  • hi

  • How long will it take to restore my vision

  • Please explain what's the purpose of doing this exercise. Thanks.

  • @MogieFox First, it shows you if you are converging and fusing properly and getting equally strong images from each eye. If you are not, it's a way to practise strengthening your convergence and fusion and possibly improve 'lazy eye' .

  • you're very creative and imaginative with these explanations

  • I have a slight virtical deviation in my eyes. So when I look at the brock string I can see two strings but also two beads and one string 'points' higher than the other. (So I see two beads but one is higher than the other) Also the strings cross before the bead im focusing on. Any tips on how I can get my eyes looking at the same point at the same time?

  • @jbonna Keep closing your eyes. Imagine how it would look if the string crossed at the bead. Be relaxed. Also, try tipping your head from side to side as you look at the bead - it may be that you're tilting your head without realising. And reach out to touch the bead, make it bounce on the string.

  • When I go on holidays i am going to get a pair of ordinary subglasses without prescription, with a very subtle shade so it is like having glasses not sunglasses, i hate things going in my eyes, that is why i like wearing them, eye protection.

  • What can you do when you go on holidays for two weeks away from a computer?

  • Relax and look at the horizon a lot! Seriously. You can do all the Bates techniques on holiday. Why not?

  • I've had glasses for about a year and a half, and use the computer a lot and study/do homework often. I'm 16 by the way. My current prescription is about -2.0 in both eyes. All I do all day is pretty much use my computer and play video games. Do you think using the Bates method will eliminate my need for glasses? I notice after palming I notice a slight improvement in eyesight, but it just goes back to normal in a matter of 3 seconds. I just want my sight from getting worse.

  • It's good that you get a slight improvement from palming. The fact that it goes back to what it was so quickly suggests that you are creating strain in your eyes every time you use them. It's important to keep your awareness of what's around and beyond the computer screen, look at the distance, feel that the world is moving. There's no reason why Bates method shouldn't help you eliminate the need for glases, imo.

  • I'm trying to include some of the concepts that improve vision into my daily routine. Its just that I feel pressured to do everything right. Is it still ok to watch TV or use my computer? Does wearing my glasses a for a few hours limit my progress? I feel more stressed overall from trying to do all of this, which I know shouldn't be the case.

  • Perfectionism is the enemy of good vision! It's better to just do what you can and not beat yourself up. Use the computer: use the screen occasionally for swinging practice, and look into the distance as often as you remember. Wear glasses when you have to. Spend some quality time every day on Bates practice without glasses. You'll get more value that way than you would if you kept the glasses off all day and had to strain to see.

  • Also, another thing. I usually stay up to 2 am, drink barely any water throughout the day (mostly drink soda), barely go outside, and take no vitamins at all! Now if I go to bed earlier, drink more water, take vitamins, get some sun, and use the relaxation techniques, think my recovery will be very certain? I have terrible habits I know. Also, Do you think getting the "Relearning to See" book, by Quackenbush, is a good book for regaining eyesight?

  • Ooh, naughty you! I guess good nutrition and exercise would improve your long term survival prospects. But the most important thing to work on is relaxation, feeling good about yourself and your life, not letting school stress you out etc. Learn to notice when you're under strain and take a step back from it.

I haven't read Quackenbush. Whatever inspires you has value, but remember, buying a book will not of itself do anything for you. Practising shifting, swinging and palming will.

  • Oops I used the wrong ID...

  • okay thanks for responding. peace

  • did you fix your eyes using the bates method?

  • No, I wouldn't say that it's about fixing your eyes. Seeing happens in the mind, and mostly the eyes just do what they're told. Tell them to strain, and they strain, even if you don't think that's what you're doing. I'm still sorting out my mind. Sometimes it allows me to see without glasses, and sometimes it gets caught up in strain.

  • no i know. i know all about the bates method. i just wanted to know if you personally wore glasses and now u dont or your eyes are better as a result of using methods described by dr. william h. bates. thanks

  • OK well sometimes I wear glasses but mostly I don't! I can use the computer without glasses mostly, which I couldn't before.

  • Nicely illustrated. I am an adult with amblyopia/strabismus (lazy eye). Since birth and until recently, it affected only the left eye. Now, however, I am having issues in the other eye. Specialists in traditional eye care methods have not been able to help. What would the Bates Method prescribe?

  • Difficult - there are optometrists who work with this, I'm sure - if your good eye is switching off, it must be either under strain or not getting enough input or both. Relieve strain with palming and swinging, and increase stimulus with swinging, sunning and palming, throwing and catching balls, throwing at targets, touching things with fingertips - all with each eye separately, no glasses, and a relaxed attitude. Find a Bates teacher if you can!

  • o right .

  • I dont get the whole bates thing does it make you get a better veiw of something or what?

  • It's about helping to improve your eyesight if for example you are short-sighted.

  • how far away must the beads be from each other?

  • Try it and see what you get. If they are too close to your nose or too far away, you may find it harder to get the cross effect. I suggest 4 cm apart, and if you find that too easy, move them further apart.

  • The Bates Method DOES work ...

I took off my glasses and used it for one month, to find afterwards I simply couldn't wear them again! On re-testing, my optometrist discovered that my "high-level astigmatism" had disappeared!!! (Apparently you can't get rid of astigmatism -- oh really??!!)

So give Bates a try. We are so lucky with the internet to have people like this wonderful lady show us such incredibly helpful techniques.

    Much love,

    Angela

    (Melbourne, Australia)

  • Thanks for that, Angela!

  • Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Ugliness is in the soul of the critic.

  • Confirming reality is not ugliness, everyone needs reality.

    Nice video by the way.

  • Oops, I wrote that remark in response to a hater and then decided to obliterate him, so the comment doesn't make sense, does it?

  • Hi Happy H! Thank you for posting these videos. I've been reading a little bit about eyesight imrovement techniques and your videos are helping me to understand some of Bates' ideas a little better. I admit I am a little sceptical about if these methods will help me, but I'm open minded enough to give them a go. Do you mind if I ask you if you have imroved your own eyesight?

  • You may ask me that, and I'll be upfront and say that my prescription has not changed materially, but that I can get clear flashes to read a computer screen or price labels in a shop. This suggests to me that you can change the shape of your eyeball, but perhaps a permanent change takes more sustained work than I have given to it.

  • Thanks for your honesty. I actually find this more encouraging than some of the sites which suggest an immediate improvement. I'm going to keep working with these methods and I'll let you know if I manage to improve my own eyesight. I think that even if I don't improve my sight, I may at least be able to decrease the rate at which it's deteriorating! Thanks again!

  • Sorry to burst the Bates bubble but you wont inprove your eyesight, nor can you change the shape of your eyeball with Bates methods. They may help to relax your eyes and relieve some strain, but so would sitting back and looking out of a window with a cup of tea or other tasty beverage.

  • My own experience does not support your opinion. After i emmigrated and lived a more joyful life i found my eyes did get better. And oppositely if i am enormously stressed they do get worse. Bates was not entirely wrong. I think the issue is more to do with how people understand what Bates was saying.

  • I think you are not in a position to say it doesn't work if you dismiss it out of hand, t666dom.

  • A beginning idea of the Bates method is the opposite of "more sustained work" being required. Bates felt that good vision would come as quick as the thought that relaxes. I wonder myself if you are trying too hard to do this Bates thing? Bates felt his method if it had a name would be called natures way after all.

  • your best video to date, a very good explanation of Physiological Diplopia (normal double vision). People who may have a latent squint which is poorly controlled should be careful covering eyes in turn as it may decompensate their binocular vision causing the squint to manifest itself, care advised.

  • Thank you! May I ask how this advice squares with the use of eye patches in children with squint? This was common practice, though maybe it is no longer. What's your view of partially covering the eyes as I demonstrate here?

  • Patching is used to treat amblyopia (lazy eye) the cause of the amblyopia must be corrected 1st, ie squint or refractive error, the patch is used to occlude the good eye so the visual cortex receives input from the lazy eye only so the visual cortex can develop. Patching is only effective until the age of about 8 after that the 'plasticity' of the visual cortex is over & no or little improvement can occur.Partial covering may cause a squint to manifest it would depend on the individual

  • Sad eye story: had a piece of tissue removed. Was given drops to keep it from returning. Was allergic to drops(developed glaucoma) was given second drops to lessen glaucoma. Eye turned deep red and irritated. Am allergic to second drops. My first allergies to anything, ever. Now am on weak dose of first drops. Hopefully glaucoma wont cause any lasting damage.

  • Aaah, that's dreadful. You never know how your body will react to a medication until you try it! Bates method is not a cure-all, but I think anything that helps you to relax will improve circulation and health. They're saying now that increased io pressure is not glaucoma, but a risk factor of it.

  • It gets worse. Got first pair of (expensive) glasses shortly before procedure. Procedure has changed my prescription, glasses are now useless. Well, at least they look good.
