  • For Windows you can use IP Messenger it is the similar to the Giver & Drop copy

  • For Windows you can use IP Messenger

  • Dropbox can send locally over the network (making local transfers faster) whilst also uploading to the server

  • HAVE SEX WITH LINUX

  • No third party is going to touch my data....ever.

  • does dropcopy have versions for both mac and pc?

  • @juankrlox no :(

  • i remember msn 7 or 6 .. when you send from one user to second one ( in same lan) a file goes from one pc to the second one throe the router & don't go to the msn server ...

  • useless

  • How many federation starships can you spot in this video? :)

  • Dropbox

  • I just used a shared documents folder for windows , that was when I had xp on the machines everything in the house is linux now so I use ubuntu one

  • Subscribe for EASY and FRIENDLY tutorials for the Macintosh OS!

  • its funny how microsoft has all this extra junk but doesn't have all the important stuff

  • Great video Chris...

  • thanks

    Great video

  • Very useful! Thanks!

  • I've attempted samba a few times but find it to be quite complex. I prefer SCP, NFS, netcat, and the various fuse FS' such as SSHFS (which is particularly cool.) For windows I use pscp and psftp (the putty scp and sftp clients which are the backends to winscp...)

For some applications involving building systems in a chroot and system recovery over a network... NBD is absolutely fantastic.

Even with a mac, still use scp/sftp. They are the real de-facto solutions. Don't use this dropbox shit.

  • i would use samba folder share, but its kinda on crack ,so i think ill use ip tux mentioned bellow., or giver,

  • i found iptux for linux to be alot better than giver u can add it thru synaptic it reminds of like a MSN for a LAN

  • Does drop copy have viruses? I am running my mac computer, and using boot-camp to have a windows drive on the same one, i need to transfer files from the windows to mac. I need to know if it has any type of threat worm virus trojan (h8 those words) that can hurt my windows, it is too fragile to get a virus again, i can't keep paying for fixes.

  • I was kind of shocked that lanshark was not brought up. no mac, but does have both linux and windows version and is free GPL, there is also a deb for ubuntu / debian based distros.

  • Your ways to transfer files seem a bit weird. I'm a networking student and I use samba to transfer all my files to different operating systems and it works fine, to me it is a lot more logical choice to use samba rather than the software you discussed.

  • The truth is out there.

  • can someone tell me why big software companys are not writting for linux?, why don't they start making linux versions of their software and sellling it as they would windows? as soon as this happens im moving to linux, please tell me someone as I have spent 2 hours googling and cant find out, reply to this comment!. thanks in advanced.

  • You can move to linux anytime.

You can run most Windows programs via Wine, crossover office , cedega, etc.

If all else fails, install free virtualbox. You can then install Microsoft Windows onto it. Then while your Linux is running, you can launch Windows on it and run your favorite Windows program.

Most importantly though, linux now has alternative applications that rival, or are even better than Windows versions.

  • @1xxxxxxdreamxxxxxx1

Linux is free. Free OS, free updates, free everything. Therefore it is assumed, by the big companies, that Linux users will expect their software for Linux to be free, too. Photoshop & Artisteer's CEOs were the first to say they consider making a Linux version but they would rather make a Mac because Mac users PAY. (Do not believe the word of this random stranger, just do your own homework and you will see for yourself.)

    I stick to Linux.

    Chris, thanks for the video!!

  • Why not tftp between all?

  • why would you have to go though your NAS for samba?

we have Linux/mac/win in our home and we use samba just fine. sounds like your confusing the issue instead of simplifying it.

not putting down your video, just giving my opinion.

  • Rock! Thanks!

  • Nice one. I first heard about dropbox in LAS a few months ago, and I've been using it ever since. I use it to sync files between my laptop and my netbook, and to sync files between myself and group colleagues at uni when we have to do some work. Great tips, thx a bunch!

  • Giver is an awesome little application. Great video as always.

  • As the previous commenters have said, Samba is indeed the more pure solution IMO. But thanks for the effort you put into helping others :) Cross-platform is always good.

  • samba...

  • Giver is awesome, it comes installed on Linux Mint 6 similar to OpenSuse 11 and on Ubuntu you can install it via Add or Remove or just type in sudo apt-get install giver in the terminal.

  • chris,

great work! keep it up. i enjoy this new format.

there is samba as well as has been previously mentioned in the comments. perhaps the linux community can develop a easier way to use samba or a better, more secure alternative more attuned to novices.

the linux to linux method looks sweet. i had no idea about this so thanks for the heads up. as our family network expands in the home from 1 linux box to several, this will be a very helpful addition.

    great show, you guys rock!

  • What are you talking about using so many programs to just copy a file use SMABA.

it have a linux version,Mac Version , Ant it is actually the protocol microsoft use.

you are fooling pepole teach them the right way to transfer files between different OS

  • you guys know that thru Leo and XP you can just share your folders and transfer them easily w/o downloading anything at all..im pretty sure its just about the same on Ubuntu

  • Great review Chris, I'll definitely have to check out giver. Dropbox is awesome to, been using that for a while now. Great sstuff guys, keep up the good work.

  • Good work :)

Thank you for sharing this information

  • Also, does anyone know how you install dropcopy on Ubuntu? It's not in package manager and I can't find anything on the forums?

  • Hi Chris, great tutorial as always. What theme are you using btw in the screencast?

  • I was already using both Giver and Dropbox :)

  • hi Chris,

What do you use for video editing?

    great videos!

  • just copy the dam file onto a flashdrive and launch it across the room!!!

  • thats a great idea for an apartment, but if you have a large house, giver is a great option to use

  • great video as usual. sadly i had issues with opensuse 11.1 running on my old presario laptop so i was unable to try out this feature which i looked forward too. However, I was able to try out the new mint distro "felicia" which runs very smooth on that laptop and now i will try to get this giver program to run on that somehow from the opensuse disk. any ideas on how i could go about that?

  • ok nevermind the question. I see that it came with the mint 6 distro and is also available in the ubuntu repositories.
