I think Poccanhotas was way too serious for a kids' movie. I think they had worked more on the development of her animal friends. They didn't even talk. I mean they do not transmit that vibe, entusiasm and sympathy that characters such as Sebastian, Flounder, Scuttle, Lumiere, Mrs. Potts, Pumba, Nala, the Genie, just to name a few, do. Abu does not talk, but even he is awesome. The Lion King was the best animated movie in history!
I do like the fact that these filmmakers were very sincere about their work. And it definitely shows in many of Disney's movies, not just the Lion King, but so many other animated classics. Maybe that's why those movies never die, it's because of the sincerity of the people behind the camera.
I love the fact that they didn't think it would do that well & it went on to be so big & successful. I love The Lion King and Pocahontas was just an okay movie for me.
I love the Lion King, but I think they should be honest, the story wasn´t new, it was based on Kimba's story. It was practically the same, with a parrot for Zazu, stampedes, monkeys and hyenas. The only thing new I guess are Timon and Pumba, I don't remeber characters like them in Kimba.
@Mangara99 Puh-lease. It's not the story, that people complain about resembles Kimba, it's the characters, early development art, but not the story. His father dies; that's where the similarities in story end. The story is most obviously based off Hamlet. Of course, the characters are all ripped from Kimba in terms of art style, but that's due to... a lot of complications in early development.
@AppletailTV You wish it was that easy to just change names like that. There's a lot of reasons Disney probably changed it, and all of them seem complicated. But at least Simba is Swahili for, "lion".
@Gernam12 Dude I come up with dozens and dozens of names for my own characters, EASILY. they should have at least decided to change the general sound of the thing, it really isn't hard at all.
@AppletailTV That's because you work for yourself. This is a collective project with a hell of a lot of money behind it. Besides, Swahili pun is better since Leo is out of the question too (Japanese name of Kimba: go figure.)
pocahontas was good...but lion king is one of or the BEST disney films!!!! it's interesting how they thought lion king was going to suck, but i wish i was there to see the looks on their faces when it became a huge success!!!! XD
Well, we can see how wrong they were. They thought this movie was going to be to a total failure but it turned out to be the biggest animated film of all time. The irony! :D
@crazyJester1998 ahh he is cute! but i still wanna know... HOW IS HE EXISTING?!? He wasnt in any of the movies and yet he's considered an important character?... WTF! Where did he come from?
@crazyJester1998 ohh i see ! hm that would have been a lovely character :) but perhaps they thought he just wasnt an important part of the plot or something :(
@sofymo yeah, I think thats what it was. Scar was meant to do the gorge thing to mheetu with teenage simba saving him, but they cut mheetu out and did it with cub simba and mufasa instead. He would've made a great character though, and a great scene!
I always loved animal stories over human stories growing up. Animal stories, more often than not, are fused strongly with a quest tale -- trying to find one's purpose and that, to me, is far more important than anything human -- mostly involving princes and princesses and all that.
@Victim5and5Villain Exactly! That's why, personally, I think Brother Bear is one of the best movies made during the 00s. And that's overall, including adult films.
(cont.) They do well because they give people something new at a time when companies are still stubbornly flogging dead horses because they're 'commertial', not realising that they're only still selling well because there's nothing else that people would rather have.
You can't sell animals? Do they not know their audience at all? Lol. Kids love animals. They love cute animals and powerful animals, and lions are both. Lion King characters are among those that are ALWAYS on sale as soft toys at the Disney store, because lion cubs are cuddly. As for people not believing in it, thank goodness they didn't. It's my observation that the biggest successes are almost always the ones no one believed in - LK, Harry Potter, Muppets, Star Wars... (cont...)
This movie was released in my birth year and has ALWAYS been a favorite of mine. Without it, I definitely wouldn't be dreaming the things I am or wanting to be an animator myself one day. I'm so glad for the "B-team" completing this movie. Wonderful wonderful, wonderful~
my favorit movie as a kid, and a young adult! this movie is defidently a sucess, you even know how much fanart/fursuits are made by fans because of this movie?? *alot* lolz
They were so silly! How could they think Pocahontas (about a historical event) would entertain children more than the Lion King? (A musical extravaganza with cute talking animals)
@StrongGlad999 well think about no one knew lion king was going in another part on this behind the scene they it was bamlet, bambi with a twist hamlet, which along w/ the silly name probably felt like a repeat while pocahontas 1st animated feature movie based on the true story
@Tacom4ster well actually i heard that lion king was either before kimba or they were like....in the same field or something but hey sometimes great minds think alike and maybe they didnt even notice the other team was doing something alike either way both lions came out nicly
I remember when I saw the Lion King it totally touched me and inspired me. The story was beautiful - but I had originally thought it was semi based on Hamlet. Pocahontas was not my favorite, not because it wasn't historically accurate. I'm not really sure why. To me it just wasn't as full of heart I guess.
If people didn't cause such a damn stir over Pocahontas not being 100% accurate, acting like it's the first time *any* movie ever twisted histrorical facts to suit their needs (Almost every movie does, except war films), then maybe Pocahontas would be as big as the ones before it.
I'm not saying i didn't like that film too but I am so glad that people decided to stick with the production of the Lion King......and now it's one of the most successful disney films of all time!
i love lion king ...... but i bet you can tell (:

Not saying that Pocahontas is worse, but I preferred the Lion King, in animation and story.

Although I guess considering that they didn't even care much about the project/didn't think it was going to work was part of the problem :U
AppletailTV 6 months ago
@AppletailTV I guess so. You know, I find it funny Leo's name was changed to Kimba instead of Simba, just barely missed the pun.
Gernam12 6 months ago
@Gernam12 Leo IS pretty unoriginal.. xD
But yeah... If it was unintended, that is pretty close!
I just saw that they remade Kimba in 2009 I'll have to watch that o:
