My 69 Camaro does that with the ignition all of the time, sometimes I'll take a sharp curve and the key falls out. I believe this was common on GM cars from 1967-1985.
I found one for $40 from a dealer that used the engine out of it for an identical one. So $40, but no engine, the rest of the car was FLAWLESS! I found a 76 chevy station wagon w/ a 400 cu inch V8 in it for $100 and pulled the engine out of the wagon and stuffed it into the Chevette! Used the engine and trans out of the wagon, but used original Chevette rearend, held up til I got rid of it! Mine was actually a1981 pontiac T1000, pontiac's version of a chevette... COOL!!!
Dude, you scored !! Not too bad. least it runs good and it wouldn't take much to clean it up and have a fairly decent driver. Just watch the reverse, I had an 84 that had a bad habit of jumping out of reverse. I ended up having to hold the shifter in while I backed up.
Good deal! I had two 1980 Chevettes (at different times), and they are die-hard cars...they just kept going, and I wasn't too kind to them.....funny how they are being sought after now!
Don't worry about the key. 90% of all old GM's do that and fyi you do need the key to unlock the ignition. I had an '84 s-10 that worked like that, my friend's '86 Surbaban does it and I knew a guy who's '93 Pontiac did it too. But yeah great find!
50 dollars for a car? are you serious. i laugh at people that only spend 50 dollars on jeans yet you are only driving a 50 dollar? wow thats shit poor. but congrats on your shitbox. im sure its a pretty cool car if you get lost in a time machine and go back to the 1800s
@E63isback you wrote the exact same thing you said below but im gonna say the exact same thing that other guy said to you... you obviously missed the point here
@tewbs sorry but i might not understand the point of a 50 dollar car. it seem very poor. actually beyond poor. but as long as you're happy driving a 50 dollar shitbox than that;s all that matters
@metroperson I did the brakes (all four corners), cleaned the interior, and gave it a tune up (plugs, wires, cap, rotor, etc), but I could never it run quite right - was always hesitant to rev for some reason - even after taking it to a shop for a carb adjustment and checking the timing. At the end of the winter, I sold the car (for $150!)
@jakesaintsrow123 prety good like one dent in the side hardly noticable and i think some retard cut a hole in the hood to put i big air filter in it but then they covered it up and puttied the shit out of it some little holes in the floor thats about it the motor isnt doing so good any more lol but i i love the thing
My mom got one for free when I was younger..BRIGHT yellow.. I HATED being picked up in that thing from school. I ended up taking it into a demo derby one day while she was on vacation just to get rid of it.. lol
Just wanted to point out to you that there's a number of cars I've seen in person that allowed the key to slide out of the ignition WHILE the engine was running. It wasn't too uncommon in older vehicles with worn keys/igntion cylinders.
my first car was 1981 chevette. i paid 300.00 dollars for it. had it eight months and smashed it up. i sold it for 350 smashed up. could'nt kill it. i miss it some times. PS i hit a teacher of all people. LOL

$50 Bucks!!!! That is amazing man!!! You could never find something like that where I live!!! Thats probably the greatest $50 investment I've ever seen!! Good job!!!
its because the genius that installed it didnt hook up the ignition-off power. the original radio probably didnt get any power ignition off. a simple matter of running a wire from the fuse box to the radio.
Most vehicles back in the day were able to do that with the key, its because if you needed to open your trunk you can let it idle and still open it. My 85' Olds is the same.
Good for you! I just picked up a 2000 Ford Contour with 43,000 miles for $2000. This car had one owner, a friend's Dad who hardly ever drove it. Like new inside and out, everything works...........and it runs beautifully! I can't people go out and spend $20,000+ on a new car.
We had a 1982 gray Chevette. By the time I inherited it in 1985, it shook when you went over 60. I gave it back to my Dad in 1988 because the "check engine" light kept going on when I'd be driving it to college. He sold it to the janitor at his office in 1990 and a month later, it caught on fire. Fortunately, nobody was hurt but that was the end. What a car!
damn you look like your well off and you got people giving you cars I can even buy a damn truck with no motor or trans with rust holes all out through it for under 400 now I have nothing... it sucks
That's a lot of value for fifty bucks. Headliner always fell down in that vintage GM cars. Ignition key used to come out like that on 1960s cars, but probably isn't designed to do that on a car as new as the Chevette. The later Chevettes were like cockroaches---very durable little things you couldn't kill.
wooow! I Bought a Chevette the last week and cost me $650... D: under conditions similar to my Chevette. I think the yours is better because is manual and no automatic. :S
@jaretkady Yeah, it definitely moved under it's own power. Big problem is it wouldn't stop. Only had working brakes on the rear left. Makes traffic more interesting, that's for sure. :)
The great think about these crap boxes is they last forever, and you can rip the entire interior out with a screwdriver and a ratchet. We tore my neices apart and scrubed the seats down in the sun and polished it up with a new rug from a leftover store. Canadian Tire discontinued the touch up paint, so we bought twenty of them and redid the exterior for $40 bucks lol.
@tpvalley In BC we to do an emissions test before you can get plates for it. In the interior, you may notice some papers on the dash - those are temp permits which allow a car to be driven on the road without plates. The one in the rear window must've fallen down or something. The car later passed AirCare and was on the road for some time.
it took 25 bucks to replace the batter in my old watch. i purchased a new watch also for around 54 bucks. instead of spending money on that, you purchased an american made garbage can, congrats.
Chevette / Acadian fever never goes away! I bought one for $400 last Sept. Re-did the body completely- nearly a complete tear down. Lots of new parts. $1000, including paint. I hope you can keep yours for quite a while
I used to own a 1985 Chevette....I had the same ignition switch problems, and the brakes issues.
That and lotsa little stuff rattled, squeaked and fell off. The major components were good. It should run a long time with a repair here and there. Good deal! :)
i have never seen the dam speed/gas/oil/battery/etc control panel work, much less hear the open door sound, hahaha... my chevette is dead (transmition) wish i could buy yours...
Most 80s and some early 90s Jeeps used GM steering columns and ignition keys. Had an '84 Cherokee do the same thing. You could even start it without a key.
oh geez dont tell people that..haha, but yea my wrangler has a manual lock ignition, that little lever you push and turn the key all the way back to lock it, so you can take the key out but still have to start it with the key.
im getting a 1979 chevette for free, found out it only needs about 1500 dollars to get it road worthy
someone down the street from me was selling a white chevette for 800 bucks, at the end of the day i went to talk to them and someone had already bought it lol
i have an opel GT. reminds me a a lot of the chevette i had. still looking for a new cheVETTE here no luck dammit. sad indeed. gotta have another chevette no doubt about it. chevette fever never goes away. 8)
mine ran without the key also. i learned the hard way..DO NOT take out the key while moving!. the steering wheel will lock and youre screwed. almost got me over a cliff lol. well funs over.
this car was designed in germany by opel under gm division. it was called the world car. and is a true lil rally car.
thus the rear wheel drive. the body and frame are made by fisher, one of the best and strongest frame and body makers period. the chevette was also a concept car that went into production happily.
these cars were simple tanks and will outlast any new car if taken care of. thats why theres not many today. nerds didnt take care of them.. DER. mine was an 1987 2 door lowrider.
u cant beat its hatchback horn loading for the car audio in them. 300 rms sounds like 750 watts. i shi# u not. best car and stereo i ever had in it.
no other cars ive had felt as comfy as my lil vettee did. none of them.
I also had an 86 chevette! Best (and cheapest) car i ever had!!! I even went out and got some chrome rims for it, lowered it to the ground, and put four 15 inch subs in the hatch. pimpin... BIg pimpin:P
At the time, it turns out the starter was fine - the battery was just dead.
Ironically, the guy who bought the car off of me later had to replace the starter anyway because it did eventually die. $20 from a wrecker isn't bad.
Currently, the car is off the road now as my buddy would rather ride his motorcycle now (can't blame him at all). He's still talking about putting a 2.8 V6 into it, but we'll see what happens.
One day I'll put a new video up to show how it's doing.
Yeah... indestructible except for the rust issues... The starter died on this one and we used a S10 to start it. Lock the back bumpers, start driving the S10, pop out the clutch on the Chevette... and result!
my 87 scooter, i took her sideways over a 8 inch curb with all 4 tires doing 50kph (in winter) holy crap just a couple dings on the rims, no shakes, no nothing, AWSOME! it took everything i threw at it, cept i went through a butt load of tires, thank god for auto wreckers :)
Bought a 1982 chevette in 1986 for $1200 It was my first car paid for by me and I absolutely loved it! Learned to drive a manual shift with that car. Would take it back in a minute! Wish Chevy would sell them again!
I only had to patch the floor they really are a good
car it was great. I had to pay 125 dollars :), I was in school when I had it, I have very good memories of it and I sold it to my friend when my Dad bought a New
Lots of people are buying and selling those things for 50 bucks. Years ago I sold one for 50, That one is in better shape. If it breaks down, your friend will not feel bad, because it was only 50 bucks.
one bad thing about these cars, to change or clean the dash speaker you gotta take the whole dam dash and everything off.... never liked that 2 well. and it had bad window glass holder internal clips and hardware. the windows loved to detrack on ya.
You know the sad thing? It cost me at least that to get it home. By the time I got the registration transferred and the one-day permit to drive it, I think that in itself was another $50. :( Oh well.. still cheap.
wow nice vet had the sameone put on some honda 14 inc and 13 on the front and it makes them handle mint but nic vet man

Chevette / Acadian fever never goes away! I bought one for $400 last Sept. Re-did the body completely- nearly a complete tear down. Lots of new parts. $1000, including paint. I hope you can keep yours for quite a while

Lol, those are ICBC day permits.

I used to own a 1985 Chevette....I had the same ignition switch problems, and the brakes issues.
That and lotsa little stuff rattled, squeaked and fell off. The major components were good. It should run a long time with a repair here and there. Good deal! :)

the Pontiac T1000 tail lights look great, much better than the old original squares the Chevette came with

my cavalier i used to be able to pull the ignition key out while on
TheWishKeeper 2 years ago
yea i can do the key thing with my 1991 wrangler
sheeveington 2 years ago
Most 80s and some early 90s Jeeps used GM steering columns and ignition keys. Had an '84 Cherokee do the same thing. You could even start it without a key.
cg8888 2 years ago
oh geez dont tell people that..haha, but yea my wrangler has a manual lock ignition, that little lever you push and turn the key all the way back to lock it, so you can take the key out but still have to start it with the key.
im getting a 1979 chevette for free, found out it only needs about 1500 dollars to get it road worthy
sheeveington 2 years ago
Do you still have it?
Toadphillips 2 years ago
the key thing was pretty standard for 80's GM's. now drop a small block in it.

mine ran without the key also. i learned the hard way..DO NOT take out the key while moving!. the steering wheel will lock and youre screwed. almost got me over a cliff lol. well funs over.
lukeslandspeeder 2 years ago
chevette also featured the first 3rd brake light if im correct. i think i am.
lukeslandspeeder 2 years ago
also for chevette fans like me.
this car was designed in germany by opel under gm division. it was called the world car. and is a true lil rally car.
thus the rear wheel drive. the body and frame are made by fisher, one of the best and strongest frame and body makers period. the chevette was also a concept car that went into production happily.
lukeslandspeeder 2 years ago 2
these cars were simple tanks and will outlast any new car if taken care of. thats why theres not many today. nerds didnt take care of them.. DER. mine was an 1987 2 door lowrider.
u cant beat its hatchback horn loading for the car audio in them. 300 rms sounds like 750 watts. i shi# u not. best car and stereo i ever had in it.
no other cars ive had felt as comfy as my lil vettee did. none of them.
lukeslandspeeder 2 years ago
Amen to that! Love my '86 Acadian
acadianfever 2 years ago
I also had an 86 chevette! Best (and cheapest) car i ever had!!! I even went out and got some chrome rims for it, lowered it to the ground, and put four 15 inch subs in the hatch. pimpin... BIg pimpin:P

How is it today? I know a starter wold cost more than what you have paid for it, but have you changed it?
Cheers
vitorlcl 2 years ago
At the time, it turns out the starter was fine - the battery was just dead.
Ironically, the guy who bought the car off of me later had to replace the starter anyway because it did eventually die. $20 from a wrecker isn't bad.
Currently, the car is off the road now as my buddy would rather ride his motorcycle now (can't blame him at all). He's still talking about putting a 2.8 V6 into it, but we'll see what happens.
One day I'll put a new video up to show how it's doing.
cg8888 2 years ago
if this is your first chevette you'll find there basically indestructable
RTdeluxe 2 years ago 2
Yeah... indestructible except for the rust issues...

Wish Chevy would sell them again!
djmusic63 2 years ago 2
I had a 1980 Chevette 67,000 miles and
I only had to patch the floor they really are a good
car it was great. I had to pay 125 dollars :), I was in school when I had it, I have very good memories of it and I sold it to my friend when my Dad bought a New
Ford Escort for me.I want my Chevette back !!
tarvelboy 2 years ago 2
Lots of people are buying and selling those things for 50 bucks. Years ago I sold one for 50, That one is in better shape. If it breaks down, your friend will not feel bad, because it was only 50 bucks.
coffeefish 2 years ago
$50 car for the win. The Chevette was always an under-appreciated car. For that price, I'd pick up a dozen of them.
Gaussian9 2 years ago 2
Damn. I don't think you could do much better for 50 bucks!

one bad thing about these cars, to change or clean the dash speaker you gotta take the whole dam dash and everything off.... never liked that 2 well. and it had bad window glass holder internal clips and hardware. the windows loved to detrack on ya.

lol you paid $50 more for yours than i did mine...
romankow 2 years ago
You know the sad thing? It cost me at least that to get it home. By the time I got the registration transferred and the one-day permit to drive it, I think that in itself was another $50. :( Oh well.. still cheap.
cg8888 2 years ago
id pay ya 500 for it. ovo interested?. location?. miles on it?. find another one let me know.
lukeslandspeeder 2 years ago
Wish I would've known you earlier. I sold it a long time ago to a buddy of mine. This car at the time, by the way, had 206,000km on it.
