Lived like this for months whilst homeless in cornwall, U.K. I was shown 'how' by an older guy who'd done the same for years. we had to get over a 2.5metre wall and dodge the security lights but the stuff we found amazed me at first. Packaged bread, fruit, vegetables, ready meals, you name it, they throw it away.. just trust your nose! Permaculture is the future tho, food forests with occasional hunting, get youself a good dog (greyhound hybrid) and make a bow/arrows..easy.
Fuck i er da nogle svin, at i bare går rundt og stjæler fra andre folk. Sådan en folk HIPPIER! få jer dog et job og begynd og tjen nogle penge, som alle andre normale mennesker gør!
If the "system" stops throwing useable building material (for our bodies) then I'll gladly find another way. But wake up, reality is that 40% of the food that is being produced ends up in the dumpster. THAT is by far not very sustainable.
The way we live and eat is no where visible in the final calculation. We take nothing and add nothing except what has already been excluded from the giant calculation as 'waste'. Understand?
Yes I understand, you rely on other peoples wastefulness to survive, but you could contribute better by composting the food you collect in a garden and reaping the benefits.
You are wailing about others waste and have shown no solution to the root cause.
Like you said, you are not part of the equation, apart from being in demand for waste.
I ran out of space, but I did want to say that I don't mean offend anyone; I only mean to balance this perspective with my own.
If you were to ask me for positive suggestions, I would say: Be content with less physical goods. If you use less, you can work less and get by just fine. Buy your food and do not waste it. Grow it if you can, but if not buy it.
I always see it as something positive when natural ressources that should only go to waste is recycled and put into a purposeful place instead of destruction. and that is regardless of the intention behind it.
I agree with that. But I don't think our motivations are ever irrelevant, especially when we have the tendency to make our actions seem much prettier and more noble than they actually are. It's good to look at that side of things too.
Man, but I hear what you're saying. I used to work in a restaurant that would throw away so much food because they didn't want employees purposefully cooking extra so that they could eat it, and couldn't give it the homeless for fear of making someone sick ...
I'm impressed by the sheer amount of stuff you were able to pull from a garbage bin. But that isn't hunting, nor is it gathering. To be more precise, it's scavenging.
Health concerns aside, I don't think this is any better from moral standpoint, and wonder if greed and laziness are the predominate motivating factors in the majority of those who follow this lifestyle, regardless of the rationalizations provided (sticking it to the man, revolution this or that, saving the environment, etc).
That sucks, especially when you think of that 40-50% of all US produced food goes to waste and that 99% of "stuff" that you buy lands in the dump or in ovens within 6 months! This is just not working...
the society man has created is a pervertion of nature...the way life was intended was to be self sufichent and take from the land what you couldnt make your self and when you die be eaten by something elss in a never ending cercle....it is to late now to live in the world we were created to live in. i feel very empty when i think of it

Err, ever heard of Agriculture people?
Instead of riding your scooter to town to scavenge other peoples filth, why not try a bit of permaculture in your neighborhood?
If this 'System' you hate so much stops throwing things out, you will starve.
It's actually hypocritical and unsustainable, what you are currently doing.

... making someone sick and getting sued over it. It was disgusting how much food they would actually throw away.
So I hear you. I'm all for reducing waste.

..but yeah you are right, the ego has a tendency to glorify itself when something feels good. and thanks for your words :)
