iThink Prince might have co written the song and provided keyboards and such. inspiration was from 1983's Little Red Corvette and he might have been smitten by her also. does anybody blame him.
Prince settled the Stand Back contribution debate during a Dec. 2010 interview on 103.5 KTU Radio This Morning. You can still find the mp3 file. She did call him while recording and he did show up at the studio about an hour later. He said he did not play play keyboards on the record and did not write the music. He programmed the drums., which confounded Stevie and her people He implied that Stevie couldn't figure out what he was doing and made an assumption. Plus it was 83. She was high.
Yeah, the whole performance looks like it's in slow motion because she's so out of it, especially the dance sequence (which I love) with the dude who just randomly pops in for a quickie and then disappears. But you have to give it to her that being stoned out of her mind rarely subtracted even one iota from the professionalism of her LIVE performances, i.e., she actually sang in her LIVE performances, and that is something she can always fall back on. No one can take that away from her.
She did Stand Back and Nightbird on Saturday Night Live about the same time with guest host Flip Wilson. Those performances used to be here till the big bad machine NBC took them away and didn't even have the decency to put them on their website.
So true. That SNL performance of Stand Back was amazing! Stevie and her band were on fire!!. That may be the best musical performance I've ever seen on SNL!!
No, "Stand Back" wasn't written by Prince. Stevie wrote it after hearing one of his songs. Prince came to the studio and played a little on the track.
@innamorata40: Stevie wrote the lyrics for Stand Back on the day she got married. It was not a joyous day as most weddings are. Prince became part of the collaboration because she liked a particular song of his and asked him to come into the studio to collaborate on the music of Stand Back. He came, added the great synthesizer/keyboard riff, and the rest is history.
This song was not written by prince...when Stevie spoke of the creation of this song she said....she was inspired to write it while listening to Little red corvette on her car radio. "Prince came into my studio one night, made 'some' arrangements to the song...and we never met again...." in Stevie's words.
@innamorata40 No...Stevie called Prince on the day they were recording this tune at Sunset Sound in LA and he played the 16th note (De-da, De-da, De-da) on synth. That was his only contribution. Stevie wrote this after hwearing little red corvette on the radio. True story.

i think he was the lead dancer in the video .... but you're rite - so gay !! lol .. the music video for this song was pretty gay too with the dancin - cept for stevie - she was beautiful as usual.
one of my favorite performances...energy was very haunting..stevie look beautiful. from hair to her size to her red witchy outfit. you can tell she was realy feeln herself that night. she's bad!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I didn't mean to send that yet-I was going to say a greatly edited version of the Stand Back performance (only about a minute or so)was shown some time later on some "best of Solid Gold" show, or something like that.
I tape recorded both performances, and seem to remember both being from the same broadcast, but on here Stand Back is introduced as her "former top ten hit" Unfortunately I don't have the tape anymore. My memory could be bad, but I could also swear the Solid Gold broadcast was sometime before the December 1983 SNL show
There was also a greatly editted rebraidcast of sttandBack
go stevie for not lip-syncing! i can only think of 3 occasions where she lip-synced:
-1989- rooms on fire, top of the pops (stevie actually did a singback later that year on some european tv show- but her live vocal sounded flat as due to the klonopin)
-1990- fleetwood mac in japan
-1998- silver springs on some german tv show. why the hell did fm lip-sync a live song?
I think she lip-synced because Silver Springs is very tough on her vocal chords, I can only imagine she was trying to preserve her voice for upcoming tour dates...
Wow, did that bring back memories! I loved to watch Solid Gold, and what a great performance she did. I am glad she sang live. I had to chuckle, my hairstyle was similar to hers..ah, the 80's. Thanks for sharing, that was great!

Shut up about the drugs on every video. It's very unimportant. Listen to the beautiful music and watch the beautiful Stevie. That's all that matters.

Prince was indeed invited to sit in on the session of this song and contributed
the slamming keyboard track that dominates this song and helped it become
a huge hit!

Stevie is one of the ONLY performers to every sing live on Solid Gold.
Wild1995 3 years ago 2
Not necessarily...
The Bellamy Brothers sang "Let Your Love Flow" live on a 1982 show.
Joe Cocker & Jennifer Warnes sang "Up Where We Belong" live in late 1982.
Stevie Wonder sang "Part Time Lover" live in 1985.
