Probably a few cats and mice stuck in the engine lol.

Whats with the push back driver? Is he in a rush to go use the toilet or something? Push backs should never exceed a brisk walking pace.

Interesting towing procedure. No vehicle behind the plane and no wing walkers.

Isn't it due to rests of fuel that remained in the engine which is burned on startup?
