It's amazing. I watched this show every time when it came on and I think about all these episodes. It's different to get updates now a days about these people involved, in this case, Heather. Bleass her families' hearts. It brought tears to my eyes reading it.
my dad is acually the one to find the dog and take him outside. he didnt want to be on camera because hes too damn camera shy. were proud of him tho. good ole otis.
I feel bad for you fay933ema & your friends. It's sad to see someone so young die from cancer. I think of this episode & heather and all those kids at st.jude hospital whan I hear the song angels among us by Alabama.
I am sorry to hear about your loss. I do remember this episode and I was always told that was heather a few years later and boomer when they redid what happened.
No, she died sometime in 1992, a few months after the episode originally aired. There was an update at the end of a 30-minute syndicated version of this episode.
I know that many dogs, especially sniff dogs with great sense overall, can detect lots of certain stuff that we can't ever notice at all. That dog did the right thing, trying to alert whoever was in the house to the fire. That dog was treated for smoke inhalation and released as the best hero.
I was talking to Mark Ponzel at work about the taping of this episode. He said that a lot of it was fake. During one take, when the firefighter went to kick in the door, he lifted his foot and the door swung open on its own. He also said that the fuzzy puppy wasn't the real Boomer. It was an "acting dog" the dog they show at the end in the yard with Heather and her family was the real Boomer. Also the "dog" (stuffed animal) that was carried out of the house was the wrong color and too small.
Yes it is a reenactment but if you listen to the opening he says whenever possible the actual people involved help reconstruct the events as they happened. Now is heather unfortunately lost her battle to cancer then it was an actor but I believe that really was her and boomer a few years later.
heather became bald from the chemotherapy she was receiving. She didn't get any cancer during the fire. She already had it! Stop asking stupid question and JUST PAY ATTENTION!
vandalia is a small town and we just have the one " town vet" and i was talkin to her about boomer and all and she had said the he passed....it had been a lil over a yr since heather passed that boomer died
I grew up 11 miles north of Vandalia in Ramsey IL, and my dad has known some of the firefighters in this episode, and I work at Fayette County Hospital in Vandalia IL with Mark Ponzel as an EMT-Basic(the one that did mouth to snout). My dad told me about this episode of "Rescue 911", so I looked it up and watched it at work. We laughed so hard when we saw Mark doing mouth to snout.
I am a Paramedic in Ireland and over here dog cpr or any major atempt to save an animals life is not really that common but a few weeks ago we responded to a house fire where a dog was injured and was the only casualty we decided to help the dog. It was in cardiac arrest so we performed all normal resus procidures used the defib intubated him put in a line and used drugs. after 27 mins the dog responded and survived and is alive today...it really works.
This is one of my favorite segments in the show's history. It was so touching to see just how much Boomer meant to Heather, and for him to get out alive.
That aside, it's very sad that Heather died, but it's great to see that she battled her brain cancer for 4 years.
I think Boomer might be a Golden Labrador but remember this was just a reenactment. Two dogs of different breeds quite possibly could have been used. One to play Boomer as a puppy and the other to play him as an adult.
I know. I love my dog, I consider it a pet. I am an EMT... During my EMT class, I learned CPR... I went and took a class at a Vet. for CPR on a dog. =P Dogs are our friends... no matter what kind of animal it is... to some, it's an animal. To me: they are part of the family. ;)
I remember watching this segment, and talking about it with my piano teacher the next day. Boomer obviously meant the world to Heather, so it was a joy to see Boomer survive. A dog can be anyone's best friend.
December 17, 1992, I think. I remember thinking how sad it was that she passed away so close to the holidays.
I think that the reason they no longer have the footnote that she died is because the segment doesn't deal with her illness; it deals with rescuing the dog.

of course its fake, the stories a reenacted by actors.
DanteLacey21 2 years ago
They weren't actors, they were the actual rescuers and family members of Heather.
Mark said that the video is just like the real call.

this is the saddest story on Rescue 911
if that fire NEVER happened
Boomer would never have to go throught that
but how did Heather become bald?
was it the cancer that she got during the fire?
because if it was
thats aother thing that never would have happened if that fire never happened also!

I would have thought that boomer died because he missed heather so much that he didn't eat or sleep
KillerTornado15 3 years ago
yes... heather passed.... as well as boomer...
boomer never really fully recovered from the fire and had many problems after which ultimatley caused his death.
heather was a awesome and brave litle soul.
everytime i see mark..... it reminds me of this epi of this show.

I think what caused the fire was probably bad wiring in the laundry room. That's my hunch although I could be wrong.
NDW85 4 years ago
it started at the back of the dryer but
the dryer was not running tell me a short
in the cord or a conponit in the dryer
that stays energized when it turned off such as the contactor for
the heating element up in the heater bank may have arc or overheat that that done it. it
very simple to make out a caused when you find the place that the fire eridgenaded from
tell by the objects in the area
